Adriana who never thought of being a model, applied for a modeling contest at the age of 13 just because she wanted to help a school friend who wanted to be a model. The friend wanted Adriana too to apply just to avoid her aloneness at the contest. But only Adriana Lima was selected by the organizers and she finally finished the competition at the first place. At the age of 15, she applied for Ford's 'Supermodel of Brazil' model search competition and finally won the first place. Afterwards in 1996, she contested in Ford's 'Supermodel of the World' competition and finished as the first runner-up.
In 1999, Adriana signed a contract in New York City with Elite Model Management, a chain of modeling agencies originally started in Paris but subsequently expanded worldwide. With the signing of this contract Adriana moved to the New York City.
