Fun things to do on the weekend: Never be bored again
How to pass time on the weekend? What to do on the weekend when you are alone? Find creative answers as this post is a comprehensive list of things to do - which will keep you occupied and entertained whether you are single, a couple or a group of friends. Who said that going to the pub and getting drunk was the only fun thing to do on a weekend? Read on and learn how to make Saturday and Sunday count – Never be bored again.
1) Paint: Throw colors on an empty canvas
It's a myth that you need to be trained in fine art to pick a piece of canvas and go wild. Buy an empty framed canvas, few oil paints and brushes online or from a store to get started.
The trick is to not learn any painting techniques or look at any artistic references. Let your brush flow boldly, paint with your heart, throw colors around the canvas and let your imagination run away with you.
2) Go cafe hopping: Spend the weekend trying out different cafes
Cafe hopping is a spin off on pub hopping. The good part is that it won't burn a hole in your pocket or leave you with a hangover. Hang out at a series of cafes across the city, some of which you may be familiar with and some not.
From good old Starbucks around the corner to a hole in the wall cafe that you have never heard off, you can get plenty of caffeine shots that will smoothly take you through the weekend. While you are at the cafe, you can spend hours reading a book or playing games on your iPad/Kindle Fire while you sip on coffee and sample unique cookies and biscuits one after another.
3) Bake desserts or sweets
The most fun thing about baking is not knowing how to bake and starting from scratch. Baking can also be very relaxing and therapeutic. Get hold of a simple, pretty looking recipe, buy the required ingredients from the supermarket and start baking.
Adding your own twist to the recipe will make baking even more fun. For example, write a naughty message while icing a cake that you are making for your partner.
4) Camp in the backyard
If you don’t have the energy or money to plan a real camping trip on a weekend, you can make do with a fake one and still end up having more fun.
Pitch a tent in your backyard, light a small and safe fire if you have open space, and play Spin The Bottle. At least an alligator won't be lurking around in the dark.
5) Have a movie watching marathon
This is one of the simplest ways to have fun on a lazy weekend because it requires no planning at all. Queue up Hollywood blockbusters, the best cult classics, rare foreign films or interesting documentaries in your playlist.
Go to your local store to grab DVDs or stream movies online on Netflix. Call your friends for a sleepover, make some microwave popcorn and watch movies back to back. The weekend will go away in a jiffy.
6) Host a gaming marathon at home
Call all your uber cool gaming geeky friends at home, arrange for mouth watering munchies, play some funky music in the background and set the scene for an exciting gaming marathon.
You can play games on your Xbox, Play station or your good old PC. Keep incentives for the winner that everyone will kill for. Cheers, screams, hooting, jumping on the couch - watch the chaos unravel.
7) Become an urban shutterbug: Photograph your city
iPhones and android smartphones, digital cameras and other mobile point and shoot devices have made it extremely easy to make a decent photographer out of everyone.
Walk through the laneways of your city and photograph whatever you can – quaint coffee shops, people bargaining for discounts, a stray cat, a cocky message written across the walls of a famous monument or the stoic face of a cop. Use Photoshop or Instagram to edit your photos and share them with your friends.
8) Attend a Zumba class
Zumba is a terrific fitness based dance workout routine. While it has been widely reported as an effective way to burn off the calories, a Zumba class could be the much needed motivation you needed to exercise and turn your lazy lifestyle around.
Lookout for popular Zumba classes in your city and book yourself in for a weekend session. Like Zumba, if you come across other forms of vigorous but fun workout sessions, feel free to give them a shot. Regardless of what you chose, make sure you pick a knowledgeable and certified instructor/class.
9) Soak up in an aromatic bath
There may be no need to spend cash on an expensive spa treatment at a resort when an aromatic bath can be easily set up in a bathtub at home. You will be amazed to see how the weekend hours just pass by as you relax in an exotic bath.
Gather aroma sticks, aromatic candles, massage oils, bath salts, loofahs and other bathing cosmetics that grab your fancy. Light the aroma sticks and colorful candles around your bathtub, bubble up the tub, drop your bathrobe and soak for as many hours as you like.
