Songs that Ask "Are You...?"

Once you start hubbing, it's amazing how/where inspiration for new hubs will strike. Recently I was in the car and the song, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" came on the radio. This song features a catchy guitar riff that inevitably makes my head bob to and fro. As the beat thrumped repeatedly, the words, "Are you? Are you? Are you?" drummed their own beat into my little hubber brain.

Are you gonna be my girl? Are you gonna write a hub? Be my girl? Write a hub? Be? Write? Eureka! My next hub would be devoted to songs that ask a question beginning with the words "Are you....?"

I hope you enjoy my selection. Feel free to add others I may have forgotten or been unaware of!

Are you.... EXPERIENCED?

Are you... GONNA GO MY WAY?

No doubt Lenny Kravitz is channeling Hendrix here to some degree, but he's so upbeat and tight there's no denying Kravitz is his own man.

And yes, Lenny. I'm goin' any way you're goin'. Any time. Any how.

Are you... THE ONE?

Are you... IN?

Aussie duo The Presets asks in a modern industro-synth, gravelly voice: "Are you the one?" Uh. Probably not. Maybe when I was a little headbanger myself in the '80s. Note this live version is not the best one. But all the ones I preferred kept coming up with the message "embedding disabled by request."

Same with this song by Incubus. The song itself is pretty. but the video (a must see) harkens back more to the swingin' '70s (dig that pilot!). What are they talking about? Are you in with the in crowd? Did you make it past the doorman? Or maybe, on the most literal level for all those swingers in the crowd ..."Are you in" means....??? Sorry, kids. This is a PG-13 rated hub so I'll leave that up to your imagination:-).

Are you... DEAD YET?

Not being familiar with this band I looked them up and found this description: Children of Bodom is a Finnish melodic death metal and power metal band from Espoo, Finland, formed in 1993.

Monty Python has the perfect retort in their "Bring Out Your Dead" skit ("I ain't dead yet!")

As to Children of Bodom, I might argue the term "melodic death metal" is an oxymoron, but maybe it's just not my cup of poison.

Are you... LONESOME TONIGHT?

Thank God for YouTube! Without it I would remained blissfully ignorant of crooning sensation Adrian Daminescu! I would have gone straight for the default Elvis Pressley version of this smarmy song.

Lucky for me (and for you, my dear hub-reading audience), YouTube proffered this infinitely superior (would that be su-smearier?) version. As if the melody and words aren't enough, Adrian takes the song and wraps it right around your heartstrings. Gotta love the blue jacket, the bottle of J&B with two wine glasses, the classy blonde in black evening gown. These extra artistic touches bring the song's true emotional power to the forefront.

All this listener can say is, "Wow! I don't think I'll ever be lonely again!!!"

Are you... GONNA BE MY GIRL?

And last, but by no means least, the Jet (another Aussie band) song that inspired this hub. This live version even features a cool bass solo at the beginning and an enthusiastic audience sing-along. I dunno. The lyrics look deceptively simple but are sooo mangled/mumbled by the audience.

Are You Gonna Be My Girl?

Go!!

So 1, 2, 3, take my hand and come with me
because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.

I say you look so fine
that I really wanna make you mine.

Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks
now you dont need that money
when you look like that, do ya honey.

Big black boots,
long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.

Well I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yea!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yea!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?

Well, so 1,2,3, take my hand and come with me
because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.

I say you look so fine
that I really wanna make you mine.

Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks
now you dont need that money
with a face like that, do ya.

Big black boots,
long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.

Well I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yea!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yea!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?

Oh yea. Oh yea. C'mon!
I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yea!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yea!
Uh, be my girl.
Be my girl.
Are you gonna be my girl?! Yea

Are You Gonna Vote In My Poll?

Which song do you like the best?

  • Are you experienced -- Jimi Hendrix
  • Are you gonna go my way -- Lenny Kravitz
  • Are you the one -- The Presets
  • Are you in -- Incubus
  • Are you dead yet -- Children of Bodom
  • Are you lonesome tonight -- Adrian Daminescu
  • Are you gonna be my girl -- Jet

What a tight and fabulous theme! Major high five, this hub rocks! I'm with you on Lenny, Adrian was so awesome! I got chills from hearing him sing. Very nice find. But I have to say that Jet has then all beat for me in this hub. And hot? Hello, I'll be your girl! Who is that lead singer? And can I be his guitar?

