Billy Currington Song Like My Dog

Updated on March 8, 2013

Such a FUNNY song!

I was sitting at the kitchen table one afternoon, minding my own business, writing and listening to the radio... when all of a sudden one of the FUNNIEST songs I have heard in a LONG time came on the radio!

With lyrics like "want you to love me like my dog does baby, when I come home want you to just go crazy, he never looks at me like he might hate me... want you to love me like my dog".. I stopped what I was doing in mid-type (what us writers DO when we are interrupted)... and listened to every word of the song, which was followed by some hilarious "howling" at the end of the song!

I immediately thought "WHO was that?" I recognized that it was Billy Currington and I do have one of his albums, but I do NOT have the CD that this song is on. Now I am not one to buy an album or CD because of my love of just ONE song, but I'm about to break that unwritten "rule" this week. (I do not have an iPod or MP3 player... YET!)

This song is so witty and brilliantly done, then I found out that it was co-written by Scotty Emerick and Harley Allen. THAT explains a lot! Harley Allen is the mastermind behind a bunch of huge HITS recorded by many country artists The songs he wrote or co-wrote that I am most familiar with were the ones recorded by Alan Jackson, songs like "Everything I Love (Is Killing Me), and "Between The Devil And Me."

Unfortunately, Harley Allen passed away at the very young age of 55 in March of 2011 from lung cancer. But he would be very happy to find out that this very funny song that he co-wrote with Scotty has found such a talent to record it ~ in Billy Currington.

Scotty went on to tell the story behind the song. He said that he and Harley were in Harley's living room. Scotty had brought his brand new eight or nine week old puppy over to play, because Harley also had a dog. The two dogs got along well, and were having fun. Scotty and Harley then started to talk about the differences between dogs and men, and how the love of a dog is unconditional. They thought it would be humorous to write something about how a dog is so accepting, and doesn't give you a hard time about anything, unlike the love of a woman!

This is how the song was created! Both writers loved the song since it was written, and would often perform it at different writer's nights held at venues all over Nashville. Scotty thinks that Harley would be very happy to know that the song is now recorded and released, and that people are enjoying it and relating to it.

Aww, they love so unconditionally

Like My Dog

You have to love lyrics like this!

"He never tells me that he's sick of this house,

He never says why don't you get off of that couch?

He don't cost me nothin' when he wants to go out

He never says I need a new attitude

He and my sister ain't always in a feud

When I leave the seat up he don't think that's rude

He never acts like he don't care for my friends

He never asks where in the h*ll have you been?

He never says 'I wish you made more money'

He always thinks pull my finger is funny."

"I want you to love me like my dog does Baby."

This is one of the best things about country music, the songs and lyrics are so relate-able and meaningful. Songwriting is a true craft, and some songwriters have just been blessed with such an amazing talent for it.

Scotty Emerick has said of his dear friend Harley Allen "We both loved the song. We both have always been proud of it. We thought it was funny.... We were close friends, it's a shame he's not here any more. I'm happy about it, and I know he'd be thrilled. He always wanted the song to find a home." And find a home it has... in the hearts of many country fans.

On a side note, I just recently bought a ringtone of this song, so now when my phone rings I hear "want you to love me like my dog does baby..." I smile every time!
