Fancy Some Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll? Hit Me!

I can’t offer you sex and drugs and rock and roll, but I can introduce you to music’s poet of punk… The one and only Ian Dury! Famed with his band, The Blockheads, he used his droll sense of humour in lyrics to advocate disabilities rights. Great dead rock stars, like Jim Morrison and Ian Curtis, attract great film Directors. Ian Dury is not an exception with the release of Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll Directed by Mat Whitecross.

With a host of brilliant English Actors, you will be able to take a snap-shot look at his life, loves and struggles.

This Dury movie has been collated from the experiences of the close people who knew him and has been endorsed by his two children Jemima and Baxter.

I can recall at the age of 10 innocently thinking how odd and mysterious Dury was when he appeared on Top of the Pops. Until this day, I can see that he had an impact on me. Isn’t it sad you don’t know what you have got until it has gone?

This film highlights what a loss to a generation Dury was, the likes of which we will probably never see again!

The Punk Poet of A Generation who Advocated For Disability Rights in His Music!

I'm A Socialist ... Well That Is A Reason To Be Cheerful!

"You don't have cancer; it has you. The 'chemo' [chemotherapy] won't get rid of it. But it's another lease of - well, however long it is. You just don't know, but it's better than being hit by a bus tomorrow; you have time to sort yourself out."

"I'm a socialist, but I don't want to go on no waiting list and end up a dead socialist".

These are reasons to be cheerful – part 3 trillion and something... Ian Dury of the Blockheads fame was renowned to state this. Well, he did have a hit record from the same title! I think he lived his life in this witty, sarcastic vein, even when he endured three years of liver cancer treatment. Dury, however, lost his rhythm stick eventually on the 27th March 2000. If you know Dury and the Blockheads, you will know the hit song ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’.

Peter Doherty, Meet The Daddy Of Poetry!

I chose the above quotes as testament to the man himself. A London geezer, from ‘Arrow and Weald’ (Harrow and Wealdstone), who suffered the affects of polio at the age of seven, he famously nicknamed himself a ‘raspberry’. This was an abbreviation of the cockney slang term ‘raspberry ripple’, meaning cripple.

This, again, demonstrates the essence of Ian Dury – a man with dry humour and ability to lighten the cross he had to bare. Why do you think he wrote and released the record ‘Spasticus Autisticus’? This man suffered the indignity of calipers on the left leg and, apart from being a leader of a punk generation in the late 1970’s, his disability demonstrated normalisation within a society that was dogged with stigma on issues relating to such.

In fact, many people were institutionalised for ‘mental and physical handicap’ in those days, as if they had committed a crime of such! Sorry if this isn’t written politically correct, but the fact was that P.C. didn’t really exist then! It is exactly this in what I mean about Dury.

His distain in the demeaning and patronising International Year of Disabled Persons in 1981, as proclaimed by the United Nations, lead to the banning of 'Spasticus' from the BBC.  It is a dry protest song that didn't go down too well with the establisment at the time but Dury didn't give a 'monkey's' about what they thought!  He put his point cross in his usual lyrical pub-punk way and blew the cover on the condescending attitudes of those in power!

He was a voice to a generation, despite the stigmas and prejudice's of disability.   Look at how he has earned his place in history now?  He has become a major influence to punk, especially, the Sex Pistols. Pete Doherty, eat your heart out… Daddy’s here!

Ian Dury... I compare thee to a ... Pete Doherty!

Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll is not only the title of his single released by Stiff Records in 1977 but is a biopic film released early 2010. Starring Andy Serkis (Golum, Lord of the Rings), Ray Winstone (Qudrophenia, Edge of Darkness), Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribean: Dead Man’s Chest and At the World’s End), Olivia Williams (Dollhouse, Peter Pan) and Noel Clarke (Doctor Who, Torchwood), the movie takes the viewer through Dury’s life.

What a waste (or as Doherty would say, what a waster, what a f@king waster!)? I don’t think you can say that about Dury - his disability, unlike the poet Doherty and drugs, wasn't self inflicted! In fact, this made Ian a stronger character and more determined than the comparison between these two men!

Ian Drury had a major impact in the world of music and British society. This man was brought up to be strong, independent and non accepting of a passive recipient of disability. He was the poetic punk voice of a Nation and practiced what he preached.

He was the disabled socialist from hell, who confronted Thatcher’s Britain with energy and fortitude – a total one off that can’t be replicated today.

Ian Dury’s life is celebrated in this film. Do yourself and favour and go and check this British gem out! If you love films about dead rock stars, punk and rock, then don’t let this one pass you by!

NEWS FLASH! Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll was Nominated For BAFTAs!

Andy Serkis was nominated for best lead Actor. He really did portray Ian Dury most aptly but unfortunately he didn't win. Never mind Andy, it can't do your profile any harm now, can it?

The nomination for best music didn't win either. I am not sure it had much of a chance anyway! Ian Dury's hits come from the late 70's - 80's. Although poetic genius in places it is, afterall, punk music from a previous generation. It's still great music though, so why don't you treat yourself and buy the soundtrack! I did not know he passed away in 2000. My dad had the New Boots lp and used to play it a lot when I was a little one. also did not know about his disabilities and "championing" of disabled rights. Refreshing to hear that when lately I have been reading about how quite a few of the musicians I loved seemed to have problems with "cripples".

Another good read, shazwellyn.

Tammy... thanks for visiting. His story was constructed from much of his Son's experience. I think that it wouldn't be too much to infer that there is a little bitterness here and this can be skued, as demonstrated in the film.

Worth a watch my kindred!

I didn't know about this film - but I do now...Thanks. Dury was one of the true talents of the punk era. I was not a punk fan - considered myself too old - but as it started to die out, the true talents stood their ground and became legends. Dury was a king of rythm, and I've danced many sweaty hours away to his urban beat.

Your Hub does him justice - thanks!

Moesky... Art is about something unique that speaks for a generation. I think that Dury, as well as Joe Strummer (who was influenced by Ian), was one of those spokespeople for a generation.

Autisicas spasticus is a play on words, for instance, that really did shake a few people up in the establishment! It also had a message, written in with irony.

Dury was a hard hitting punk that no one would mess with, despite his disability.

Glad you liked my hub x

Shaz,

Reading Bat115's comment about "Dad used to play it..." OMG I am like Dad! I was in naval architecture college wondering why when dury was on the scene. Sex and drugs and rock and roll was what was happening! new boots was a great album. We listened and sang along in the clubs and pubs. Despite the wilderness, I managed to pass and go onto a good career in marine industries...still its great to hear there's a film out to watch for.

this kind of music is the twinkle in my eye that my kids don't understand! Ha ha on them.

We5... try not to worry too much about the age thing. Dont you think we can show how the younger generation can truely rebel! They dont know anything about it! They are too busy getting their aggression out on their game cubes... we got it out on the establishment! hehehe

Shaz,

LOL. And we continue to! Even though many of our contemporaries are now THE establishment! I think that makes it even more fun. thanks for the reply and the great hub examples...I'm such a grasshopper at this just yet.

Oh, and remember, it was our generation that invented the game cube!

Was he ever a bus driver? He taught at Canterbury College of Art after studying at the Royal college of Art.

So Wiki stated in my research. I will remove the bus comment, since you have now raised doubt. I would rather be sure, than misinformed. I thank you for raising this!:)
