Angie Varona - The Most Googled Teen in the World

original photo of Angie Varona, aged 14, in a bikini - I have touched the photo up a bit to prevent embarrassment to her.

Angie Varona is the most Googled teen in the world. Pervs everywhere want to see her pictures, and thousands of people have been uploading pics of barely legal pre-teen girls in provocative poses and naming them Angie Varona.

The real Angie Varona is mortified.

Deeply embarrassed by an event that took place in 2007 when she was only 14 years old, Angie Varona became an overnight internet sensation and has struggled to lead a normal life ever since.

All she did was take a few photos of herself wearing underwear or bikinis, using her cell phone, and uploaded them to her private Photobucket site.

She had the intention of sharing the photos with her then boyfriend, which was not the most sensible thing in the world to do anyway, but she was only 14, and girls are doing that sort of thing regularly nowadays without consequence.

Not so for poor Angie Varona.

Someone hacked her Photobucket account and spread her photos around the web.

It reached Reddit dot com, specifically, it reached a subreddit section called 'Jailbait'. As someone who has visited Reddit and moved on quickly because the site is full of immature teens who seem to have found themselves a great home to bully and intimidate other users, and who seem to think they can say what they like and get away with it, I can't say I am surprised.

When so many perverts congregate in the one place, it is not surprising they can take the life of poor Angie Varona and turn it upside down.

Reddit ruined Angie Varona's life.

Angie Varona in tears on a recent ABC News.com interview

Her photos reached porn sites, barely legal sites (she was only 14, remember) and of course, everyone in her school saw the pics.

She was pointed at, humiliated, embarrassed, called names including "slut" and "porn star".

She had to tell her parents, Juan and Maria, what had happened. Can you imagine how hard that must have been for her?

She, and her family, and finally their lawyer, chased down the sites that carried her pics, but as soon as they got some taken down, more sprang up.

It very quickly spiralled out of control, and the FBI were called in after someone tracked down her home address (she lives in Florida) and threatened her life.

No-one could stop the photos appearing, and the comments being made, because the photos were not pornographic and the authorities were powerless to act.

Such was the demand for yet more photos, people started Photoshopping the photos that were in circulation, including one where her bikini was Photoshopped off.

Other girls started appearing in provocative poses under her name, and still the demand increased.

if you do an image search for Angie Varona, there are a massive 70,400 results - up 10,000 on yesterday, and no doubt higher again tomorrow.

I think this is an original and genuine pic of Angie Varona, will welcome comments if not.
I think this is an original and genuine pic of Angie Varona, will welcome comments if not.

Angie Varona barely uses the internet these days.

She has no Facebook, Twitter, Blogspot, Myspace, Photobucket or Youtube accounts. She doesn't have a dot com address.

Other people do, in her name. Other people who just jumped on the bandwagon with little regard to the damage they have done, and are doing to, the real Angie Varona.

If YOU are one of the these people, or one of the Redditers that spread this evil in the first place, then you should hang your head in shame.

The ONLY person who should have benefited from this spectacle, should have been Angie Varona herself. Instead, she has had to be home schooled for her own protection, and has had to put up with death threats and even a threat from someone who apparently wanted "to rape her".

Let this be a warning to all youngsters out there.

Do not take or upload photographs that you would not want your parents to see. Do not give out personal details online. Stop thinking that Facebook is your private online space, because it isn't, it's public.

Be safe. Don't become another Angie Varona. the world is full of perverts, and they all seem to live online.

Have your say

Did Angie bring this on herself?

What a sad story. I feel for this girl. Hopefully your hub will get the message out there for young women to be careful as to what they post anywhere on the net.

Scary story. You never know these days what can happen with your personal pictures and information. It is sad that people are allowed to set up Facebook sties in her name and basically abuse her by continuing to post these pictures.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'good idea at the time'. If anything good is to come out of the sorry mess, it maybe that this will persuade other teenagers that posting pictures of themselves half-dressed or nude on any internet site is not a bright thing to do

Thanks for the comment Girls, I totally agree with everything you say. Angie Varona herself has admitted trying to stop other kids doing the same thing, but they are doing it, and getting away with it because the world's attention is on Angie, not the others. Check what your own kids are doing online, tell them about Angie Varona and warn them what can happen.

Well I honestly never heard about her, until I read this hub. However, now that I know about her story, I have to say that I do feel sorry for her. Granted, what she did was naïve and misguided, but that still doesn't excuse the fact that her photos are spread around the net shamelessly like this; nor does it excuse the jerks that try to harass her and her family.

