Lady Gaga

Our first topic up for discussion is the controversial Lady Gaga; who, whether you love her or hate her, is quickly dominating and influencing the music, fashion and media industries.

Lady Gaga, birth name Stefani Joanna Angelina Germanotta, was born in New York in 1986 and burst onto the music scene when her first single 'Just Dance' was released in April 2008. Since then Lady Gaga has gained increasing popularity. Whether there is speculation of her sexual preferences, astonishment of her latest outfit or simply the excitement of a new single, Gaga, it seems, is never out of magazine and newspaper headlines. Her latest tour, The Monster Ball, has been a resounding success with audiences being blown away by her outrageous outfits, energetic dance routines and spellbounding story telling. It seems that to many people Gaga can do no wrong and will just continue to go from strength to strength. Her eagerly anticipated third album is said to be finished but is waiting for release in 2011, the name of the album is a tightly guarded secret and will only be revealed at midnight on New Years Eve when Gaga has it tattooed on her body. No matter what its' title, the album will undoubtedly recieve huge attention.

Lady Gaga's Alejandro video; controversial or genius?

Her newest video, for Alejandro (still image to the right,) has caused controversy and admiration in equal proportions. Despite currently having just under 57million views on YouTube, Alejandro, has left fans both baffled and fascinated. The beginning of the video depicts Gaga watching over male dancers during a Cabaret style scene while sitting on a throne wearing binocular-like glasses. From this the video moves on to show Gaga simulating sex acts with three different men wearing nothing but heels and their underwear. The whole video is interspersed with shots of Gaga wearing a latex nuns habit and swallowing rosary beads. This act in particular, along with the wearing of a latex nuns habit, has caused widespread controversy among many Catholics, with the suggestion that Gaga is blasphemous. However, spokespeople have claimed that this is not the case and the video actually intended to show Gaga attempting to 'take in the Holy.' Thus this video has been viewed in comparison to Madonna's Like a Prayer video which also received widespread controversy.

However 'dark' the video may be portrayed, there are clearly millions of people out there that love Gaga and want to consume anything she releases. It is because of this love/hate relationship people seem to have with Gaga which has caused the video to become so highly viewed. Because, whether loved or hated, Gaga will continue to put out material which will undoubtedly recieve huge reception.

Lady Gaga: Fashionista or trying too hard?

Since her first single was released in 2008 Gaga's style has been the topic of many hot debates. Whether people think that her outfits are just a little to 'try hard' or pure genius, you cannot escape the weird and wonderful creations. Gaga herself has said that she wears whatever she wants in a bid that teenagers and her fans in general will follow suit and simply wear what they feel comfortable in regardless of what others think. For this surely Gaga should be admired and not criticised?

Fans have been wowed by the number of interesting pieces Gaga has been seen wearing and many have tried to copy her style. At the begin of her mainstream career Gaga was frequently seen wearing a bow made out of hair as part of her hairstyle. It was this look that Gaga was known for when she first appeared during 2008 and this which was copied by many of her fans, especially when going to see her perform live. The bow made from hair could be considered one of Gaga's more 'tame' creations, with others being much more bold and overstated.

One such example of this is the red lace outfit that she wore to the VMA awards. The outfit consisted entirely of red lace and even covered her face. The body of the dress was completely see through and revealed the red underwear which she had on underneath. In contrast to this revealing dress, Gaga's face was also entirely covered in lace with it projecting upwards to form a type of crown. This outfit gained much press attention at the time as it strongly contrasted the clean cut dresses and suits that other guests were wearing at the awards.

No matter what you think of her style you cannot say that Gaga is shy when it comes to what she wears. Bondage, lace, leotards and even lobsters; Gaga is definitely not afraid to express herself through her clothes. So whether you love them or loathe them, you can guarantee that the outrageous outfits will just keep on coming.

Johnny Depp

With the release of Pirates of the Caribbean being set for May 2011, we thought we'd delve into the life and style of its' lead pirate, Johnny Depp.

Depp is known for choosing to play eccentric characters, think Jack Sparrow, Sweeney Todd, the Mad Hatter and Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow so it's impossible to say that he takes the easy options. His breakout role as Edward Scissorhands not only launched his career as a serious actor but launched the relationship he now has with director Tim Burton. In 2005 the pair worked together on one of the most eagerly anticipated remakes of all time; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. When the film was first released people were curious to see how Depp would play Willy Wonka in comparison to Gene Wilder. Audiences were not disappointed when Depp created a character that seemed both innocent but incredibly demented and bruised by his childhood; diving deeper than Wilder had ever seemed to.Two years later, Depp brought to life Sweeney Todd. Whether genuinely a part of history or simply an example of an early Victorian urban legend, it was rare to find a person who had not heard of the barber that would butcher and have his victims made into pies; therefore a movie based on this story with the protagonist portrayed by Johnny Depp was bound to be a hit. The musical film which followed did definitely not disappoint, Depp played the role with a perfect blend of drama and mystery. Even the voice Depp decided on for the character worked perfectly; calming and smooth enough to lure victims but dark enough to just reveal a hint of mystery. Therefore it is highly likely that Depp will continue to play eccentric and iconic roles such as these, and of course Captain Jack Sparrow.

