Film Review: 16 Wishes (2010)
Be careful what you wish for!
Everyone has a wish list, things that you wish to have or do and 16 year old Abigail “Abby” Jensen has 16 wishes on her birthday. However, some wishes aren’t all they seem to be which summarizes Disney’s 2010 television movie, 16 Wishes.
In true Disney style, the film starts off with our heroine waking up to her 16th birthday, and wishing things were different. Firstly, her family barge into her room, then wasps infest her house and her neighbor, who also shares the same birthdate, gets a car for a present. However, all that changes when she receives magical candles as a birthday present and uses it to change her life.
Debby Ryan takes on the challenge of being Abby. Ms. Ryan is best known for her role as Bailey Pickett in the Disney series The Suite Life on Deck and The Longshots alongside Keke Palmer and Ice Cube. Her performance was enjoyable but wouldn’t class as award material. However, there was chemistry with her co-star, Jean-Luc Bilodeau.
Bilodeau, who played the character of Josh Trager in Kyle XY (which happens to one of my favorite shows), is Abby’s best friend (or BFF) since she was 3, Jay Kepler. His character is the voice of reason and tries to convince Abby to do what is right. However, being stubborn and selfish, Abby continues using her wishes until she wished for something she didn’t want.

Abby uses her wishes to get the upper hand on her nemesis and neighbor Krista Cook (Karissa Tynes). However, she also starts to change with all the luck she is having and ends up having something totally different from what she imagined.
The film is targeted at the contemporary young adult but has lessons for all ages – to be content with what you already have. At the end of the film, Abby realizes that everything she wished for changed her and the people around her. However, according to the ‘wish rule book’ she could not undo what had been done so she has to live with the consequences.
The film was enjoyable but then I rarely give negative reviews unless they absolutely suck. I can also see parents using this as a tool to educate their children about the responsibilities of choices and growing up. However, films like this are not meant to be taken seriously but with a light heart and hot chocolate.