I remember when I wrote my "dangers of facebook" hub a while back, one person commented saying how easy it was for misinformation to be spread about one's character, as he was labeled a pedophile for coincidentally having the same name as someone else that truly was one. Needless to say, it took him a while to recover from this.

However, this goes back to what I said in my "dangers of facebook" hub which is you have to be careful what you put online, as one little harmless mistake...can lead to ruining someone's life if they're not careful.

Anyway, thanks for writing this, as I hope this hub brings more awareness about the dangers of posting revealing pictures online to young teens out there.

Great article, Izzy. You had me fascinated. She should change her name and go live in another country.

IzzyM profile image

She shouldn't have to go those extremes though, especially as she didn't do anything wrong - at least not really - underwear or bikini shots are tame. She has plans to study to be a vet or a lawyer, she should just hold her head high and make a success of her life, that would show them!

omg izzy, you won't believe what i found. I was looking for youtube news video to put with my blog that I'm working on for online safety. But guess what I found? one of the idiots responsible for one of the sites, featuring the stolen photos of this poor girl, made a response youtube video, to the abc news video that's on youtube, saying that he feels that him and his friends didn't do anything wrong. To make matters worse, they accuse her of hacking their website to have their site of stolen photos of her taken down. Can you believe that? Here's the video if you want to read it. I just reported this to youtube, so it might not be on there for long. All I can say is that guy is either the most egostistical man in the world to think this won't have ramifications, or he's the dumbest. I don't know about you, but i think it's the latter. Here's the link if you want to see what he says:

I think the guy is just dumb! He sounds like a retard. I would report it to but I don't see where to and I am not a member of youtube, so I thumbed it down. Steven, could you me a favor and find the ABC video (or a good copy of it) to link here? My internet is too slow - took me 20 minutes to download the 50 second video to watch. BTW, I linked your Facebook pages to mine (I have one FB hub), rather than here. When I wrote this hub I could not find a decent video, but there seems to be more now.

First I ever heard of this girl. The pics I see up top are completely normal. Definitely not anything to be embarrassed about. It's just a girl in a bathing suit. She looks older then 14, but I can't ever tell peoples ages. I've met 30 year olds I thought were 20. I'm just guessing the other girls who called her a slut were just jealous of her good looks at an age that's usually pretty awkward for most teens.

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 4 years ago from UK Author

Almost certainly! She is a very pretty young girl and the shots she posted were decent, as you say. Unfortunately for her they went viral and as you know there are all sorts of nasty people in this world. Hopefully she can put it all behind her and move on.

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 4 years ago from UK Author

In all fairness, it wasn't Facebook that ruined Angie Varona's reputation, but a hacker who got into her Photobucket account. Nothing is 100% safe online, so the lesson is, if you don't want the world to see, don't post anything potentially embarrassing online, at all. Will they listen? That is another story!

I feel sick after reading this hub. It is astounding that cowards or 'trolls' whatever you want to call them hide behind the internet to prey on innocent children who just made a mistake. We are human and we make mistakes! People need to stop this bullying behaviour and all this judgment. It makes me so upset when I read about how easily people jump on a bandwagon to bully others and use name-calling. What are we as humans becoming?

Hi Skeety, I totally agree with you. It is awful what happened to this young girl, and we can only keep warning kids of what could happen to them too. Reddit did not ruin her, she ruined herself. I feel bad that this happened to her, but what was she thinking taking that kind of picture in the first place, never mind posting in on the internet. She brought this all on herself. Hard lesson to learn, but I hope other teens have learned from it.

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 4 years ago from UK Author

I disagree. Reddit did ruin it all for her, albeit unwittingly. She would have been a stranger to all of them. Kids do this sort of thing all the time. She was only 14. You can't expect her to have an adult mind at that stage in her life, and the photos were meant to be private. There are some sick individuals out there (especially on Reddit) and these photos were largely innocent. She was not naked in any of them. She did not show her full body in any of them. It is quite ridiculous really that I have had to cover her cleavage, when they are is nothing wrong with it - it is perfectly natural. What is wrong is men and boys ogling them and then making comments about what they thought of her.

But yes I agree with your point that if other teens can learn from this, then some good will have come of it :)

cloverleaffarm profile image

cloverleaffarm 4 years ago from The Hamlet of Effingham

I politely disagree. The fact that she knew her account was hacked, and then continued to do it, says a lot. Also, going on a national morning show only contributed to her issues.

I agree with you, there are sick individuals in the world. Being that she has grown up in the computer age, both she, and her parents should have been well aware of the fact that what goes on the internet, stays on the internet. I don't agree with her "all teen girls make mistakes" argument. Yes, teen girls do make mistakes, but not all teen girls are posing seductively at the age of 14 for their boyfriends, and posting it on porn sites. I say she was looking for something...maybe love in all the wrong places and got more than she bargained for. Just my opinion, of course.

