Best Horror Movies and Monster Films of 2012: Featuring New Trailers for "Dark Shadows" and "Piranha 3dd"

Introduction

Who said horror and monster movies were dead in Hollywood? Not me. Hell, from doing quite a bit of research, it seems like we have a lot of horror and monster films on the horizon. Too many in fact. However, let's get started here shall we. As some of my readers know, I've taken the liberty to categorize my film previews this year in perspective categories, in hopes of helping my readers find the movies that best suits them. Unfortunately, this also means you might start to see some of these movies become placed in other preview hubs (i.e. Godzilla and Prometheus in "Science Fiction film previews of 2012" in addition to this one). This is done because some of these films do fall into other categories besides horror and monster, and I can't assume everyone that reads my previews on something like "Dramas and Independent films of 2012" will necessarily read my preview hub on "Comedies of 2012." Therefore, I have to go by the logic that all these hubs are being viewed by various people that didn't read the previous preview hubs...if that makes sense.

Like my normal preview hubs, you'll find each film with it's perspective plot synopsis and cast listings; while providing a trailer for them as well. Unfortunately, some of these films have yet to release a trailer, but I'll be updating this hub until December 31, 2011, so be sure to check here frequently.

Remember that release dates are subject to change, so be sure to check your local listings for details.

Update #1: In a bizarre twist of fate, "Piranha 3DD" has been delayed until 2012. Originally set to come out later this year, but Dimension films has suddenly decided to pull the plug on that plan, and pushed the movie until next year instead. No official word has come out to explain why it's delayed until next year, but I'll be sure to keep you posted in case anything changes.

Update #2: Unfortunately, Legendary Studios has pushed back production on the Godzilla reboot until 2014 according to imdb. Although there's no official explanation released by Warner Bros. or Legendary to explain this, but it's rumored that it has a lot to do with keeping within Legendary and WB's plans to only release so many block busters per year in order to keep from flooding the market with them all at once. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but I'll be sure to keep you posted if anything changes.

Update #3: In light of the recent success of "Paranormal Activity 3", Paramount executives have gone on record to say that there will be another sequel to this franchise after all. And with keeping with it's tradition of releasing a "Paranormal Activity" movie once every year since 2009, it looks like 2012 is certainly no exception to this rule.

Update #4: "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" and "World War Z" has been delayed until 2013, due production delays.

Update #5: "Halloween 3d" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" were delayed indefinitely.

I'm really looking forward to Godzilla now that I know Gareth Edwards is directing. I was really impressed with what he did with 'Monsters' and I'm liking the noises coming from the producers. The rest I can take or leave, unless I see a particularly good review.

I pretty much feel the exact same way about most of these movies listed. However, i definitely want to see how the new "godzilla" movie turns out. Of course, the other movies that I'm looking forward to are "Woman in black", "Frankenweenie", "hotel transylvania", and "Dark Shadows." All the other horror and monster movies listed here, I could care less if I see it or not. Although, some of these horror movies sound a bit ridiculous if you ask me like "Crack Whore", "Bunnyman 2", "The Cheerleaders Must Die", and "Girl Scout Cookies." lol. Oh well. to each their own. Anyway, thanks for stopping by. :)

when i saw the trailer and poster of Crack Whore i thought that Megan Fox was the main actress because of the similar looks....to bad she isn't. or is that going to far?

lol. Now that you mention it, you're right. That girl in the movie does pay a striking resemblance to her. I can't believe I didn't realize that until you just said it. lol. Maybe she's acting in that movie using an alias name, as she's too ashamed to admit that she went from starring in a blockbuster franchise like "Transformers" to what looks like a soft core pornographic horror comedy that is "Crack Whore." lol. (joke)

These movies seem to range from horror to horrible. Hotel translyvania and Hansel n gredal seemed to be targeted for kids. Underworld series is good but I see no reason for it to be in 3-D.

the "Found Footage gimmick is getting old. I am a bit confused about Promethus. Didn't Ridley Scott almost ruin the Alien franchise with his Alien on a prison planet clap-trap? Lets not give him another shot please.

