Opposition To Dam 999 In Tamil Nadu

Opposition To Dam 999 In Tamil Nadu

So many films have been released in Tamil Nadu in the past and present. In future also many films will be released. But the dubbed film Dam 999 in Tamil has created strong opposition among the political parties in Tamil Nadu. Basically the people of Tamil Nadu are opposed to the film and in fact want to see it. But the Dravidian political parties like the DMK, AIADMK, MDMK, DMDK, PMK and others want to prevent the film from screening in the theatres in Tamil Nadu at any cost.

Theme Of Dam 999 Is Breaking Down Of A Dam

What is the theme of the movie Dam 999 to invite such an opposition in Tamil Nadu? Dam 999 movie shows thousands of people getting killed after a dam, which was built by corrupt people, breaks down and inundates the nearby area. The person who produced this movie earlier produced a documentary movie showing a dam breaking down in graphics.

Kerala Wants Mullaperiyar Dam Rebuilt

The political parties in Kerala including the ruling Congress and the opposition CPI (M) are united in demanding that the Mullaperiyar dam should be rebuilt. Tamil Nadu is opposing this demand. Kerala politicians are making the Kerala people fear that the Mullaperiyar dam may break down at any time and cause loss of lives and property. In order to sustain this unfounded fear, the film Dam 999 has been produced.

Karunanidhi Says He Is A Communist

The Supreme Court has given judgement that the Mullaperiyar dam is very strong and has permitted rising of the water level in the dam. But the Kerala government is refusing to heed to the judgement of the Supreme Court. Even while the court case is on, the Kerala government was trying to conduct a survey for the rebuilding of the Mullaperiyar dam. This survey started when Achuthanandan was the Chief Minister. The then DMK Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu Karunanidhi indirectly supported Achuthanandan by stating that he held deep belief in communist philosophy. In other words, Karunanidhi was indirectly endorsing the act of Achutnanandan, who was a diehard communist. Kerala politicians felt very happy at this stand of Karunanidhi. But Karunanidhi was defeated by the people of Tamil Nadu in last year’s assembly elections and Jayalalithaa came to the throne. Ever since, she has been opposing the actions of the Kerala government and its politicians. Had Karunanidhi been the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu now, things would have gone smooth for Kerala.

Has Karunanidhi's stand in the Mullaperiyar issue anything to do with the fact that Jayalalithaa is a Brahmin?

Tamil Nadu Communists And Congress Support Kerala Stand

The communist parties in Tamil Nadu including CPI and CPI (M) have supported the Kerala stand in this matter. The Congress Party in Tamil Nadu is also in support of the Kerala government. As the Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy is a Congressman, the Tamil Nadu Congress President Ghanadesikan extends support to Chandy. The position is while all the political parties are united in Kerala in the Mullaperiyar issue, most of the political parties in Tamil Nadu support the Kerala view. Can Gnanadeskian oppose Chandy? Can Ramakrishnan of the CPI (M) in Tamil Nadu oppose Achuthanandan?

Ban On Dam 999 Is Justified

Sohan Roy, the producer of the film Dam 999 states that the theme of the movie was obtained from a real incident that happened in China. But at the same time Sohan Roy has given an interview in television in which he emphasized the importance of reconstructing the Mullaperiyar dam. He has also stated that at least after seeing the movie Dam 999, everybody should veer round to the view to rebuild Mullaperiyar dam. Sasi Tharur has also supported the movie and its theme. But if somebody releases a movie depicting that the Idukki or Malampuzha dam breaks out killing many people, will the producer of the film or Kerala politicians welcome it and allow it to be screened in Kerala theatres? Therefore I feel that the opposition to the film Dam 999 in Tamil Nadu is quite justified.

Kerala Can Disobey The Supreme Court Easily

But whatever happens, Kerala may have its way in the dam issue. Even if the Supreme Court gives a judgement in favour of Tamil Nadu, Kerala can still disobey the Supreme Court quoting the precedence of the Tamil Nadu government which has disobeyed the Supreme Court in the matter of reservations. Supreme Court judgement clearly says that reservations for jobs and educational institutions should not exceed 50%. But Tamil Nadu has never cared for this judgement and has been implementing a 69% reservation policy in Tamil Nadu for many decades. Tamil Nadu government justifies this stance as it says that it benefits the people of Tamil Nadu. In other words, if a policy benefits the people, a State government can disobey the Supreme Court. Kerala can use this stance profitably and say that the rebuilding of the Mullaperiyar dam will benefit Kerala people. Supreme Court is also unable to restrain Tamil Nadu as the Tamil Nadu politicians are very powerful. Now Kerala can follow the precedence set by Tamil Nadu and disobey the Supreme Court judgement if the judgement comes against it.