After widely being known for starring in cult roles, Depp burst onto our screens in 2003 as Captain Jack Sparrow with the release of the first Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC) film, 'The Curse of the Black Pearl.' Audiences around the world were fascinated to witness the adventures of the lovable rouge and hear his unbelievable tales. After such high demand the second and third films were released in 2006 and 2007 with the latest in the series being due for release in 2011. According to the Walt Disney press statement the forth film sees Captain Jack crossing paths with a woman from his past who he is unsure whether to love or fear as she could just be a ruthless con artist using him to find the fabled fountain of youth. After being forced aboard the ship of the formidable Blackbeard, Sparrow is unsure who he should fear the most. Despite Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley not returning in their roles as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann the forth installment is still set to be a massive success with huge names such as Penelope Cruz and Keith Richards being part of the cast. Titled 'On Stranger Tides' the forth POTC film will undoubtedly be a huge success.

Beyonce

A person has to be pretty special to be known by their first name alone, think icons such as Madonna or Bono, well, Beyonce is no different. Singer, actress, dancer and style icon, you'd have to travel a long way to find someone who has not heard of this diva. After the success of her collaborations with Lady Gaga and the release of her new single 'Why dont you love me?' we thought we would have a complete section dedicated to the triple threat.

The story so far...

After Destiny's Child (Beyonce's band with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams) announced a hiatus to persue solo projects, it is without a doubt Beyonce Knowles who has been the major success. Knowles' recorded her first solo single, 'Work it out' in 2002 for the 'Austin Powers in Goldmember' soundtrack, where she also starred opposite Mike Myers as Foxxy Cleopatra. A year later Beyonce released her very first solo album, 'Dangerously in Love.' To date the album has sold 4.7million copies in the US alone, had 2 number one singles and won Knowles four Grammy awards in 2004. Since the release of this album, Knowles has released another two, 'B'day' and 'I am...Sasha Fierce' with each being a resounding success.

With each single released Beyonce's popularity seems to be increasing; her latest album, 'I am...Sasha Fierce' (named after the persona Beyonce adopts on stage) saw the release of the worldwide hit 'Single Ladies.' The single itself on the album was a hit among fans but when it was released in 2009 with a video complete with amazing dance routine, the single became a worldwide success and was nominated for a total of nine awards at the 2009 MTV video music awards. After seeing the unique dance routine, there have been many parodies online and even by other celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, making the videos' and singles' success ever increasing.

It is clear that with songs such as 'Single Ladies' and 'If I were a boy' Beyonce will be around for a long time and has cemented her place in music history. Just last year she was voted as the winner of 4Music's 'Worlds Greatest Popstar' competition and it seems that there is just no stopping Beyonce Knowles.

Why dont you love me?

Beyonce's new single, 'Why don't you love me?' it set to be yet another hit for the singer. The song itself portrays Beyonce at her best, singing upbeat songs with real meaning. The message behind the song appears to be Beyonce asking why, if she does everything she thinks a good wife should, she is not loved. The video accompanying the single also seems to portray this, with Beyonce playing the stereotypical 1950's housewife, trying to do everything in her power to please her man but still not receiving the love that she wants. It could be that the deeper message behind the song and video is that we should not change to gain the love of another, instead we should just be ourselves.

Fans have already been praising the video for its clever styling and storytelling. To fit in with the stereotypical 1950's housewife look, Beyonce is seen wearing high-waisted fitted outfits and her hair in curls placed in a neat updo, typical of the era.

Despite most fans loving the new video there have been some negative comments made as the video shows Beyonce smoking a cigarette. Some people have agrued that this is not the correct image for a worldwide superstar to portray as she is a role model for many young, impressionable children. Although this is a valid point, it could be argued that being shown smoking is just another way that the video is staying true to the 1950's styling as at the time it was much more accepted.

Whatever the opinion on the latest video, it remains that the single is certain to be yet another huge hit for the star. Let's hope there's even more to come.

Style

There is absolutely no doubt that Beyonce is one of the great style icons of our time. Beyonce herself says, 'I like to dress sexy and I carry myself like a lady,' a statement which, I believe, is very much true. From the start of her solo career it has been clear that Beyonce dresses in a way which many women around the world find incredibly empowering; sexy, curvy and incredibly glamorous. Whether dressed down or dressed for an awards ceremony, there is no doubt that Beyonce always looks amazing.

Below are just a few of her fantastic outfits...