I am looking forward to Dark Shadows and Resident Evil.

I can not wait for World War Z, Prometheus, and the new Amityville Horror movie. The others i might just wait for on blu-ray. Good stuff, looks like 2012 has a promising line up on films. great work. voted up and interesting.

lol.

@Jennuhlee

Thanks Jennuhlee. I'm glad you liked the hub, and I hope you enjoy the movies whenever you get a chance to see them. :)

@ruffyrider

Well, I don't know if I'd say that "Hansel and Gretal" are geared towards kids, as I heard it's supposed to be more of an action horror film along the lines of "Resident Evil." I just got the cute kiddy pic because no official poster for it is available for the movie yet. However, I do agree with you that "Hotel Transylvania" does sound more like a family film just by reading the premise of it.

As for Underworld, I don't disagree either. I just think the only reason they're doing it is because they want to try to cash in on the 3d craze in hollywood right now. kind of sad really.

And you're right, the lost footage gimmick is getting old, but leave it to Hollywood to milk something until it dies. lol.

As for "Prometheus", I just hope it's better than the last few "Alien" movies, as it seems the franchise sort of went down hill since "Aliens" came out. Not saying the other ones flat out sucked, but they were hardly on the same level of quality of the first two.

As for Resident Evil and Dark Shadows, I'm actually looking forward to "Dark Shadows" a lot because I know Tim Burton is directing it, and it features two great actors in Johnny Depp and Chloe Moretz, so you know you'll see a great film. Still not sure about Resident Evil though, but I'll probably end up seeing it anyway. lol.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by again Ruffyrider. :)

@fullerman5000

Well I have to admit that "World War Z" does sound kind of interesting. I never would've pegged Brad Pitt to want to star in a zombie film, but it should be a good movie. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us fullerman, and for reading my hub. :)

Oh, I've gotta see "Crack Whore"!!! It appears to be gross out squared. Anyway, who said horror films are dead? They seem to make more of those than any other genre, including romantic comedies, equally sickening perhaps. Very good job, dude. Thanks. Later!

Stevennix2001 profile image

Stevennix2001 4 years ago Author

Thanks. I'm glad you liked the preview hub. To be honest, I actually want to see "Crack Whore" too for some weird reason. It doesn't look like the typical normal movie that I would want to see, but the premise of it sounds so horrendously stupid that I can't help but feel like I have to watch it for curiosity's sake. lol. Anyway, thanks for stopping by.

piranha 3dd is awesome!!!! always love the dead movies no matter how many they do! Underworld and resident evil are good but there very similar and rip each other off. Halloween is awesome with rob zombie much better then the original and world war z sounds awesome as well. Another great hub!

Thanks Grimlock. I'm glad you liked the hub. To be honest, I just barely found out that "Piranha 3DD" was being delayed until next year when I saw that teaser they showed on spike. It should be interesting to see how it turns out. lol.

ParaNorman? sounds like a SciFi movie. or an SNL skit. or like something i wont be seeing lol

Stevennix2001 profile image

lol. I don't know. I think it might be good, as I heard it's made by the same guys that made "coraline", so it might be pretty good. Besides, it has to be better than half of the films listed here. lol.

I can see myself watching most of these movies, even the direct to video one and there are many. Well, maybe not the Miley Cyrus one, I have an aversion to her and The Bieber, but the others, yes please.

Thank you so much for the list. Voted up.

Stevennix2001 profile image

Stevennix2001 4 years ago Author

@optimus

lol. I wouldn't know. I never seen anything to do with the Amityville stuff, but I heard supposedly this one will be shot the same way that "Paranormal Activity" was shot; where they're going off the whole "found lost tapes" gimmick if you know what i mean. lol. Not sure how that will work, but i guess we'll find out next year.

