Bow's Favorite Entertainer

I posted a hub about Gilmore Girls recently, because Sword and I like to watch that show, but Bow was not pleased. He made raspberries as I played the theme song. After a brief consultation, it turned out that he did not approve my choice and that he's afraid someone might think that he, an intelligent chimpanzee, likes to watch something as low brow as that.

Bow has specifically asked me to say that Gilmore Girls is not his favorite show. For one thing, why don't they have a chimpanzee in their family? For another, he doesn't like the theme song. He thinks it's too noisy. Bow prefers classical music or folk tunes. He likes music with a clear melody and a consistent beat. No unnecessary thrumming for him.

Bow's favorite entertainer is Bavarian born flautist Bettine Clemen. She is his favorite entertainer because he likes the music she plays. It also helps that she came to play just for him at his third birthday party, and on several other occasions. Once, they even had a jam session together!

Bettine is a classically trained musician. She now travels the world, entertaining on cruise ships, but at every port of call she looks for native audiences of humans and other animals. Bettine has a special gift. She establishes instant rapport with animals, and some of her most attentive audiences have included elephants, camels, and penguins -- although obviously not all at the same time!

Bettine's autobiography is entitled: Open Your Ears to Love. She has put out a number of CDs and DVDs, including the extraordinary Love Song to a Planet. If you want to learn more about Bettine, to find out where her next public appearance is scheduled, or to get the latest information about new releases, visit her website at www.joyofmusic.com.

Bow and I highly recommend it!

I like the Gilmore Girls too, but I love (and respect!) Bow's reasons for not liking it. What a sensible sounding chimpanzee he is. And so funny that he considers it too low-brow for him. That's fair enough. I'm with him on folk music though, and Bettine is cool.

I'm just off to read your Gilmore Girls hub.

Samina, yes, I believe Bow has real musical ability, although it is hard to establish anything at this point beyond the fact that he does appreciate music and has specific musical preferences.

Thanks for stopping by! Good to hear from you.

Thanks for introducing me to someone new.  I love the picture of Bettine playing to the penguin. The penguin seems to be enjoying the music as much as Bow does.

It is interesting to learn why Bow loves that kind of music and how Bettine came to play at Bows 3rd birthday party.

Bow is adorable! Thanks for writing about his favorite entertainer!

Dottie, thanks! Yes, the penguin is really paying attention. Bettine isn't just playing in front of animals-- they listen actively! It's amazing how she engages their attention.

Vilims, thanks for your comment. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by saying Bettine looks like a snake charmer in the photo with the penguin. What does a snake charmer look like? The way I recognize one is that I see a person playing a flute to a snake. Now, maybe what you're really thinking is that the penguin, not being a mammal like us, seems like snake in comparison. Birds and reptiles sometimes get classed together, as neither group are mammals. But they are quite different from each other.

I don't know whether Bettine has ever played to snakes, but I'm sure that she doesn't have any problem with playing to reptiles as well as mammals and birds.

Maybe we should ask ourselves a different question: why exactly do snake charmers play to snakes? Do snakes like music? If they do, maybe we have underestimated their cognitive complexity.

Thanks Aya for introducing us to such an interesting artist as Bettine Clemen is. Your hubs always have me thinking back to them for days. I found Bow's reaction and intense focus on her music very amazing.
