Amy Ridings and Patrick Sciannella "Double Play" Flute and Tuba Duet Concert
Double Play--Flute and Tuba Duet
Amy Ridings and her husband, Patrick Sciannella played to a SRO crowd January 9 at Christ Church Cranbrook's second Wednesday of the month winter concert series. The the concert was eclectic with selections from Mozart, Bach, Offenbach, Scott Joplin and other Broadway show tunes. Each selection was preceded by informative comments which put the music in historical perspective. Most of the pieces were flute and tuba duets, however, Ridings also demonstrated her versatility with a baroque flute and a piccolo, and Sciannella played an amazing "Amazing Grace" solo on a "hose horn" which consisted of a 15 foot ordinary garden hose and a plastic funnel.
Amy Ridings is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and a former member of Quintessence Chamber Ensemble. Formerly principal flutist of Michigan's Macomb Symphony, she has appeared as soloist with the New American Chamber Orchestra and the Gach Aria Group. Patrick Sciannella, tubaist, holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Eastman School of Music and is a former member of the Genesee and Southwest Brass Quintets. He has performed with the Phoenix and Chautauqua Symphony Orchestras.
Celebrating their 22nd anniversary as the world's only full-time, professional flute and tuba duo, Double Play's resume includes appearances in forty-five states, the District of Columbia and Mexico.
Christ Church's next concert is Wednesday, February 13--the Steve Wood Jazz Trio.