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 4 years ago from UK Author

Well, you know, you could be right except of course Photobucket is not a porn site. But yes I am sure she has learned that posing for such photos is a really bad idea. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the boyfriend who shared her photos initially. Don't know what age he was, but for certain he was an immature and over-testosteroned teen who would also have no idea of the damage he was inflicting.

Poor girl had to go through pretty bad stuffs . When coming to the topic of internet, there are no strict dos and don'ts... All one can do be is to be careful.

One need not have to pose provocatively to have all this befall on them, Many a times women who are fully clothed, but with attractive body and sometimes innocent kids too are portrayed in provocative way in unwanted sites.

All we can do is just be careful and keep your near and dear ones close to you. At the end its your family and friends who matters, they should trust you.

Nice hub. voted useful

Her mother is the one that said it was on a porn site on the video that is posted. I know nothing of her, other than what I have read here, and then checked out online after.

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 4 years ago from UK Author

Well that is new, because when I wrote this, she didn't.

Melissa A Smith profile image

Melissa A Smith 4 years ago from New York

The funny thing is that in your bottom video about her there is a link that urges the viewer to view a 'movie' of her singing that is hosted by her parents. They are absolutely trying to capitalize off of this by association of the 'inappropriate pictures', that of which many had taken place in public places. And after she was hacked, she did it again. In addition, I located many fan pages about her on Facebook that I'm sure she's in charge of or has approved, so I think that the part of your hub stating she's off the internet is not valid any longer. I happen to think that she's a psychopath, but that's my opinion.

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 4 years ago from UK Author

That's a bit over-the-top, describing her as a psychopath! lol Quite possibly what has happened is that she is indeed capitalizing off her accidental notoriety. She is a grown woman now, not 14 any longer. Money could well make up for what she suffered when she was younger. Can you imagine how awful it must have been for her getting called names at school; having to move schools several times. This hub stands as a warning to youngsters, regardless of what is happening to Angie Varona now. It is what happened then that is so awful.

Flightkeeper profile image

Flightkeeper 3 years ago from The East Coast

I'm hoping this was awhile ago for her and she might not look like anything like she did when she was 14 and naïve, that might help her to get some of her life back. Angie has learned a very important lesson the hard way but it's unfortunate about the name. Her name is not that unusual and if a lot of girls did upload their pics under her name, that might actually help her.

Lawrence 3 years ago

What if she was well aware of the pictures being spread? What if she was hungry for all the attention this got her? Being 14 and posting over a 100 sexually provocative pictures just for your boyfriend seems way over the top to me. There's many, many people that get a kick out of attention, no matter what the intentions behind it are. Being a teenager with all your doubts and insecurities only enhances the need of acceptance. Of course it got out of hand though, getting "rape-threats" is no joke. But believing her blindly and just backing her story up, that's a bit naïve.

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 3 years ago from UK Author

I'm not backing her story up, I am telling it as she and her family put it. No doubt there was more to the story BUT - you have got to accept that when it is possible for young teens who are maturing sexually but not emotionally, it is quite possible/probable for them to have 100s if not thousands of photos of themselves in provocative poses. Long gone are the days when you had to use real film and put it into the chemist's for developing. Just as we used to dance on our own and imagine we are top disco dancers, it is now possible to record our every move without it costing us a penny, nor the need for others to know about it. I imagine Angie Varona used Photobucket to store all her personal photos so that her parents wouldn't find them on her hard drive. It could well be that when someone hacked her account, she was secretly pleased, because teenagers want to be admired. But then it got out of control. Once her photos hit Reddit, millions saw them, and she became the hot thing on the internet, and that is too much for a child without minders and all the other people stars have. Then came the problems at school, the rape threats, the death threats, the name calling.

I am not naïve. It is important for young people reading here to realise the risks they are setting themselves up for if they follow the Angie Varona route. I have no doubt things were not as cut and dried as they were made out to be, but even so, the risk still stands.

Lawrence 3 years ago

I'm sorry this whole hub just conflicts me. I totally agree with you that there are great risks involved for kids who expose themselves. I don't believe however that a hub like this will actually cause more general awareness among teenagers. I'd like to think that the responsibility lies with the parents but then again, teenagers are so darn good at lying and hiding stuff(I should know, I was one of them).

I know you are just trying to put out a warning, but a hub like this might also breathe life into the matter while it needs time to settle down and be forgotten. Don't mean to be rude, yet the whole story inclines towards something out of a gossip magazine. That way people can keep pointing and yell: "How scandalous!" or what not, get on their high horses and join the crusade versus the Big Bad Web. Choosing sides never leads to anything, it merely provokes radicalism.

