Amitabh Bachchan : A brief outline

Almost all the people in this world live their life in a way that they are identified by their profession. But there are few, whose passion for their ambition is such that their profession is defined by their identities. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is one of them.He now being in 72nd year of his age continues to act in the movies and prove that his passion for movies is still same as it was in 1969 when he made his debut as a narrator in the Mrinal sen`s national award wining Movie Bhuvan Shome. The man is living legend. It is astounding to listen that he won Youth Icon Award at the age of 60!He has still far appeared in more than 180 films throughout his film career. He has been widely regarded as the most influential character that Indian Cinema ever had. There is one very peculiar thing about him that strikes me most- His humility. When he was Honored with "Superstar of Millennium Award" , not a word he praised about his abilities but he continued to thank the people with whom he had been associated in his long journey of 30 years(Since the award was given in the year 1999).He specially thanked the public which was sitting far behind the stage, since they according to him, are the ones due to whom success of every star depends. The no. of awards with which he has been honored are many and too very diverse in nature. He is the true Identity of the Indian cinema.

Mr. Bachchan`s Short biography(1942-1969)

Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh (North central India) on 11th of October in the year 1942. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a Hindi Poet and his Mother, Teji Bachchan was a Sikh from Faisalabad(Now in Pakistan).Since his father was a poet he had many friends who were too a poet by profession. One of them was Sumitranandan Pant. Amitabh was at first named 'Inquilaab' due to famous Indian struggle phrase "Inquilab Zindabad". It was Sumitranandan Pant who advised his father to change his name to Amitabh(A light that will never go off).It is worth noting that his surname was 'Shrivastava' but because his father used the pen-name 'Bachchan', hence he made his debut in film Industry with the same name. Now it has become his family surname and 'Bachchan' Family is considered to be one of the most prominent families of Bollywood.

He was admitted to Allahabad`s Jnana Prabodhini for his elementary education. Later he was moved to the Sherwood College, Nainital where he preferred arts stream. He then went Delhi in order to take degree in science from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. He even took a job as a freight broker at Birds and Co. , a Calcutta based Company. It was at that time that he began to seriously consider the motto of his life. In order to pursue his dream he abandoned his job and moved to Bombay(now Mumbai) in acting. His mother had a profound influence on him regarding the acting and it was more or less her influence that inspired him to take the center stage. Even his mother was offered role but she declined it citing her domestic responsibilities.

Struggling years of Amitabh Bachchan.

It is said that Bombay, even in those days was very populous city. He had even to sleep on the benches in marine drive waiting for his turn.In an interview he expressed that he was very shy by nature. He was petrified by the idea of acting in front of million people. He met Manoj Kumar who invited him to come to Filmistan but for seven days he could not dare to step in.Eventually he got his first chance as a narrator which is already described. But Khawaja Ahemad Abbas was the first director who noticed the genius that lay still hidden in his corporeal frame. Mr. Abbas cast him in his first movie in which he acted, Saat Hindustani. He was awarded his first National Film Award for his performance in this movie. He after this was offered a role as a supporting actor in Hrishikesh Mukherjee`s Classic Anand(1970) along with Superstar Rajesh Khanna. In this film he played the role of a doctor named Bhaskar Banerjee. He was well applauded for his performance and received his award for best supporting actor. But this does not meant that finally the struggle was over. More afflictions were waiting to test this stalwart and prove his mettle. His first film in which he acted in negative role, Parwana(1971) was not termed as successful. The trend continued further with films like Reshma aur Shera(1971). He acted as a narrator to the film Bawarchi(1972). In the same year he appeared in "Bombay to Goa" which was declared to be hit. It was around this time that his fortune was to take such a giant leap that it would completely transform the Indian cinema and lead roles of Indian actors.

Stardom of Amitabh Bachchan(1973-1983)

It was Prakash Mehra who in 1973 mentored him in his first Blockbuster Zanzeer. He cast him in the lead role as Inspector Vijay Khanna. The film was opposite to the normal trend-- romanticism, in which the actor was a lover boy, in the Bollywood movies at that time. His excellent performance in this film established him as "angry young man". Fimfare considers this performance as one of the most iconic performances in the History of Bollywood. The film met with huge success at box office and was one of the highest grossing movies of 1973. This film established him as a star and he never looked back after it in the decade. This film made Bachchan earn his first Filmfare nomination for Best Actor. It was in this year that he married actress Jaya Bahaduri according to the Bengali rites. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan again were seen in Namak Haraam-- a social drama directed by Hrishkesh Mukherjee and scripted by Biresh Chatterjee. His supporting role in the movie earned him second Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor.