MM, hey you "gonna be my girl"?

What a great version I have not seen that one before.

The boys come from my home town and we are very proud of them here, they appeared (for free) at the concert for the victims of our bushfires last week, they are also heavily into humanitary causes.

I don't normally put links in my comments I hope you don't mind but it is the Jet's webpage and has the recorded version of GONNA BE MY GIRL? http://www.jettheband.com/

In an answer to the question at the top of this hub, yes, I am a fan of some of these songs. You know I love Kravitz, and not just because he is freakin sexy but he is also talented too. Everytime I hear that song from jet I just want to start dancing, gotta love it!

But that Lenny Kravitz video was always great and I thought his drummer was the coolest !

Hello musical friends, Seems we are pretty much evenly divided in our taste. Hendrix classicists vs. Jet modernists. Ag -- thanks much for the link to the web page. Perhaps this will help our Ms. Frjeda find out more about the lead singer:-).

Wow there are actually a handful of "are you" songs! You should also be called Music Mom or plain MM as it applies to both. Thanks for sharing :D

Btw, you forgot (but it's more like intentionally left out) Are You Ready from Hannah Montana. :D

Yes, I'm gonna vote in your pole.  A couple songs here I've never heard before .. but I voted for Jet anyway!

It's "pretty fly, for a bunch of white guys."

Naturally, I started to think of songs that start with "Are you" and right off the top of my head, Grand Funk's "Are You Ready?" pops up. I'll even look for a video!

I can't believe it: check out this FUNKY old 60's video of "Are You Ready." God, I love YouTube!

Suh-weet! I adore Mark, Don and Mel!!! Thanks CW. that video is a treasure. Must (honestly) admit I don't know the Hannah Montana song "Are you Ready" and wonder if it is the same as the Grand Funk one. I will have to check it out. And Sixty -you make a case for adding the Elvis version. It will be much smoother, for sure.

I find that music list hubs are a nice distraction from writing about funerals. I almost put LOL but it's not really. Just had memorial service for my father-in-law this Sunday. Life is looking brighter. Plus, it's springtime!!

thanks for visiting my dear Hub friends. See y'all later. Off to WORK (and grateful to have this project to work on!!) MM

I have to agree ... was finally completely getting past my own recent trauma then this freaky-ass head injury kills Natasha Richardson. That has honestly traumatized me all over again - my head injuries were FAR worse than hers, but I was taken to emergency immediately.

So sorry to hear about your father-in-law. My cousin's father-in-law died just a few months ago.

I just keep updating the Numerous Fragments page every morning and seeking out good (or weird or funny) news-bites to try to off-set the gloom. There's an actually story brewing in my brain - fascinating stuff, really! - but taking it's time about being ready.

I really enjoyed this hub. I couldn't remember the song "Are You Going to be my Girl" until I listened. Then I realized it is one I like also :)

Hi Marisue -- glad you got your groove on! That's what I was hoping for!! Patty -- so many songs these days seem like "background noise" to me. I know almost every song from my childhood/teenhood/young adulthood by heart. The modern ones -- not so much. But Jet rocks!! Thanks for visiting.

k@ari -- Glad I could jog your memory!

CW -- I had a similar reaction to Natasha Richardson's untimely death. Makes me (and all of us here) so glad you DID get emergency attention right away. Can't help but wonder if she had gotten medical help immediately if she'd still be alive. My heart goes out to Liam Neeson and their children and her sister, mother, etc. It's a tragedy.

I am looking forward with eager anticipation to your new hub. Something positive in the gloom. yeah!

Thanks MM. Me too! I was just checking over my medical papers from ICU, looking for the words "epidural hematoma." Whew, not there!

If she hadn't sent that first ambulance back, things might have been different - and you know her family will be dealing with just that forever. But, I've certainly learned something (even more than I've already learned!) about head injuries where the victim "seems fine."

I am calling 911, and I will put your ass in that ambulance myself, if necessary. Hate me if want to ... but you'll be hatin' me ALIVE.

... and I will NEVER ride a bike again without a helmet.

