Lucille Ball

The first in the Frieda's favorite famous red-head commedienne series is Lucille Ball.

Lucille Ball started it all for me. She was one of the very first comedienne I remember. She was always on and I watched her religiously.

I could go on forever about the memories I have of her, pretending to be her, playing Lucy with my sister, trying out her skits, never quite getting it right... because, well, for one thing, I didn't have the props or the appropriate sidekicks.

Truth is, there is no one in the world like her and there never will be again.

She is THE #1 comedienne of all time. Her career was the longest and most well known. She influence the world over with her style, comedy, and look. Not to mention, she's kissed Bob Hope, Ricky Ricardo, and a few other leading men in her time.

Every comedienne in this list is connected to her in some way. She IS the queen of comedy.

There are almost one million entries on google alone (even more if you consider the links within each entry). In fact you can find out about her right here on HubPages.

Why is Lucy so awesome? Here's what I think:

  • She's a fiery redhead.
  • She's not afraid of making faces.
  • She's great at playing dress up.
  • There's femininity in every crazy thing she does.
  • She's not afraid of acting like a buffoon.
  • She never acts like she's above her audience.
  • She acts out the "bright ideas" we all have but don't admit to.
  • Her timing is perfect.
  • She's not afraid to get messy.
  • She's a kid at heart.

I realize that I'm speaking about her as if she's still walking around town when she's not. But we can't be sad about this, not when there's so much of her she's left behind for us to laugh with, laugh at, and enjoy.

Let's look at some clips, shall we?

For the love of laughter

I love comedy. Emensely. I love most kinds of humor. I look for it. I see it in the most unlikely of places.

I'm not alone in this phenomena. In fact most people do whether they notice it or not.

It takes all kinds of humor to make the world go round. Some is tasteful. Some is not. Some makes you feel a bit cunning. Some makes you bust a gut till you can't see through the tears of laughter.

Suffice to say, those of you who know me or have read my articles and whatnot, know that I am a comedy lover. So it should come as no surprise that most of my favorite actors and actresses are comedians and comediennes.

When I took on this open request (see right sidebar capsule), I thought, "Right up my alley! Piece of cake."

I must say it was the biggest piece of cake I ever took a bite out of. My list got longer... and longer... and longer...

Aha! Light bulb. A three part series. I would divide my favorite comediennes into three groups. Redheads, blonds, brunettes.

I still struggled to narrow each list.

I find that research helps any situation. I went straight to the dictionary. My favorite. The Free Online Dictionary.

Here is perhaps where I should define what a comedian/enne is, you know, so we're all on the same page.

According to The Free Online Dictionary, a comedian (comedienne in feminine form) is as follows:

1. A professional entertainer who tells jokes or performs various other comic acts. 2. An actor in comedy. 3. A writer of comedy. 4. A person who amuses or tries to be amusing; a clown. and 1. an entertainer who tells jokes 2. a person who performs in comedy

Voila. So as far as this hub is concerned, while you may feel as though I'm stretching, please refer back to these definitions and agree that I have worked within the appropriate parameters.

I have put together in this series a list (by no means complete) of some of the most influential redheaded comediennes in my life. They've made me laugh. They've stuck in my brain. I think of them often. No one can do what they have done in the way that they've done it. I search out movies and shows that they have been in.

Each series will have a line of hubs, each dedicated to a different Frieda's favorite famous comedienne. And each line with have a feed to the rest them and a matching graphic (redhead, brunette, and blonde).

I sincerely hope that all of you enjoye this series as each hub comes out. Let me know if there are any you're looking forward to. Comments always welcome.

Enjoy.

Oh my, she indeed was a real part of our lives wasn't she? And to think how she embraced Television so quickly and made a fortune doing so. A very smart woman too. thanks Frieda. Cool series.

I love both Lucy and Carol. Maybe it wouldn't have worked because you kinda need a straight man but I wonder what kind of Motion Picture Lucy and Carol could have created as a comedy duo?

Excellent first choice! I love Lucy, too--she was hilarious and so talented, not to mention beautiful. Great job Frieda--I'm looking forward to the next in the series!! :D

Who doesn't love Lucy?!! When television first started in India 'Here's Lucy' and 'I Love Lucy' were among the few foreign programmes we got to watch...and it was such a treat! I don't think we missed a single episode...she just set the TV set ablaze!

It's true, "I Love Lucy." It's great to see some of her early work in movies - sorry I don't recall titles - she was a great villainess in one film.

I love lucy too!! Great job. I still say the line from the vitametavegamin episode. "Are you unpoopular do you pop out at parties" cracks me up everytime.

Violet Sun, I know, isn't it crazy. No matter how many times, still I laugh.

Sixty or so, I do believe popcorn and nuts are a fantastic idea!

Mr. Walrus, yes, she was brilliant. It's why she could be so funny. Had quite the keen business sense as well. Strong in many ways!

Hi Bill, good to see you here. Now you have me obsessed with the thought. I'm going to be thinking about that until I get something concrete in my brain. I can't believe they weren't ever in a film together. Could this be so?

Hey there Janetta. She was beautiful, wasn't she? I'm hoping I can get the rest out quickly. The scores on some are horrendous so I have to rethink my tactics on some of them. I want Carol out next!

FelineProphet, what a perfect description, "ablaze". Absolutely. Thanks for the info too.

Tom, like most of my favorite comediennes (come to find out) Lucy did make a fantabulous villainess!

Triplet Mom, that is one of my all time favorites of hers! My sister and I practiced that skit A LOT!

Great to see Lucy in a serious role. I used to watch I Love Lucy as a kid, and I really only knew her comedy. I wasn't even aware that she did dramatic roles. Shows you what i knew! Enjoyed it, Frieda.

Thanks Cindy! I know. So many of us are caught up in our favorite shows and don't get the opportunity to see the rest from our favorites, especially if they're not played on television or are played every once in a great while. So glad you enjoyed.

Wonderful Hub tribute to an original lady of comedy. I can catch some of her episodes on 'Nick at Night' show, and of course, on TvLand. Great job, Frieda.

My uncle worked with Lucy in vaudeville. His comment: she was always out for the laugh. She was not just funny funny, but she was smart funny. She honed her craft and understood it well.

You're right about that, attemptedhumour, her timing was quite impeccable, part of her brilliance that made her a star.