He in 1974 worked in Roti Kapda aur Makaan-- a film written and directed by Manoj Kumar. He was given a supporting role in the film. The film became the highest earning film of the year and it was based on theme of honesty in the face of oppression, financial and emotional Hardship. He worked in several films after that in lead roles.

It was 1975 when he approved for the two films which would contribute to the Hindi cinematic history. One was Ramesh Sippy`s Sholay and the second one Yash Chopra`s Deewar. Both the movies became highest grossing movies of the year in which Sholay broke all previous records. He acted in some comedy films like Chupke Chupke(1975).

In 1976 Yash Chopra cast him in Kabhie Kabhie. He was given the role of a romantic poet Amit Malhotra who falls in love with a young beautiful girl named Pooja. The role of Pooja was performed by the actress Rakhee Gulzar. This film was noted for the performance of Amitabh Bachchan as he ventured into romanticism which was not his domain. His performance was well received by the critics and the audiences. He performed the role of a romantic poet so well that he was again nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award.

The year 1977 saw him getting rewarded for the Best Actor by Filmfare. He was offered a lead role of Anthony Gonsalves in the movie "Amar Akbar Anthony". The famous song "My name is Anthony Gonsalves" is from the movie and there were two other actors in the lead-- Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor. The movie comes from the comedy genre and it established that Mr. Bachchan was a champion in comedy too. This movie became the highest grossing movie of the year. This movie described contributed significantly to establish Amitabh Bachchan as a versatile actor. He again continued his profession with several films.

In 1978 he made another mark by winning the second Filmfare award for Best Actor for his role of Vijay in Don. He in this movie acted as an Underworld Don as well as a rustic who came to Mumbai for livelihood, but has to aid police to demolish the underworld. He acts as Don since he has same appearance as Don.In 1979 he starred in Suhaag with Shashi Kapoor and opposite to the actress Rekha, which became highest grossing movie of that year. In the same year he acted in lead roles in several commercially success movies like Mr. Natwarlal, Kala Patthar and "The Great Gambler". He was for the first time required to sing in his voice for the movie Mr. Natwarlal. After that he continued the trend of Successful movies till 1982 until he was fatally injured while performing a stunt in the film Coolie.

Amitabh Bachchan`s political career(1984-1987)

He in 1984, ventured into the politics to which he was a complete stranger. He was a long time friend to Late Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi. He contested from the Allahabad`s seat of 8th Lok Sabha against Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh H. N. Bahuguna and won the election by one of the highest victory margins in the General Election History. His political career was short as he resigned after 3 years calling politics a 'cesspool'. A newspapers paper dragged him saying that his resignation implicated his hands in "Bofors scandal". He challenged the editors of newspaper in court and later court absolved him.

At the time when he was surrounded by financial adversities due to the collapse of his dream company, ABCL(Amitabh Bachchan Corporation limited), his old friend Amar Singh helped to rise again. As a result he started supporting Samajwadi party and thus began the involvement which in future would contribute to the controversies related to him.

Years of commercial failure(1988-1992)

Being annoyed with politics he moved to Industry once again and he made his comeback with Sahenshah which was a box office success. But the trend declined as he starred in other films. In 1991 he starred in the film Hum which earned him his 3rd Best Actor Filmfare Award. The subsequent movies in which he acted were no relieve to the poor commercial performance of the movies in which he had recently acted. There is certainly one point that is worth noting. Though his films flopped it was in these years that he got his first National Film award for Best Actor. The award was given to him because of the his live portrayal of a Mafia Don in Agneepath(1990).His father`s poem lines were used in this movie. After the release of "Khuda Gawah" , in which he had acted the character of a Pathan in opposite to Sree Devi, he went into the semi-retirement state for 5 years.Except Insaniyat (1994), there were no new releases from Amitabh Bachchan.

Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited(ABCL): Rise and Collapse

In 1996 he came again with a new venture but this was not completely unknown to him.He started his company ABCL with a vision to be 10 billion rupees company by the year 2000 and planned to market in every segment of Entertainment Industry. He forayed in every aspect of the Entertainment from the movie production to distribution from DVD`s to audio cassettes, from production and marketing of Television software to celebrity and event management. The first film from the company was Tere Mere Sapne, which was a box office failure. Though it launched the career of actor Arshad Warsi. Amitabh Bachchan acted in Mrityudata to revive his "action hero image" but it too failed to do well. ABCL was the main player which sponsored "1996 Miss World beauty pageant" Banglore. The company failed badly due to poor management and it lost millions. It is said that managers of the company were over-paid in advance. This drove the last nail in the coffin of the ABCL and company was declared as a failure by Indian Industry Board. The Gloomy days for Mr. Bachchan became gloomier when, in 1999 Bombay high court forbade him not to sell his Bungalow 'Prateeksha' until the pending cases of Canara Bank were disposed off.