As for chronicle, I have to say that I agree with you there. To be honest, I originally thought it was some sort of superhero movie when I read the premise of it on imdb, but after seeing the trailer, i can definitely see how it can be a horror movie instead. Although, I'm not sure if i'll see it in theaters or not, but it does look interesting. Anyway, thanks for stopping by grimlock

@vmartinezwilson

lol. That's cool. I'm with you on the whole Bieber and Cyrus thing, as I've never been a fan of theirs to begin with. Anyway, I'm glad you like the list though, and I hope you enjoy all the movies that you see on here that you liked. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us. :)

"Abe Lincoln, Vampire Hunter" looks like a hoot. And I'm a sucker for anything "Amityville," even though most of the films made from the story have been terrible.

GregDinskisk profile image

I gotta say, most of these look pretty decent. I LOVED the book, John Dies at the End. The movie is at Sundance soon, and will be epic. Prometheus is Ridley Scott's third Sci-Fi, and I expect it to be at the same level as Blade Runner and Alien.

Stevennix2001 profile image

@fatfreddycat

I don't disagree with you there about "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter", as it sounds like an interesting film. I'm just curious to see how well the movie ties itself to actual historical events involving Lincoln while still making it a horror movie about vampires. Anyway, thanks for stopping by to check out my hub. :)

@gregdinskisk

That's cool. To be honest, I never read the book, "John Dies At the End", but it does look promising from looking at the trailer. Plus, I'm kind of curious to see how well "Prometheus" will turn out, and if whether or not it'll tie it's story line in with the "Aliens vs predator" story arc as well, or it'll just ignore it completely. However, it should be interesting. Anyway, thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with us, and giving us the inside scoop about "John Dies At the End" appearing at sundance. :)

Hmm ok first thing here is that the trailer for Abraham Lincoln the vampire hunter you used here is not the trailer for the movie , just the book. That being said, i find it quite interesting that so many horror movies are going to come out this(even though some of them are actually b movies). I like the way you took time to present your list with detail

Peace!!

Stevennix2001 profile image

I know the "Abraham Lincoln" one isn't the trailer for the movie, but I just liked the book trailer so much that i decided to use it in it's place. Besides, the movie doesn't have any trailers at this time. However, I do appreciate you stopping by, as I'm glad you liked the hub. :)

Horror is my favorite movie genre and I had no idea so many are coming out soon! I will be avoiding the Woman in Black though because it has been my favorite ghost story BOOK for years. Afraid the movie will alter my imagination of the characters and story. Highly recommend the book! I will be watching for some of the others you mentioned. Really thorough and informative HUB on an interesting topic.

JustineBates 4 years ago

It's looking like the best year in horror in a long time - World War Z and Cabin in the Woods being the two I'm most looking forward to watching in 2012. I'll probably alsoend up watching yet another Paranormal Activity film, even though they're pretty much all the same. The success of Woman in Black, The Devil Inside and Chronicle gets horror off to a good start - I just hope some of them manage to make it to my top movie list at the end of the year and on http://www.filmcrave.com/list_top_movie.php?yr=201...

ok so first of all,this is truly a fine hub; a better job couldn't be done. Well i basically saw about half of the movies on this list ( some others like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3-D got moved over to this year) and i have to say the standard of "horror movies" have actually dropped. I mean imagine a movie like Resident Evil having the horror genre attached to it and you go to the cinema. you would definitely be like "ok. wow . horror?". On the other end though maybe we can just tag such movies as monster movies. Great hub once again..as usual

Peace

Stevennix2001 profile image

Stevennix2001 3 years ago Author

Well i know on imdb, resident evil was classified as a horror and action film. Plus, I think the term monster movies cover it as well, but you do make a good point that calling resident evil more of a monster film would be more accurate. as for texas chainsaw, ive seen the remake already, but i still need to see the original in order to review it. however, most of this info still needs to be updated though. ill probably do that once i finish publishing my preview hubs for 2013, as i think i have four more to go. anyways, thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts with us.
