Green Day Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong Has A Meltdown on Stage.

Source

Green Day performing on Friday at the iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand and for some reason had been told they only had one minute to finish their set. At that front man of Green Day took offence at their time being cut and had a meltdown. Screaming and yelling the f*** word repeatedly. Before taking his guitar and smashing it to pieces and threw the neck part into the crowd. He screamed about being around since 19 f***ing 88 and keep saying this is a joke. He saluted with his middle finger and walked off the stage. There is more to this and if you view the video you will see just what happen that night. Just to let everyone know the f*** word is used throughout this video has he goes on a profanity-filled rant, and if that might offend you please do not watch the video.

Source

Green Day has announced Sunday two days after the meltdown that Billie Joe Armstrong is seeking treatment for substance abuse but no other information was giving. The band also said, "We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas,"

Green Day is set to kick-off their tour in November 26 in Seattle, but with frontman in rehab the band is unsure of that date.

When Billie Joe Armstrong walked off stage after the meltdown people were cheering and not booing, so I think if the up and coming tour is still on this meltdown will do more to sell it out in every city they appear in.

Source

Green Day has a track record of turning out hit albums and song and they are great performers on stage if you have ever seen them play live you know that. And I can understand how he might have been so pushed to end up having this meltdown. But has I don’t have all the information I need to say who was right or wrong I think this band should have been giving more respect than they got .

Source

Green Day is also set to release another album, "Uno,” sometime on Tuesday. And that one will be followed by two other albums, "Dos" and "Tre," scheduled to come out soon.

Billie Joe Armstrong was slated to be a mentor to participants on The Voice that might be in jeopardy now.

The first video has been restored, thanks for letting me know it was missing !

I was in Vegas this weekend, but I was visiting family. I didn't get to see the iHeartRadio festival, but it was lively in Vegas because of the festival. Great work on your coverage of this. I might not have known this happened had I not seen this Hub.

Hi Kashmir:)

I heard about this as it happened through my 17 yr. old daughter. I don't condone the bad language but can well understand the frustration and insult in having inflexible time constraints. I'm glad he is seeking therapy. Recording, practice, and being on the road must take its toll. I agree that they should have been shown more respect. Thanks for writing about it!

Oh Tom,

Watching the first video made me sad. There are so many people in all walks of life who deal with extreme stressors with D or A, yet it slaps us in the face in situations like this.

Sadly, people indeed see this as an attraction with the cheering. In a psych facility, such behavior is a meltdown with specific indications warranted...none of which include cheering.

Listening to the second video reminds me of the incredible talent. I pray he stays around for the long haul and gets some help.

Voted UP and Interesting. Hugs, Maria

Wow, kashmir - I hope and pray he gets the help he needs, but if their time was cut short, that is not right either. I did not watch the first video. I know all too well of the terrible disease of addiction ad it runs in my family, but there is hope for all if they want to get help. I have always loved Green Day. Thanks for sharing this information with us dear one. God bless you. In His Love, Faith Reaper

I'm not familiar with the gentleman in question, but we all have to learn to deal with disappointments in life.

He could have chosen to make his point without the colorful language, although, I think we've come to accept such behavior as part and parcel of the music industry. Drug use always seem to be the trigger. On the other hand, rock bands like the Who have made an art out of behaving badly for a very long time, and did very well from it. So maybe this is what the fans expects.

Well we all have our good days and bad. I don't know this band but in all due respect to them and if they are a well known and liked band then they must also be given more respect then they had been given. I see nothing wrong with letting off steam if you are among the tops in your field as you said their fans didn't boo but cheered. Actually the act of bashing the guitar may go down in history as even Little Richard at one time in his career burned a piano. Thanks for the information.

I was shocked at the behavior, but part of me understands dealing with ‘time left’ flashing at you – as if the art of music and he spirit of performing could be sandwiched under those kinds of time constraints, as well as everything else. However, this is no excuse...he definitely needs to get it together, for sure. But between you and me, I had to laugh at the Justin Bieber comment. Interesting hub, Kash.

Victoria Stephens profile image

Oh wow fantastic!

I know like many others I shouldn't condone this outburst but to hell with that! Here is one dude that has probably worked incredibly hard and for long hours to prepare for that show and possibly took time away from doing other stuff that he loves or spending time with his family.

To him one minute is insulting and it's an injustice. He wasn't afraid to stand up and be counted no matter what the consequences would be. He wasn't afraid to tell the producers where they can stick their lousy one minute and he wasn't afraid to let his audience know how he felt.

If more people did that then the world probably wouldn't be in the state it is in. Far too many people are willing to sit down, shut up and do as they are told these days. Good on him!

kashmir56 profile image

kashmir56 4 years ago from Massachusetts Author

Great hub, don't get me wrong I love Green Day started listening to them when they first came out but I think he might have went a little overboard. We all get frustrated in life it is how we react to frustration that makes or breaks us. Hopefully he gets the help he needs I would hate to see such talent just go to waste over addiction, voted up awesome and shared.

