Best Original Film Songs of the Decade

A few weeks ago, the people behind the Oscars announced that over 60 songs from a variety of films were eligible for awards consideration for next year's ceremony.

I hadn't really thought of it until now, but that announcement brought something to my attention: there are a lot of original film songs every year.

Like the films, however, only a select few are truly great. Whether they use orchestral music to their advantage, or they rely on simple instruments, or they incorporate some heavy or catchy lyrics, the great ones manage to leave a lasting impact, usually in relatively short time.

And below are ten songs from ten diferent films that I think deserve to be called great.

#10. "Knock Yourself Out" - I HEART HUCKABEES (2004)

Written and performed by: Jon Brion

It's something unattainable that you can't live without

And now the unexplainable has you riddled with doubt

Things begin, things decay

And you've gotta find a way to be okay

But if you want to spend the day wondering what it's all about

Go and knock yourself out

Why we're put in this mess

Is anybody's guess

It might be a test or it might not be anything you need to worry about

But if you're still in doubt

Go and knock yourself out

#9. "In the Deep" - CRASH (2005)

Lyrics by: Bird York & Michael Becker

Performed by: Bird York

Thought you had all the answers to rest your heart upon
But something happens, don't see it coming, no
You can't stop yourself
Now you're out there swimming
In the deep
In the deep

Life keeps tumbling your heart in circles till you let go
Till you she'd your pride and climb to heaven
And you throw yourself off
And now you're out there spinning

In the deep
In the deep
In the deep
In the deep

And now you're out there spinning
Now you're out there swimming
In the deep
In the deep
In the deep

In the deep

#8. "The Weary Kind" - CRAZY HEART (2009)

Lyrics by: T-Bone Burnett & Ryan Bingham

Performed by: Ryan Bingham

Your heart’s on the loose
You rolled them sevens with nothing to lose
And this ain’t no place for the weary kind

You called all your shots
Shooting 8 ball at the corner truck stop
Somehow this don’t feel like home anymore

And this ain’t no place for the weary kind
This ain’t no place to lose your mind
This ain’t no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try

Your body aches
Playing your guitar and sweating out the hate
The days and the nights all feel the same

Whiskey has been
A thorn in your side and it doesn’t forget
The highway that calls for your heart inside

And this ain’t no place for the weary kind
This ain’t no place to lose your mind
This ain’t no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try

Your lovers won’t kiss
It’s too damn far from your fingertips
You are the man that ruined her world

Your heart’s on the loose
You rolled them sevens with nothing to lose
And this ain’t no place for the weary kind

#6. "Vanilla Sky" - VANILLA SKY (2001)

Written and performed by: Paul McCartney

The chef prepares a special menu for your delight, oh my
Tonight you fly so high up in the vanilla sky

Your life is fine, it's sweet and sour

Unbearable or great

You gotta love every hour
You must appreciate

This is your time
This is your day
You've got it all
Don't blow it away

The chef prepares a special menu for your delight, oh my
Tonight you fly so high up in the vanilla sky

Melted tinbeads, cast your fortune in a glass of wine
Snail or fish, balloon or dolphin, see yourself shine

This is your time
This is your day
You've got it all
Don't blow it away

The chef prepares a special menu for your delight, oh my
Tonight you fly so high up in the vanilla sky

In the vanilla, in the vanilla, in the vanilla sky
In the vanilla, in the vanilla, in the vanilla sky

In the vanilla sky

#5. "A Fool in Love" - MEET THE PARENTS (2000)

(this actually isn't the right version, but it's all that's available on the web)

Written and performed by: Randy Newman

When you’re a fool in love
Seems like the skies are always gray
You turn around, there's someone in your way
And it’s you, and you’re in love

Never another spring for you

Never a robin to sing for you

You're out there on your own

When you're a fool in love

Never another spring for you

You're out there on your own

When you're a fool in love

#4. "Belleville Rendez-Vous" - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE (2003)

Music by: Benoit Charest

Lyrics by: Sylvain Chomet

Performed by: M5

I won't finish my life in Timbuktu
Cheeks so tight my lips are turning blue
I'd like to be wrinkly, utterly wrinkly
Wrinkly like a Triplet from Belleville

Don't want to wind my days in Acapulco
Stiff as a board dancing tango-tango
I'd love to be twisted, utterly twisted
twisted like a Triplet from Belleville

"Come on Girls!"

