Barnacles! Spongebob is Ten!

Ten years of Spongebob

Wow.. I didn't think the yellow critter with the annoying laugh had been around so long. July 17th will be his birthday. (nine days after my son's birthday).Spongebob is the creation of Nickelodeon studios. It has been called the highest rated low budget cartoon ever. Nickleodeon studios have also been responsible for oldies but goodies such as Real Monsters AUUUGGH and Rugrats. Not to long ago I was the fan of the Angry Beavers. Ren and Stimpy was a cartoon that apeealed to the older generation. Ten years of Spongebob. Will there be ten more?  It's popularity is undeniable as it is aired in 25 different languages.

Spongebob premiered in 1999 and is going strong. 117 episodes and three movies later it is one of the most successful cartoon ever. It is created by marine biologist turned animator Stephen Hillenburg, A record 45 million people over the age of 18 watch it. It is in it's sixth season. Each season consists of 20 episodes that are around 11 minutes long. To commemorate his birthday Nickelodeon will be airing 100 episode marathon from July 17th through the 19th of 2009.  It will be ending the season with a special episode.. To Squarepants or not to Squarepants.

Now unless you have been living under a rock, like Patrick Star, you know the cast of characters. Spongebob, yellow and absorbent is he, lives in Bikini Bottom. His neighbors are Patrick Star, a doofus, and Squidward tentacles. a grouchy octopus. Squidward and Spongebob both work at the Krusty Krab serving up delicious krabbie patties. They are employed by the miserly Mr Krabs and are under the Watchful "eye" of Plankton, who is constantly trying to steal the Krabby Formula. Not to mention Sandy Squirrel who came to the ocean bottom from Texas to conduct her research. I never really know what she is to be researching but I do know she is employed by monkeys. Spongebob spends his days bringing cheer to others by jellyfishing and bubble blowing.

My son is three and gets all this. When I was three I was entertained when the Roadrunner outwitted the Coyote !

I bet Spongebob is one of the highest selling merchasie out there. You can sit in your living room in your spongebob underware eating spongebob peanut butter crackers and watching spongebob on your spongebob TV. My son is the one who introduced me to all of the spongebob marketing. i believe he is his biggest fan. Being three he believes spongebob is there just for him. One day we were walking by the neighbors house and he sway Spongebob on their TV. hey mom why is Spongebob on their TV? Ha. i love the little smile he gets when he watches Spongebob tell a joke. it is like he is talking right to him and only him.

Fox News reports this little sea sponge has sold 500 million dollars worth of merchandise by 2002.  Imagine what it is now.

In celebration of this event Spongebob has a new game developed for nearly all gaming systems, truth or Square..

THQ the developer has this to say about the game.

"In SpongeBob's Truth or Square, players must journey through memorable SpongeBob locations to find the missing Krabby Patty formula in time for the Krusty Krab's Eleventy Seventh Anniversary. From the Jellyfish Fields to downtown Bikini Bottom, players will run, jump, spin and hammer their way through 10 challenging levels. Each level will take players back to one of SpongeBob's happy moments from the show, such as when he becomes a fry cook, gets into the Salty Spittoon or meets Sandy for the first time. Equipped with special morphing abilities, players can transform SpongeBob into bizarre objects, such as the Spatula Slam, Propeller Spin and Sledgehammer Smash, to help him conquer treacherous obstacles and legions of Plankton's robots. Players will also be able to soak up water, hose down enemies, and jump into a bubble gum fling as they navigate their way through an obstacle course of traps. In two-player co-op mode, friends will be able to join in on the action and control Plankton to help SpongeBob solve puzzles, unlock new pathways and defeat super-powered creatures. "

Spongebob.. Home Sweet Home

The thing with Spongebob is you never can predict where the show is going. Anything can happen.Spongebob has had appeal across the generations and that is the key to it's success. I predict we are going to be seeing another ten years! Enjoy the videos :)

Tamcor and Laughing Mom I can totally relate..My son will be four very soon and we WILL be having a Spongebob party! He often says Tarter Sauce! when he doesn't get his way...

Girly Girl09, Maymong and Capt and the Kid.. Believe it or not if you watch long enough you will find something that is funny in Spongebob. The sad thing is.. I know more about Spongebob than Current Events!

10 years? Nice article about this interesting character who is much deeper than what we see on the surface. His appeal?? Its all quite understandable, ya know--he is of the sea.

Spongebob has the same birthday as me--yay!!!

Our four year old grandson just loves him, so we have an excuse to watch Spongebob and Patrick whenever he comes over...although my 19 and 24 year old sons and their father have occasionally been caught, sitting around the TV, cracking up at Spongebob, too--even when our grandson isn't here, lol!

Last year, our daughter had a Spongebob themed birthday party for William(our grandson)--the kids loved the pinata! :)

I personally love Mrs. Puff, the driver's ed teacher...she makes me laugh every time, haha!

Great hub--thanks a lot!

My son just turned 4, and is also a Spongebob expert. Sometimes I hear things come out of his mouth that I drop my jaw to. When I ask, he reveals he heard it on Spongebob WETpants, as the boy likes to call him. "I dated her in High School" and "You're one hot mama!" are two that immediately come to mind. He plays the SB game on Wii and sleeps in his Thomas the Train bed that is made with SB sheets and comforter. He listens to one of the CDs CONSTANTLY, and it's beginning to drive me nuts.

10 years old?? I had no idea! I'll have to share that with him. I'm sure he'll want to have a party.

Wow....ten years!!! Crazy. :D I never understood the phenomena of Spongebob, but knew a lot of people growing up that did seem to 'get it'.

Either way, tens years of anything, especially a cartoon is a really great acheivement for the creators! I'm very impressed at the marketing and massive amounts of money earned from this cartoon. Really impressive.