The Great Gatsby

Best Movies of Amitabh Bachchan

The best movies of Amitabh Bachchan that one must watch.

When somebody asks me which is the Best movie of Amitabh Bachchan. I get confused and express my inability to reply. Amitabh Bachchan is a versatile actor. He has continued to nurture the perpetual youth inside him. Many actors came and gone but he continues to give exceptional performances to Indian Cinema. Of course! it would be a great insult for an actor like him to ask ascending or descending order of his films in terms of performance. When somebody asks him he says that not one but all his films in which he have worked are best but yet the best one has not came. Same case for the worst one.He says that considering a film best means that there is no scope for the improvement. But he is a true passionate actor who never gets satisfied and hence he continues to churn out the best performance from himself.

I have dared to make a list of ten best movies of Amitabh Bachchan but I would like to remind the ones reading here that this is mine list. You are free to disagree with me if you think that your favourite movie is not here.

1. Deewar(1976)

It is a crime, drama movie directed by Yash Chopra. I consider it to be the Best performance of Mr. Bachchan till date. The way he takes the character of Vijay who has always encountered Harshness of the people. The quote("Mera baap chor hai") written by one of them fuels his hatred and he being the elder brother of Ravi(Shashi Kapoor) takes the responsibility to educate him. He after some hostility with rogues in his company engages himself in unlawful activities. Meanwhile his younger brother gets a job in Police department.Soon the illegal activities of Vijay leads to clashes between him and his honest brother and the drama moves on. The conviction with which Mr. Bachchan delivers his performance is exceptional. Not for a second one dares to think that it`s all going in a movie. I advise you to watch this film because the "angry young man" status of Mr. Bachchan is magnificent.

Sholay Movie DVD cassette

Sholay
Sholay

The classic movie is just few clicks away.

2. Sholay(1975)

There are many things that have been taken into account while deciding the rank of this movie. The movie was directed by Ramesh Sippy. The opening scene in which he seems to be quite and the dialogue(Mujhe to saare policewalon ki shaklen ek jaisi hi dikhayi deti hai ) of Amitabh Bachchan adds to the silence that has covered him. Although there is no doubt that Sholay has become a legend that is just because of the fact that every one in the crew and the cast of Sholay gave his best. It is said that Macmohan(Sambha in the movie) traveled 33 times to banglore for a 3 minute shot. But Amitabh bachchan has his own charisma. He from being silent lover to best friend Veeru (Dharamendra) puts life into the character of Jaidev. He plays comically while thwarting his friend attempts of wooing Basanti(Hema Malini) and wears a grave expression while staring the widow whom he loves silently. In the last he dies as he runs out of ammunition.

Ajay Chandra occasionally sings as well where he finds a woman(Moushumi Chatterjee) deeply enchanted with his voice. She takes him home and then affair starts between them. Ajay Chandra hires a technician to make for him the instruments and he had already taken orders from the various institutions. But his technician(A K Hungal) was not able to produce the required no. of instruments. The matter is taken into the court. It is best to watch this films which casts Amitabh bachchan as a young entrepreuner and hurdles faced by him.A marvelous performance by him of a man who is normal hard working man of the city.

4. Zanzeer(1973)

Directed by Prakash Mehra this film will be remembered for his breakthrough which he made in Bollywood cinema. It was a revolution which completely gave a new platorm for the future Bollywood movies. It has been long time since the lead actor in Bollywood was cast as a romantic guy who uses all his skill to lure the woman he loves or it`s the actress who engages herself in order to rope the actor in her love. His magnanimous performance and the famous dialogue(Jab tak baithne no kaha jaye khade raho. ye police station hai tumhare baap ka ghar nahi.) He in the character of Inspector Vijay Khanna keeps one enchanted and thrilled to the last.Inspector Vijay desires to clean the city crime which had became threat to law and order. His friend Sherkhan(Pran) supports him where ever he is in need. You better judge yourself by watching this movie. This movie also initiated the long collaboration between Late Director Prakash Mehra and Mr. Bachchan.

