Emmy Predictions 2012 - DRAMA

The nominees for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced on Thursday, July 19. That's already a big day for most us, assuming you're planning on staying up late/early to catch the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises with an energized crowd.

As always, this article is the first in a series of three. . .

DRAMA SERIES

  • BOARDWALK EMPIRE
  • BREAKING BAD
  • DOWNTON ABBEY
  • GAME OF THRONES
  • THE GOOD WIFE
  • HOMELAND
  • MAD MEN

Most pundits are predicting the usual six nominees here, but I think the votes for that final slot will be too close. MAD MEN and HOMELAND are the frontrunners for the win. The most vulnerable here are BOARDWALK EMPIRE (reception cooled quite a bit after the first season), GAME OF THRONES and THE GOOD WIFE.

  1. Boardwalk Empire
  2. Breaking Bad
  3. Downton Abbey
  4. Game of Thrones
  5. Homeland
  6. Mad Men

LEAD ACTOR

  • Steve Buscemi BOARDWALK EMPIRE
  • Bryan Cranston BREAKING BAD
  • Kelsey Grammer BOSS
  • Jon Hamm MAD MEN
  • Damian Lewis HOMELAND
  • Timothy Olyphant JUSTIFIED

He has a number of episodes to choose from, but if Bryan Cranston submits "Crawl Space," his fourth Emmy's in the bag. Other possible choices include Michael C. Hall (DEXTER), Dustin Hoffman (LUCK) and Hugh Laurie (HOUSE).

  1. HUGH BONNEVILLE - Downton Abbey*
  2. STEVE BUSCEMI - Boardwalk Empire
  3. BRYAN CRANSTON - Breaking Bad
  4. MICHAEL C. HALL - Dexter*
  5. JON HAMM - Mad Men
  6. DAMIAN LEWIS - Homeland

LEAD ACTRESS

  • Glenn Close DAMAGES
  • Claire Danes HOMELAND
  • Mireille Enos THE KILLING
  • Mariska Hargitay LAW & ORDER: SVU
  • Julianna Margulies THE GOOD WIFE
  • Elisabeth Moss MAD MEN

Danes is the frontrunner, and unless any of the other ladies has a knockout performance that people are overlooking, there's little reason to believe she won't win her second straight Emmy. Former nominees Kathy Bates (HARRY'S LAW) and Kyra Sedgwick (THE CLOSER) are still in the running for nominations.

  1. KATHY BATES - Harry's Law*
  2. GLENN CLOSE - Damages
  3. CLAIRE DANES - Homeland
  4. MICHELLE DOCKERY - Downton Abbey*
  5. JULIANNA MARGULIES - The Good Wife
  6. ELISABETH MOSS - Mad Men

SUPPORTING ACTOR

  • Alan Cumming THE GOOD WIFE
  • Peter Dinklage GAME OF THRONES
  • Giancarlo Esposito BREAKING BAD
  • Walton Goggins JUSTIFIED
  • Aaron Paul BREAKING BAD
  • John Slattery MAD MEN

Esposito's the frontrunner (and deserves to win), but this is a category that sometimes rewards people a lot of us don't expect. His biggest competition comes from last year's champ Peter Dinklage, co-star Aaron Paul and John Slattery, who many believe to be overdue at this point.

Other possible nominees: Josh Charles (THE GOOD WIFE), Jared Harris (MAD MEN), Neal McDonough (JUSTIFIED), Nick Nolte (LUCK) and Mandy Patinkin (HOMELAND).

  1. JIM CARTER - Downton Abbey*
  2. BRENDAN COYLE - Downton Abbey*
  3. PETER DINKLAGE - Game of Thrones
  4. GIANCARLO ESPOSITO - Breaking Bad
  5. JARED HARRIS - Mad Men*
  6. AARON PAUL - Breaking Bad

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  • Christine Baranski THE GOOD WIFE
  • Anna Gunn BREAKING BAD
  • Christina Hendricks MAD MEN
  • Kelly Macdonald BOARDWALK EMPIRE
  • Archie Panjabi THE GOOD WIFE
  • Maggie Smith DOWNTON ABBEY

Hendricks would appear to be the most likely winner, but that was the case two years ago ("Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency"), and she still lost. In fact, as lauded as MAD MEN is, its principal performers haven't had any luck taking home Emmy trophies.

Other possibilities: Morena Baccarin (HOMELAND), Rose Byrne (DAMAGES), Michelle Forbes (THE KILLING) and Anjelica Huston (SMASH). She probably doesn't have much of a shot, but GAME OF THRONES' Lean Headey had some great scenes in the show's second season.

