Amy Winehouse & Other Great Female British Artists

Updated on January 8, 2013

Amy Winehouse, was a woman with a soulful, captivating voice that would draw you in and make you close your eyes and rock, dare I say sway, side-to-side.

I cried the other day, yes, I literally cried, after watching the duet with Amy and legendary Tony Bennett. How could someone with such a precious voice be taken away from us so early in her career? It made me sad to think of her as this woman fighting internal demons and struggling so hard to be sober. (Yes, I said it, I cried.) That never happened to me before, so I questioned myself if it was me sinking into another episode of major depression or did I really, truly feel sad about her death. It was the latter.

So, this inspired me to write about her. Not that there aren't already millions of stories out there about her already (Google showed results for about 189,000,000 when I researched her on 9/21/2011) but that as a former singer myself (weddings and funerals) I needed to reach out to people and show just how talented this very loving and complex woman was.

She debuted in 2003 with her album "Frank" and gave the British music industry a kick in the you-know-what. Over the last few years, there have been some highly talented women coming from the UK and their music is all over the waves stateside.

Okay, first things first. You HAVE to watch this video. Appreciate how she sings and how it just comes right out of her spirit. It's amazing to watch; it comes so naturally to her like breathing or sleeping.

Now that you've watched the video and wiped away your tears. Wasn't that beautiful?

I don't want to get sucked up into all the stories about how she died and what she should have done. What does it matter? A human being is gone. A family will never be the same. A public is left wanting more, never to have their appetite curbed. It is tragic...for everyone.

So, I just want to say, Happy Birthday to Amy (September 14th). I wish she was here in person to celebrate. Please support the Amy Winehouse Foundation by purchasing her duet song with Tony Bennett. All proceeds go directly to The Amy Winehouse Foundation which was set up by her father to help young people in the UK or US who are in need due to illness or disability or addiction. It provides help and support for our young people, what more do you need to know?

Other Female Music Greats from the UK

Some other great female music artists from the UK are Adele, Corrine Bailey Rae, Estelle and many others. They are all over the airwaves and changing the way we feel about British music artists. Adele has really blossomed and has fast-tracked to international stardom. Now, I actually search Google for UK artists because the quality that's coming from abroad is intensely satisfying and I can't wait to see who's next! Here are some of their videos.

Estelle - "American Boy"

Corrine Bailey Rae - "Put Your Records On"

Adele - "Hometown Glory"