A great romantic tale.

5. Kabhie Kabhie(1976)

Yash Chopra cast him in the new dimension which he was not familiar with.He cast him as a romantic actor. A poet named Amit(Amitabh Bachchan) falls in love with a young, beautiful girl Pooja(Rakhee Gulzar). But as the story makes progress Pooja is bound to marry other man named Vijay(Shashi Kapoor) due to the family intervention and their love is torn apart. Amit is married to Anjali(Waheeda Rehman). The case passes to the next generation when the destiny forces them to meet again since their(Amit`s and Pooja`s) children fall in love with each other. It can only be understood by watching that what reaction they(Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor) give when they discover pre-martial relations of their respective wives. Amitabh Bachchan dared to perform such a soft role when their was craze in his fans for his "angry young man". And the viewers applauded his romantic aspects as well. Black Movie DVD cassette

Black
Black

It reveals another dimension of Amitabh Bachchan`s talent. Never miss it.

6. Black(2005)

Sanjay leela Bhansali directed this movie. It was movie which depicted another dimension that Amitabh Bachchan discovered in himself. He surprised critics and spectators with his splendid performance. He (Debraj Sahai) is an ageing teacher who suffers from Alzheimer`s diseases and has to teach a blind-deaf student Michelle McNally(Ayesha kapoor is younger Michelle and Rani Mukherjee is older one). She aims to get to university for a degree but she is deaf as well as blind. This movie depicts the changing relationship of a teacher and student as the time moves on.It was indeed a revolutionary moment for Hindi cinema. The other films which were produced on disability were either on deafness or blindness of the actor/ actress but in this movie both disabilities were simultaneous. This movie is a art-house one and has bold scenes. But that was for the sake of art rather obscenity.

Amitabh Bachchan`s controversial video

Amitabh Bachchan in controversies

As it happens with most of the celebrities then how it is possible that this man could be spared. There are many controversies which revolved around Amitabh Bachchan. Almost each of them began after he left politics in 1987.

Controversy related to Bofors Scandal:- It was the corruption that shook the entire congress government and as a result it`s ultimate defeat in 1989. The Bofors Scandal was as a result of the purchase of arms by Indian government from Swedish Company Bofors AB. It was $ 285 million contract signed on 24th march, 1986 for supply of 410 155mm Howitzer field guns. Ottavio Quattrocchi, an Italian Business was the main culprit. It is said that Swedish company paid Rs. 640 million in kickback to Indian politicians and key defence officials.

The inquiry was ordered when the government of NDA was in power and after many twists and dramatic turnaround Rajeev Gandhi was absolved by the court, though it was his tenure in which the corruption took place.

The main accused Ottavio Quattrocchi died from a heart attack on 12th july, 2013 in Milan. The case is still in progress.

It was in 1987 when Amitabh Bachchan deserted politics and incidentally it was the year when scandal broke out. A newspaper litigated that even Mr. Bachchan was involved in the scam. Amitabh challenged it in the court and was relieved on the basis of no evidence.

Holy Quran in KBC :- Amitabh Bachchan in an episode of KBC aired on 28th september, 2011 used the phrase "racha gaya" for the Holy Quran in a question. The petition was filed by Mudassir Ullah Khan, a Jhansi resident who contended "neither written nor created by anybody, rather it came into existence/revealed by Allah (God) Himself" and hence the use of the phrase "racha gaya" was tantamount to "a serious offence" as Bachchan was a "popular figure" and "words used by him affects all communities".

Justice Manoj Mishra dismissed his petition and justified that "To say 'racha gaya' does not necessarily imply that the Quran was written by some person. "The phrase can also imply that the Holy Book was composed by Allah Himself, which is another way of saying that it is a revealed scripture."

Narendra Modi support:- A fake video was uploaded on 21st of August 2013 depicting Amitabh Bachchan campaigning for Narendra Modi. On the next day when he learnt about the video he was taken aback. His PR team pulled down the video. Amitabh Bachchan said,”I wish to state that this is an illegal act, inviting strong action, one that I am appalled by, and one that has no concurrence from me at all. I have brought this to the notice of the concerned authorities, and asked my Digital Team to find out its origin so that we can initiate action against the perpetrator. This is a blatant misuse and infringement of the Copyright Act, and needs to be condemned by all those that become a part of this platform. Infuriated and angered” Narendra Modi also came in the support of Amitabh and condemned fake video and it`s creator.