If you want to make it exciting, set up a romantic bathtub rendezvous with your girlfriend or boyfriend. Get a bottle of red and lie in the tub for hours as the both of you do your own thing – whether it is reading a book or tapping away on your tablets.
10) Take a spontaneous road trip to a nearby picnic spot
Teaming up with a few friends, throwing in some camping gear, fuelling up and driving to a nearby picnic spot is the perfect way to have an awesome weekend. The more spontaneous and unplanned it is, the better.
11) Learn basic gardening
It is a myth that digging with a shovel and moving the lawn is tedious and boring. It depends on how often you do it and who you do it with. Rolling up your pants and getting your hands dirty on the weekend can be a lot of fun, especially if it is done with a few friends over a few beers.
Find someone who likes gardening and ask them to give you and your friends some tips. Put your gloves on and have fun getting dirty as you weed out the garden, maybe even sow some seeds, trim the bushes and water the plants.
12) Attend a city event
Cosmopolitan and metropolitan cities are known to be abuzz with food festivals, musical concertos, theater nights, amusement parks, film screenings, events for kids and shopping sales during weekends.
Get some fresh air and ideas by walking around downtown, meeting new people and checking out what trending and what's not.
13) Visit the library: Great place to pass time alone or with friends
Libraries are not boring places for nerds, geeks, students and academicians. They are actually quite the opposite. During weekends, libraries are thronged by people of all age groups and from all walks of life only because there's something for everyone.
When you visit the library, you could expect a film screening going on in one corner and a tech forum in another. Kids could be huddled up for a DIY tutorial in one room while an expert could be sharing tips on personal finance somewhere else. There could be literally something for everyone.
And if none of that interests you just pick up a best seller and spend your Saturday reading, relaxing and mingling with like minded book lovers at the library.
14) Take a test drive of all the expensive cars and bikes in your city
A fashionable encounter with a drop dead expensive motor is every car lover's ultimate fantasy. For car and bike enthusiasts, there are fewer better ways to spend the weekend than test driving the crème de la crème of things on two and four wheels.
In case you are not an automobile freak, you can always ride pillion or take the seat next to the driver. Step out in your snobby attire, pose as a potential customer in a car or bike shop, ride that Harley or drive that Lamborghini to feel like a king. Flaunting pictures of your escapade on Facebook is obviously a given.
15) Take a crash course in Taekwondo or other forms of martial arts
Stirring up some excitement and wild fun into a boring weekend is possible if you take a crash course in Kung Fu, Taekwondo or any other Oriental martial art.
If you take a liking to the sport, you could pursue it beyond the weekend. If you don’t, take it as a weekend full of exercise and a massive adrenaline rush.
16) Take a local city tour
Touring your own city in a double-decker bus is like the feeling you get when you come across an old t-shirt in your closet which you thought you threw away.
Your city is full of surprises waiting to be explored. Hop aboard a city tour bus, carry some sandwiches and take in local city sights with a fresh pair of eyes.
17) Create a mega Lego house
Lego is not just fun for kids but also for adults. If it's more than a few years or decades since you have opened a Lego set, it's time to get in touch with your building skills again.
Get a complex Lego set, mix Lego blocks from other sets and create something truly original. You won't know where time flies and you might just rekindle your interest in design.
18) Solve a 10,000 piece puzzle with your family or friends
Solving a grand 10,000+ piece puzzle is like looking for a needle in a haystack which is sprayed silver. Grand puzzles having images of portraits or natural scenery can be very complex to solve.
But once you start getting the hang of it you won't be able to eat until you complete the jigsaw. It's a good way to spend a weekend at home bonding with friends or family.
19) Go to a goth bar or a gay nightclub
Going to a place which is culturally shocking and surprising at the same time can be entertaining and a lot of fun. Try visiting a forum that claims to teach Wicca, learn Buddhist meditation, try shopping on the streets of a gay neighborhood or visit a rehabilitation centre with reliable company.
Not only will you open yourself up to different lifestyles, you will also have a lot to blog about until the wee hours of Sunday night.
20) Art connoisseurs take note: Volunteer to be a museum/gallery guide for the weekend
If you are an art connoisseur, volunteering as a tour guide for a local museum can make your weekend extremely interesting and intriguing.