  1. CHRISTINE BARANSKI - The Good Wife
  2. JOANNE FROGGATT - Downton Abbey*
  3. ANNA GUNN - Breaking Bad
  4. CHRISTINA HENDRICKS - Mad Men
  5. ARCHIE PANJABI - The Good Wife
  6. MAGGIE SMITH - Downton Abbey

GUEST ACTOR

  • Dylan Baker THE GOOD WIFE
  • Jeremy Davies JUSTIFIED
  • Michael J. Fox THE GOOD WIFE
  • Chris Messina DAMAGES
  • Robert Morse MAD MEN
  • Matthew Perry THE GOOD WIFE

This one's a little harder to figure out. Baker's good in everything, and he gets to chew a lot of scenery in his guest spot. But I have a feeling it's between Fox and Perry, and the former could earn nominations this year for his respective appearances in both a drama and a comedy.

  1. DYLAN BAKER - The Good Wife
  2. JEREMY DAVIES - Justified
  3. BEN FELDMAN - Mad Men*
  4. MICHAEL J. FOX - The Good Wife
  5. MARK MARGOLIS - Breaking Bad*
  6. JASON RITTER - Parenthood*

GUEST ACTRESS

  • Loretta Devine GREY'S ANATOMY
  • Pamela Dunlap MAD MEN
  • Louise Fletcher SHAMELESS
  • Carrie Preston THE GOOD WIFE
  • Chloe Sevigny LAW & ORDER: SVU
  • Jean Smart HARRY'S LAW

I have a hard time seeing any of these ladies fail to make the official list. While I wouldn't mind seeing Loretta Devine repeat as the winner, Pamela Dunlap and Jean Smart are worthy alternates.

  1. JOAN CUSACK - Shameless*
  2. LORETTA DEVINE - Grey's Anatomy*
  3. JULIA ORMOND - Mad Men*
  4. MARTHA PLIMPTON - The Good Wife*
  5. JEAN SMART - Harry's Law
  6. UMA THURMAN - Smash*

DIRECTING

  • BOARDWALK EMPIRE (To the Lost) - Tim Van Patten
  • BREAKING BAD (Face Off) - Vince Gilligan
  • DOWNTON ABBEY (Episode 7) - Brian Percival
  • GAME OF THRONES (Blackwater) - Neil Marshall
  • HOMELAND (Pilot) - Michael Cuesta

Other possibilities: BOSS (Pilot), BREAKING BAD (Crawl Space), MAD MEN (Commissions and Fees), MAD MEN (Far Away Places) and MAD MEN (The Other Woman).

  1. Boardwalk Empire - TIM VAN PATTEN ("To the Lost")
  2. Breaking Bad - VINCE GILLIGAN ("Face Off")
  3. Downton Abbey - BRIAN PERCIVAL ("Episode 7")
  4. Homeland - MICHAEL CUESTA ("Pilot")
  5. Mad Men - PHIL ABRAHAM ("The Other Woman")*

WRITING

  • DOWNTON ABBEY (Episode 7) - Julian Fellowes
  • GAME OF THRONES (A Man Without Honor) - David Benioff & D.B. Weiss
  • HOMELAND (The Weekend) - Meredith Stiehm
  • MAD MEN (The Other Woman) - Semi Chellas & Matthew Weiner
  • MAD MEN (Commissions and Fees) - Andre & Maria Jacquemetton

Other possibilities: BOARDWALK EMPIRE (To the Lost), HOMELAND (Pilot), MAD MEN (Mystery Date) and MAD MEN (The Phantom).

  1. Downton Abbey - JULIAN FELLOWES ("Episode 7")
  2. Homeland - ALEX GANGSA; HOWARD GORDON; GIDEON RAFF ("Pilot")*
  3. Mad Men - SEMI CHELLAS & MATTHEW WEINER ("Far Away Places")*
  4. Mad Men - SEMI CHELLAS & MATTHEW WEINER ("The Other Woman")
  5. Mad Men - ANDRE & MARIA JACQUEMETTON ("Commissions and Fees")

CASTING

  • BOARDWALK EMPIRE
  • DOWNTON ABBEY
  • THE GOOD WIFE
  • HOMELAND
  • MAD MEN

  1. Boardwalk Empire
  2. Downton Abbey
  3. Game of Thrones*
  4. The Good Wife
  5. Homeland
  6. Mad Men