That being said, there's one more thing. How can you call people "pervs" for wanting to look at her pictures while you acknowledge she was "sexually maturing"? I find that offensive, I stumbled upon a picture of her a couple of days ago and yes, I googled her because I think she's "hot". We are still primal beings, there's no shame in giving in to that as long as it fits into the boundaries of society. I never knew she was that young until I found your hub. Now should I feel shame because I find her sexually attractive, even though she is 10 years younger than me on the pictures?

IzzyM profile image

IzzyM 3 years ago from UK Author

I used the word specifically in reference to people on Reddit, who knew what they were looking at because the subreddit was titled "Jailbait" which as we all know is shorthand for an underage, sexually developing girl. Don't take offence, we women know what men are like and that you like looking, but in your case you stumbled across her picture without knowing she was underage. Not that I suppose that would have stopped you looking, and no it doesn't make you are perv. The Reddit crowd were, IMO.

From what I gather now, Angie Varona as a young woman is cashing in on her notoriety, and let's be honest, that's probably for the best especially if she can make some money out of it. It will help make up for her lost teens.

So for that reason, this hub stays even if the message does not get out. It is possible other parents will read it, even if the teens don't. You might even be a parent of a teen one day yourself, and will perhaps remember the story of Angie Varona and use it to help keep your child safe online.

are you kidding, anyone who's googled her has seen the thousands of different images there are of her in many revealing outfits. She took those photos herself and somehow got them on line and on the internet, this is no innocent mistake, girls like her bring it on themselves, not only because she has an amazing body but because she obviously loves showing it off.

Your empathy with her misfortune is touching.

I've never heard of this person, but this topic isn't really of my demographic. Do you think it's appropriate to have a photo of her in her skivvies as the lead image? I know, as your article says, that images of her are already out there. Yet if I were her or her parent, I would be sad to find out yet another photo of me was on a website being used to generate hits. Situations like this are fueled because people keep creating articles about it and reposting the pictures, even for informational and lesson-teaching purposes.

Nevertheless, it is a good warning story for people of any age who send digital images of themselves to their boyfriends or girlfriends.

Yes I do think it appropriate to show a (slightly altered) copy of the photo that kicked this all off.

It shows the innocence of the pose. She is wearing a bikini - not her underwear. She is not naked nor anywhere near it really.

As lessons go, I think it is important for youngsters to realise that photos do not have to be revealing to be so destructive.

I'm sorry but her smirk says it all she loves the attention and the drama

Hello, Miss IzzyM. I am Tiar. I am a heterosexual man who just turned 20. I do as well think Miss Verona is a very beautiful woman, and to be honest I also Googled her name because of that. But I swear I didn't know she is only 14 yo in the photos.

Now I feel really bad. I feel for her that she is being internet-stalked and threatened with rape and death just because she wants to show her boyfriend some photos of herself. No woman deserves that kind of attention. Especially since her photos got hacked by a bro who clearly knew what he was doing as he slyly and creepily invaded Miss Verona's social media site.

I stand with you Miss IzzyM. Even though I am a bro I usually go automatically to the females' defence because I know that Female humans are creations of God and that they withhold the power to continue the human race. They should not be treated like this. This is extremely scary and outrageous at a level I don't think anybody has ever seen.

I have only had one girlfriend in my life. We broke up because I became "clingy" after I had a car incursion with my bike. I see girls in Spokane all the time. But most of them have boyfriends (or at least a bunch of boy-space-friends), so I am rarely able to talk to a woman. And usually if I am fortunate enough to be able to talk to a woman I never hear from her again.

Even as I write this, I am extremely nearby a couple girls in a library and they don't want anything to do with me. I waved to them but neither of them waved back.

I have a high-functional form of Autism, which would make it possible that's the reason why I have so much trouble with females. Most of them seem to be attracted to assholes who treat women like sex symbols, and I am not one of those bros. Since 95 percent of girls seem unwilling to give me a chance, the only way I can do interact with them is oftentimes by just looking and wishing I was that lucky bro.

Believe me, I would never intentionally be like that. I would never WILLINGLY be like that. So I can understand Miss Verona's predicament with all my heart. She is brave enough to fight this war she didn't even start (at the very least not intentionally), she is beautiful enough to attract the eyes of half the human race, and I believe she was young enough to not know what exactly would happen to Miss Verona and her family. My heart goes out to her and to any other female who currently shares her pain. Thank you for your time and thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts and feelings.
