Legality of using other people's photos/images
We all know it's completely illegal to use another person's intellectual property without their consent, so I've created this article to make it easy for everyone to find legally available and usable free photos.
Warning: Some of the photos/image may require attribution when used and others require that the photo/image's legal owner be notified whenever his/her photo is being used, usually by sending them a link to the URL where the photo/image is being used. It's important to read the fine print.
Where can I find free photos or images that I can use legally?
The following are a few websites that allow you to use their images for commercial and editorial use at not cost to you, including photos of people. Do not resell or redistribute any photos or claim them as your own:
Freerange Stock: All images can be used for commercial or personal purposes, no attribution required the only thing you have to do is leave a comment under the photo. Some restrictions apply, read the FAQ and/or license terms for more info.
Microsoft Office Images - There is no need for attribution or author notification. This websites has a great collection of high quality pictures of people.
Dreamstime - Free images section - There is no need for attribution or author notification but you will need to create a free Dreamstime account. Be selective in the photos you download as this website only allows you to download 10 free images. If you want to download more you'll have to buy a subscription package. There are free pictures of people, but most of them aren't that great, although if your photo editing skills are good you might be able to fix some of them to make them more appealing.
stock.xchng - Attribution and author notification requirements vary per photo and will appear below each photo. You will also need to create a free stck.xchng account. There are free photos of people, but most of them aren't that great, although if your photo editing skills are good you might be able to fix some of them to make them more appealing.
FreeDigitalPhotos - Only the small size of each photo is available for free download and use, but attribution is required. No need to notify the author. This one does have lots of good quality photos of people.
FreeMediaGoo - No need for attribution or author notification. Clearly states all images are free to be used as desired. I still wouldn't go claiming an image as your own though. This website only offers a handful of photos but most of them are of very high quality. I didn't find any photos of people.
FreePhotosBank - No need for attribution or author notification. This one offers a decent collection of fairly good quality photos, but I didn't find any photos of people.
Open Clip Art Library - (Thank you to That Grrl for suggesting this link in the comments section below). A collaborative library of free clip art to use freely in any way you like. No attribution or notification is needed.
morgueFile - Terms and conditions of use appear beside each photo. They may vary from photo to photo so read them carefully. There are free pictures of people, but most of them aren't that great, although if your photo editing skills are good you might be able to fix some of them to make them more appealing.
Pixabay - Stunning public domain images - This one offers some high quality photos of people.
picdrome - Public domain images. Description from the picdrome website: 'Picdrome.com is a growing Public Domain digital photography collection, free of copyright and licensed under Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Public Domain Dedication. All images are free to download for personal, educational and commercial use, without restriction.'
Public Domain Pictures Pictures from this site are free to use but there is a warning to use pictures that feature products with care as well as a warning that some pictures might require model and/or property releases.
If you know of any sites not listed here that provide free, legally usable photos, let me know in the comments section below so that I can add it to the list. Thank you so much.
