Review From Karen: Starts at the beginning and breaks the blues down in a well articulated way. It exponentially grows from there. Doesn't keep it safe but goes for that blues-jazzy feel throughout. Not your average blues book.

Green Day: Bullet in a Bible [Blu-ray]

Childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass) formed their first band, Sweet Children, in Rodeo, California when they were 14 years old. By 1989, the newly renamed Green Day independently released their first EP, '1,000 Hours,' which was well-received in the punk scene. Soon, the group had signed a contract with the local independent label, Lookout! Records. '39/Smooth,' Green Day's first album, was released later that year. Shortly after its release, the band found their permanent drummer, Tre Cool.

Introduction

Green Day is a punk rock band formed in 1987. The band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, drummer Tré Cool and guitarist. Tre Cool replaced former drummer John Kiffmeyer in 1990.

Green Day has sold over 70 million records worldwide! The group has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording. In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway. The musical was nominated for several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Scenic Design.

The Chords

All the chords are open shapes, meaning they contain open strings. In order to play with the recording, place a capo on the first fret. The capo allows you to utilize the open shapes as opposed to employing barre chords. When the capo is applied across the first fret, all the chords move 'up' a semitone (a distance of one fret on the guitar). In the verses, Em becomes Fm, G becomes A flat, D becomes E flat, A becomes B flat. In the choruses, C becomes D flat, B7 becomes C7. All of these shapes without the capo would normally be barre chords. Since barre chords are harder to form and don't allow the strings to ring as much, using the capo, makes all the chords much easier to play and produces the desired 'ringing sound' Of course, if you are playing this as a stand alone piece without the recording, the capo is not necessary. If you are working with a vocalist or singing yourself, you will have to adjust to the new key, which will sound a semitone lower in pitch.

The Strumming Pattern

The pattern is made up quarters, eighth and sixteenth note rhythm slashes. Eights and sixteenths usually denotes a slower tempo, but a fairly quick strumming hand. Treat the eights as downstrokes and the sixteenths as upstrokes. This corresponds to the same direction for quarter and eighth note rhythm slashes. Think of the eights and sixteenths as double the speed of the quarters and eighths. The verse pattern will be harder to execute than the chorus pattern. After strumming the the first quarter note slash with a downstroke, try to keep your strumming hand moving, as is you were still strumming in the eighth note motion. In essence, your strumming hand has a 'bounce' to it, even though you are strumming air. Watch the video, you will see my hand moving in this motion. Also, once you have the pattern worked out and you feel comfortable with it, accent on the second and fourth beats. This adds so much to the overall sound.

The Vocal Melody Arranged For Guitar

I have arranged the vocal melody as a fairly simple stand alone guitar piece or as a duet to be combined with the strumming chart. I have kept the melody down in a lower octave so it will be easier to play on an acoustic guitar. The melody is diatonic to the key of G Major. Because it is based mostly around the Em chord it is the sixth mode of the G Major scale: E Aeolian (also called the Natural Minor Scale). The F sharp adds a nice touch to the sound and takes the melody out of the realm of the Pentatonic scale. Obviously, I have simplified the guitar solo, and taken liberties with the entire piece to keep it at the beginner level. Once again, if you want to play with the recording or at the same pitch, you MUST place a capo on the first fret.

Vocal Melody Arranged For Guitar Combined With The Backing Track

Practice and master this video first, then try to play the melody with the backing track (below) alone.

Play Along Backing Track

This recording is comprised of the drums, bass and rhythm guitar part. There is a two bar count in on the drums. The melody kicks in on the third measure with the rhythm guitar (see the preceding video). This is in the key of G Major-E minor and does not require a capo.

Lyrics

"Boulevard Of Broken Dreams"

I walk a lonely road

The only one that I have ever known

Don't know where it goes

But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street

On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams

When the city sleeps

And I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone, I walk alone, I walk alone, I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone up there will find me

'til then I walk alone

Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, aaah-ah, Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah

I'm walking down the line

That divides me somewhere in my mind

On the border line

Of the edge and where I walk alone

Read between the lines

What's fucked up and everything's alright

Check my vital signs

To know I'm still alive and I walk alone

I walk alone, I walk alone, I walk alone, I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone up there will find me

'til then I walk alone

Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, aaah-ah, Ah-ah, ah-ah

I walk alone, I walk a...

I walk this empty street

On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams

When the city sleeps

And I'm the only one and I walk a...

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone up there will find me

'til then I walk alone...