As a volunteer or tour guide, you can make new friends, explore every nook and corner of your favorite museum/gallery and learn facts about art and history. Best of all, you will be able to put down your volunteering experience down on your resume.
21) Hit the beach or the pool
Passing time during a weekend can usually never be a problem for people living by the beach. All they need to do is hit the beach, kick back on a lounger and watch the day go by.
For those who are not so lucky, an indoor heated pool in winter and an open pool in summer can come to the rescue. Whipping cocktails, sunbathing, barbecuing and flirting are fun by-products of this activity.
22) Clean your house and have a garage sale
Spring cleaning the house to have a garage sale can be made fun when you know that there is money at the end of the tunnel. Instead of simply dumping all your stuff in the bin, think about how you can make saleable pieces from your junk.
Brainstorm with friends about how you can market your garage sale in your neighborhood, either though Craigslist or flyers or bulk emails. A successful garage sale will make for a productive weekend full of sales, bargains and banter.
23) Have a themed sleepover or a themed house party
Host a good old sleepover with friends and make it memorable by adding your own twist to it. Pick a theme for the sleepover – it could be anything from Italian, goth, countryside style, hippies in the 70s to Woodstock.
Make sure you stick to the theme while planning every single element of the sleepover or house party, whether it is the food, the dress, the music or the décor.
24) Play monopoly or other iconic board games outdoors
Monopoly is a popular classic board game which can appeal to all age groups. Once the dice rolls, the game can go on for days together. Spending the weekends with bickering players haggling about what they should buy or sell can be a lot of fun.
If your Monopoly board game is biting the dust in the labyrinths of your closet, it is time to show it the light of the day. To make it more interesting, take your board game to a public park. Carry along a basket of munchies, sodas and everything else to keep those hunger pangs away.
25) Become an everyday expert: Blog about a topic that you are knowledgeable about
Instead of spending time blogging lazily about how your day was or ranting about a political campaign, blog about something that you have expertise or practice in.
It could be everyday tips about baking the perfect cupcake, what to talk about on a first date, dealing with divorce trauma, how to deal with jetlag, best sightseeing spots of Melbourne or how to plant a sapling. Make a difference in the lives of other people who are trying to look for everyday advice.
26) Attend a yoga class
Yoga or meditation may be a fad for those who want to show off their pseudo Zen personality, but these ancient practices are actually rooted in spirituality, healing and relaxation.
Besides relaxation, Yoga is also known to be a fantastic stretching exercise – the perfect way to loosen your body up without working up a sweat.
Yoga classes are usually known to be carried out at fitness centers, spas or martial art studios. Do a quick background check of the facility and its instructor before you sign up.
27) Re-arrange the décor of your house/apartment
Re-arranging home décor is the easiest, the most inexpensive and the most fun way of renovating your house. A few hours on the weekend will make your house look like new, at least from the inside.
Changing the placement of furniture, adding paintings or printed wallpapers to empty walls or dyeing the curtains to a different color are some of the things that can completely transform the vibe of your house. All you need are some creative ideas and some time on the weekend.
It is amazing how just a few simple touches to the interiors of a home or apartment can make it look fresh and vibrant again. Try it.
28) Ride public transport of your city to random stops
In the everyday rut of life, you may have become bored of your surroundings. To rediscover your city, hop onto a train and get off at the end of the line.
Take a friend along as you discover new suburbs and taste the flavors of cultural diversity in your city.
29) Catch and cook your own fish
Fishing can be boring if you are doing it alone but it can be tons of fun if you have friends and family around. Not only can you crack jokes or soak in engaging conversation while you wait for the fish to bite, cooking together can be a lot of fun too.
You don't necessarily need big boats to go out in the sea. A beach, pier or even a lakeside spot is all you need to throw a line and watch those hours fly by.
30) Babysit your niece, nephew or sibling
Babysitting may be synonymous with a tiring summer job for many, but it can be a lot of fun if it is done with the right attitude. If you are fond of kids, babysitting can be the perfect way to spend a fun weekend, and to make some money on the side.
Playing clown, reading out stories, watching animated movies, whipping up nice snacks, see sawing, jumping on the trampoline – these are just some of the fun things that you can do with a child.
