My Grandmothers chicken soup was and is the ultimate cure for colds and new medical research says that chicken soup really does work just like Grandma always said it did. Chinese Grandmothers make hot and sour soup to break up chest congestion. The garlic, ginger, and rice wine vinegar it contains will open you up and get rid of the congestion in no time at all. And in other parts of the world there are soups known for their health benefits also.

Do you know that Grandma's Chicken Soup may well be the best home remedy ever invented. And medical research now shows that there's a good bit of science behind the proclaimed health benefits of Grandma's Chicken Soup. Because you see Chicken Soup really does prevent the bodies white blood cells from triggering inflammation and congestion in the chests upper airways.

So yes there is a reason to keep a pot of Grandma's Chicken Soup simmering when you have a cold or flu. It is the rich steamy broth that breaks up the congestion and the soups spicy ingredients garlic, and onion that have known antiviral properties. The garlic in the soup also gives the soup a great health benefit both in fighting a flu or cold and garlic is also good for your heart and high blood pressure.

Grandma's Favorite Chicken Soup

Below is the ingredients you will need for this soup which incidently is also known as Jewish Penicillian.

You Will Need

1. 1 Whole Hen , ( yes go to the trouble to find a hen in your supermarket , not a fryer ) Cut your chicken up into eight pieces.

2. 1 Tablespoon Cayenne Pepper.

3. 1 Tablespoon of Fresh Ginger

4. 2 Pounds of Carrots peeled and Diced.

5. 2 Pounds of Purple Sweet Onion Diced Fine.

6. 2 Tablespoons of Fresh Garlic.

7. Salt, Black Pepper and Fresh Chopped Parsely

Place your chicken in a large pot and cover with water. Bring your pot to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Be sure that you skim off any foam that appears. Now add your carrots and onions and cook 2-3 hours adding water or chicken broth as needed. Now add your garlic, ginger, salt, pepper, and fresh parsely.

You can if you wish cook noodles in a separate pot and add them near the end of the cooking time. You may also wish to remove your chicken from the pot and debone it and remove the skin from the pot. Then return your chicken meat back to the pot. You will have one of the best chicken soups you will ever eat.

Its in the rural farming areas of India where a unique crop called horse gram is often used to control blood pressure. The part of the horse gram plant that is used is the small seeds of the horse gram plant that look like lentil seeds. The seeds have a distinctive smell like newly mowed hay. When the horse gram plants mature the plants are threshed to harvest the small seeds.

Horse Gram Soup known as Kuluth Saar in India is a very light dish that has a some what musty smell. The soup is often mixed with plain yogurt and served with Indian Yellow Rice. To prepare horse gram seeds to make the soup the seeds are soaked overnight and then the water is drained away and the seeds are placed somewhere warm where they will sprout, before they are added to water and the soup is made. Other ingredients added to the soup include kokum fruits , and lots of cleaned mashed cloves of garlic. A small amount ( 1/4 Cup to a pot of soup ) of ground pomegrante seeds are sometimes added to the soup to disolve bladder and kidney stones.

You can find horse gram seeds in most Indian Grocery Stores in larger cities in the USA and UK. But if you can't find horse gram seeds buy yourself a bag of lentils and make your soup.

While its true that tyenol or asprin can help to ease those painful arthritis flare ups why not try this tasty ginger chicken soup instead. It is the gingerol in ginger that helps with the inflammation of arthritis. It also works wonders against the virus that causes the flu.

Ginger Chicken Soup

1. Vegetable Oil.

2. 2 Tablespoons Fresh Garlic.

3. 2 Tablespoons Minced Fresh Ginger.

4. 1 Large Purple Sweet Onion Finely Diced.

5. 4 Pounds Of Raw Diced Skinless Boneless Chicken Breast.

6. 1 Cup of Fresh Spinach.

7. Fish Sauce To Taste.

8. 1 Tablespoon Cayenne Pepper.

9. 4 Large Cans Regular Chicken Broth ( Not Low Fat )

In a heavy skillet in vegetable oil sauté the ginger, garlic and onion. When done remove and set aside. In the same pan stir fry the chicken until done. Return the sauted vegetables to the pan with the chicken. Add the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer. Add more chicken broth if needed. Add spinach and stir. Just before serving add the fish sauce and the cayenne pepper.

My husband and I are very fit and health-food oriented. Post surgery, I googled "healing soup" recipes. We agree with rugs..the ginger/chicken soup used wonderfully healing ingredients and we will try it tonight!

What an interesting hub! I just thought soup was the start to a delicious meal - but obviously it can be so much more.

The Ginger Chicken Soup sure does sound good - ginger is also good for seasickness, I wonder if this would help???