CW, Needless to say, I (and WE) are all very glad you made it through your head trauma. Who knows? Maybe that jolt loosened up your latent creativity:-)!

The most important thing, I've been told, is that you are willing to get back up on the bike and ride. That's what they always say about facing your fears/traumas.

Looking forward to spending some quality time here on HP sometime today. I feel like I've been absent and need to reconnect with my homies!!! Happy Friday. MM

My creativity has never been latent - if it gets any looser I'll start flittering about.

I haven't ridden a bike in a couple of years. I sold it because it was never being ridden. But I WAS deathly afraid of walking after the accident, because I was terrified of slipping (it was rainy/snowy/icy here at that time!) and hitting my head again. I just knew that would kill me for sure. But I did it! I walked slower and never took my eyes off the sidewalk (and I wouldn't walk with my hands in my pockets so if I slipped, they'd be free) ... but I did it. And not just once in a while, but everyday - unless it was REALLY icy.

I was very proud of that. Who'd have thought: just walking was a big deal ... to Constant WALKER.

There was (and still are) a lot of "little" triumphs like that. Things I used to take for granted.

OK, now I'm babbling ...

Are you gonna be my girl? Now it is forever stuck in my head I loved the hub and by the way you are a Victorias Secret Star on the best R&B of the 90's Part II my new hub , it is cute and you even have wings ...:)

Hi AEvans! Yes, I saw your new hub and am deleriously excited to read/listen to it. Right now Hubby is here in the room with me and we are watching a movie (Edward Norton -- what an amazing actor and soooo hunky). Anyway, I have my sound muted so as not to disturb Hubby. Will check it out soon, tho. And thanks for including me.

Saw you chatting with The Sandman over on the Forum. He seems like a nice gent. And then there's Misty's awesome "places you've had sex" hub. All the naughty ladies (and gents) seem to be congregating there tonight. Gee. I wonder why:-)!???

I wonder why too???? Lol , Sandman is nice person but for some reason, the fourm was not posting our discussion it was quite odd. My husband is watching TV to and our son is sleeping with his beloved dogs, for some reason he loves the treat of the tent in the living room and dogs inside, cute so cute!! I am looking forward to you listening to it, and you have wings too!!!:)

A very good decision to put Jimi at the top of the list. Lenny as number two is also spot on.

I pretty much stopped listening to new music a long time ago. Most of it just doesn't sound real to me somehow. I'm just a disgruntled old ex-rocker so what do I know?

Hey MM. You know I am shocking at knowing the names of songs. I think at first I don't know the song, but then I hear it and it clicks, so I had to play the tunes to find out and lo and behold there is no sound. LMAO is it just me, oh good lordy, I hope not. I could not even hear CW's songs before on his hub. Yet I can hear the clips on my stories. So until I can figure this out I sadly can't give you my favs....

blondepoet profile image

blondepoet 7 years ago from australia

Oh how embarassing my sound was on mute, ohhhh. My fav here has to be Jimmi I just love his songs. Lol It is so hard for me to sound serious and 'what not', here now after what just happened. In fact I can't elaborate any further on anything as I am laughing at myself so much I have sore ribs LMAO

Mighty Mom profile image

Mighty Mom 7 years ago from Where Left is Right, CA Author

Hello CWB. I am totally with you on the "all the great songs come from the 60s and 70s" posture. But when I really think about it, there are some (a few, anyway) more recent songs that I dig a lot. I worry that this being stuck in the past makes me an old fart. That's why I try hard to find at least 1 "current" song that I like. Hence the Jet song. And anything by White Stripes...

Blondepoet -- I just don't know what to say to you, girlfriend! You are a techno-ditz after my own heart, that's for sure! I was going to suggest checking to see if your mute button was on! Bear in mind, there are two places sound can be muted. One at the keyboard level/computer level. Sometimes the sound will be on mute on the actual YouTube clip, also. So you gotta check that.

Anyhoo, glad you were able to figure it out and listen. I won't tell if you won't tell (LOL).

MM! Once again a great hub. I might have put Lenny further down but other then that your list is pretty much to my liking. I think I head over to the music shelf and start digging some of the oldies out to listen to. That might just result in a hub too soon.

Greetings Zsuzsy