Swinging Belleville rendez-vous
Marathon dancing doop dee doop
Vaudou Cancan balais taboo
Au Belleville swinging rendez-vous

I won't be an old man in Singapore
Playing scrabble and eating petits-fours
I want to be wicked, utterly wicked
Wicked like the Triplets from Belleville

I don't want to end my life in Honolulu
Singing like a bird in an ormolu
I want to be as rough, every bit as rough
Rough, rough as a Triplet from Belleville

Swinging Belleville rendez-vous
Marathon dancing doop dee doop
Vaudou Cancan balais taboo
Au Belleville swinging rendez-vous

Don't mind ending my life in Katmandu
Signing with a sitar and a guru
But I'd prefer to be
Much prefer to be
Swinging with the Triplets from Belleville

"Come on Girls!"

Swinging Belleville rendez-vous
Marathon dancing doop dee doop
Vaudou Cancan balais taboo
Au Belleville swinging rendez-vous

Swinging Belleville rendez-vous
Marathon dancing doop dee doop
Vaudou Cancan balais taboo
Au Belleville swinging rendez-vous

#3. "The Wrestler" - THE WRESTLER (2008)

Written and performed by: Bruce Springstreen

Have you ever seen a one trick pony in the field so happy and free?
If you've ever seen a one trick pony then you've seen me
Have you ever seen a one-legged dog making its way down the street?
If you've ever seen a one-legged dog then you've seen me

Then you've seen me, I come and stand at every door
Then you've seen me, I always leave with less than I had before
Then you've seen me, bet I can make you smile when the blood, it hits the floor
Tell me, friend, can you ask for anything more?
Tell me can you ask for anything more?

Have you ever seen a scarecrow filled with nothing but dust and wheat?
If you've ever seen that scarecrow then you've seen me
Have you ever seen a one-armed man punching at nothing but the breeze?
If you've ever seen a one-armed man then you've seen me

Then you've seen me, I come and stand at every door
Then you've seen me, I always leave with less than I had before
Then you've seen me, bet I can make you smile when the blood, it hits the floor
Tell me, friend, can you ask for anything more?
Tell me can you ask for anything more?

These things that have comforted me, I drive away
This place that is my home when I cannot stay
My only faith's in the broken bones and bruises I display

Have you ever seen a one-legged man trying to dance his way free?
If you've ever seen a one-legged man then you've seen me

#2. "Falling Slowly" - ONCE (2007)

Written and performed by: Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova

I don't know you but I want you
All the more for that

Words fall through me and always fool me
And I can't react

And games that never amount to more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black

Well you have suffered enough and warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly, sing your melody
I'll sing along

#1. "Things Have Changed" - WONDER BOYS (2000)

Written and performed by: Bob Dylan

A worried man with a worried mind
No one in front of me and nothing behind
There's a woman on my lap and she's drinking champagne
Got white skin, got assassin's eyes
I'm looking up into the sapphire tinted skies
I'm well dressed, waiting on the last train

Standing on the gallows with my head in a noose
Any minute now I'm expecting all hell to break loose

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care but things have changed

This place ain't doing me any good
I'm in the wrong town, I should be in Hollywood
Just for a second there I thought I saw something move
Gonna take dancing lessons do the jitterbug rag
Ain't no shortcuts, gonna dress in drag
Only a fool in here would think he's got anything to prove

Lot of water under the bridge, lot of other stuff too
Don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passing through

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care but things have changed

I've been walking forty miles of bad road
If the Bible is right, the world will explode
I've been trying to get as far away from myself as I can
Some things are too hot to touch
The human mind can only stand so much
You can't win with a losing hand

Feel like falling in love with the first woman I meet
Putting her in a wheel barrow and wheeling her down the street

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care but things have changed

I hurt easy, I just don't show it
You can hurt someone and not even know it
The next sixty seconds could be like an eternity
Gonna get low down, gonna fly high
All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie
I'm in love with a woman who don't even appeal to me

Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy, they jumped in the lake
I'm not that eager to make a mistake

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care but things have changed
