Great Classical Songs of Bollywood in Raag Bhupali

Bhupali has a certain ethereal quality about it. Great artistes can use this inherent character of Raag Bhupali to create various moods and melodies, from haunting songs of love, longing and passion that can tear through your heart to spiritual songs that belong to a different, divine universe. Either way, this raag can help you escape from the mortal universe, and take you to a world of its own !

Classical songs of Bollywood may not be strictly classical in the eyes of the purists, but then in a world where everything is relative, they are sufficiently inspired and filled with classical music to constitute a genre of their own, within the broad universe of Bollywood music, most of it, if not all, is a fusion of multiple streams of music.

Here are eight masterpieces in Raag Bhupali where the composers and singers have been able to do full justice to the intricacies of this musical tune, which belong beyond this world....almost !

Have a nice trip to ...another world .....

movie: RUDAALI (1993)

Dimple kapadia in Rudaali - A great song in Raag Bhupali by Bhupen Hazarika
Dimple kapadia in Rudaali - A great song in Raag Bhupali by Bhupen Hazarika

Dil hoom hoom kare .....

This song is one of the greatest classical songs of Bollywood, and one of the reasons for its greatness is the way it brings out the inherent qaulities of Raag Bhupali and adopts them to produce a haunting depth that is out of this world. The music of this number gives expression to the burning sensation and frustration within that a young women feels on being used and thrown without any remorse by a person that professed love and commitment. It is a number that established the stamp of Bhupen Hazarika, who has composed the music of this number and also sung it, on the canvas of Bollywood Classical Music. The lyrics of this number were written by Gulzar.

movie: MEERA (1947)

M S Subbulakshmi in Meera, her only movie in Bollywood, where she acted as well as sang her bhajans, giving Bollywood a taste of great Kanatik classical music

Girdhar Gopala....

It happens only rarely that one talks about a great classical number, and the emphasis is neither on the raag, nor on the composer of its music. This number is one where it will keep happening for all times to come, as people will remember it only for the fact that it was sung by the great M S Subbulakshmi, in her only movie in Bollywood, a remake of Tamil version, depicting the life of Meerabai, the revered poet devotee of sixteenth century. Her presence as an actor-singer is mesmerizing on screen, and the songs itself is among the greatest Bollywood classical numbers in Karnatic tradition of Indian classical music. The music of this number was composed by Dilip Kumar Roy. ...an eternal spiritual treat ...

movie: SUR SANGAM (1985)

Jaoon tore charan kamal par vaari - Perhaps the greatest classical song of Bollywood in Raag Bhupali
Jaoon tore charan kamal par vaari - Perhaps the greatest classical song of Bollywood in Raag Bhupali

Jaaoon tore charan kamal par vaari ....

This songs is unique in many ways. On screen, it is the dance in the middle of nature that makes it spectacular, but more important is the melody that the two brothers, Rajan Mishra and Sajan Mishra generate, almost overshadowing Lata Mangeshkar, who otherwise stands taller than anyone else in the world of Bollywood music. It allows the family song with the magic of music where a mother dances to the song of her son. This number is probably the best candidate for being declared the greatest classical song of Bollywood in Raag Bhupali, and as with everything classical, the more you hear it, the more it becomes a part of your own self. The music of this number was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and its lyrics were written by Vasant Dev.

movie: BHABHI KI CHUDIYAN (1961)

Meena Kumari in Jyoti kalash chhalake...: A great classical number in Raag Bhupali by Lata Mangeshkar
Meena Kumari in Jyoti kalash chhalake...: A great classical number in Raag Bhupali by Lata Mangeshkar

Jyoti kalash chhalake ...

A great number, another great rendition of classical raagas in a style that fits the bill exceptionally even in Bollywood. This song has a serenity that is almost perfect for depicting the relation of a young boy with his elder sister-in-law who has come to fill the void created by his mother's death. Its tranquility transcends the screen and stays with you, even afterwards....The rendition of this number by Lata Mangeshkar is an ode to her greatness ... not that one would ever be required. The music of this great song in Raag Bhupali was composed by Sudhir Phadke. The lyrics were written by Narendra Sharma.

movie: SARGAM (1950)

Actress Rehana in Sargam - A nice number that pulls a hard one on artificial vocal distortions becoming a part of classical music
Actress Rehana in Sargam - A nice number that pulls a hard one on artificial vocal distortions becoming a part of classical music

Tinak Tin Tani...

Ironically, this great piece of classical singing also makes a mockery of classical singers, particularly the way vocalists tend to overindulge in expression of their vocal skills at the cost of melody and music. In its own way, it reignites that unending and eternally inconclusive debate between music as an expertise and music as an entertainment ... both are great and both must survive ! The all female duet, by Lata Mangeshkar and Saraswati Rane compliment and compete to make it a great jugalbandi, one of the best in raag Bhupali that you would come across in Bollywood. The music of this number was composed by C Ramchandra and the lyrics were written by P L Santoshi.

movie: BHAIRAVI (1996)

A melodious bhajan in Raag Bhupali by Kavita Krishnamurthi and Roop Singh Rathod
A melodious bhajan in Raag Bhupali by Kavita Krishnamurthi and Roop Singh Rathod

Om namah shivay....

A great rendition of one of the most popular bhajans in Raag Bhupali, by Kavita Krishnamurthi and Roop Kumar Rathod, who excellently bring out the inherent depth and ethereal character of this raag. The music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal is fully tailored to the raag and the singers, and compliments them, taking this spiritual number to a plane of higher awareness. An all time great bhajan in devotion and praise of Lord Shiva, the most unworldly ascetic of this universe, its musical composition and its near perfect rendition brings out the devotional qualities of this raaga in full measure !

movie: VISHNU PURAN (1973)

Achyutam Keshavam Ram Narayanam - A medley of Sanskrit songs
Achyutam Keshavam Ram Narayanam - A medley of Sanskrit songs

Achyutam Keshavam Ram Narayam ...

This devotional song cum medley, from the movie ViSHNU PURAN, sung by Mannade may not be best version of this great devotional Sanskrit poetry, yet is good enough to find a place in this list, for the sheer purity of its heavenly chanting impact. Mannade is perhaps the greatest singer of Bollywood when it comes to classical renditions, but in this song, it is the poetry and the raag that dominate the singer, ironically, to the credit of the singer, who is able to merge himself in their flow ! The music of this number was composed by S N Tripathi.

movie: PAKEEZAH (1971)

Meena Kumari in Pakeezah : This number is one of the large number od thumris recorded for this movie

Bandhan Badho.....

This background number is one of the many such masterpieces, which were recorded during the very long period that this movie remained in the stage of production. While many other gems that were recorded are now obsolete, this classical number, a thumri, sung by Shobha Gurtu in RAAG BHUPALI, survives, thanks to our good luck, by finding a place in the final version of the movie. Its serene rendition is a treasure in terms of the effect that it creates and the lessons that it provides to anyone who might be intrerested in this genre. Its music was composed by Naushad. A great masterpiece...

You put an enormous amount of work in this piece and it's beautiful. The vocalists voice sounds so much like the instrument. Wish i understood the language. Voted up...