Very interesting article. You have put a lot of work into this and the images are brilliant! Must admit did not watch the video but at least you warned people about the 'F' word being used throughout. Unless one has ever been an entertainer, they cannot truly relate to what took place. As an entertainer, you're promised a specified amount of time to do your set. This set is one that has been carefully prepared, and usually, your best offering is last as the saying, "leave them something to remember you by" is a golden rule in the business. When you're cut short, everything goes astray. There's no wonder he got ticked off. In addition, entertainers have ego's which give them the strength to perform. This was obviously a blow to that. Combine the two and an explosion is bound to occur. He did nothing more than hundreds of performers have done in the past. I once saw Chuck Berry do much worse when the houselights came on, ending his show early. The only difference is that he didn't have youtube videos of the situation to contend with afterwards. Good Hub!

Wow! Fascinating hub and that was one hell of a tantrum!! It's a pity though that the guy doesn't have more words in his vocabulary other than the f****! The thing is, when you use f**** too often, it kind of looses it's effect after about the second time. So unfortunately, rather than getting across how angry he was, he made himself look like twat!

The guy also did look like he was junked up to the eyes! So no wonder he lost it. I also wonder, when singers/groups have been around for a while, if they get a bit nervous when they think they're getting slighted? Perhaps seeing it as new groups/singers getting the limelight over them? Having said that, if their time was cut short, then no wonder he lost the plot! Not only that, I agree with Rosemay, it's the fans that are slapped in the face as well!

Fabulous and fascinating hub!!! Voted up + shared!

I'll be so disappointed if this affects his role as a judge on The Voice. It was the one thing I was really excited for on the show.

I agree with you, I'm torn without knowing more. On the one hand, how disrespectful a thing is that to do to musicians? They work hard, they hone their craft and they make their money off of performances. I used to work in the concert/festival industry, so I know just how hectic working out a stage lineup can be. Things go wrong, it seems there's always less time than there should be. So, I definitely understand it from the crew's perspective, too. It sounds like it was just a mess all around.

Great article, I wouldn't have heard about this otherwise! Voted up and sharing.

Interesting hub - no matter how long I live, I will never understand how people feel entitled to lose all semblance of good manners, because they feel they are in some way 'special' - I understand that he has problems, but so do many others who still manage to retain at least a veneer of dignity - why excuse this person's childish rantings, when we find the behavior of the common street brand of drunks and druggies, offensive enough to drag them of to jails - at least you have put it out there -so people can judge for themselves - B.

Hi Tom-I had seen and heard a little about the rant on the news but didn't know much. I agree that I can see how it felt like an insult to him but it is obvious he has some mental health and addiction issues going on. I can't imagine what it would have been like to be in that audience watching the melt down. I certainly wouldn't have cheered but worried about the artist. I am glad to hear he went into treatment. I wonder if the tour for Nov 26 was re-scheduled. It's obvious he needs time to re-group. Great hub my friend :-)

Used to love Green Day, particular the Rookie album. Billie should perhaps undergo some anger management therapy. * I did see the 1 minute sign,... was it true that their set had been cut short?

I saws that meltdown. It was a classic rock n roll meltdown. i found it both hilarious and pathetic. He made some good points, but, you catch more flies with honey. But, the crowd seemed pleased with the meltdwn and I'm sure all who nwere there will never forget it!

Hi PDXKaraokeGuy nice to see you, yes it was a good hard rock meltdown but has you said the crowed was pleased with his meltdown. I to feel there had to be a better way to handle this situation and ranting and raving is not the right way. But now they are back on the road doing this years tour, hope he makes it through it without a relapse . Thanks so much for stopping by and to for your nice comments !

I like Green Day and it's said to see Billie is having issues like this. He really needs to fix whatever issues he has. I'd hate to see him end up like other celebrities that we lost too soon.

Hi Learn Things Web nice to see you, yes you are so very right and he has gone through treatment and said to be better now. And already back on tour, hope he makes it through. Thanks so much for stopping by and to for your nice comments !

I've been listening to Green Day since I was in high school, which was when they were just getting started. I somehow missed this bit of news, though! Definitely interesting. I still like Billie Joe, even with his flaws (we all have flaws, after all).

lol. That guitar did not want to be smashed. It must have come as a bit of a surprise when he had to work so hard to make his point. :)

Perhaps the unplanned death of a favourite instrument was enough to put him into rehab. "I did what???"

Hi Tom, a very interesting article for sure! I remember when Green Day came out and I liked a few of their songs but never continued to follow them, I wasn't into heavy metal but I think they're more like punk right? Anyways, now that I look at this article I notice the lyrics of that song are really positive and Green Day itself is a positive name lol! Something I never noticed before. Glad to hear this interesting information...No he's not like Justin Bieber! LOL.

Thanks for sharing this story, voted up and interesting....good stuff

I really don't think it was a huge meltdown I mean it could have been worse and well....I'm not that critical...right...people are people...
