Irrfan Khan: The Man behind The Amazing Spiderman Villain

Irrfan Khan was born Sahabzade Irrfan Ali Khan on November 30, 1962 in Jaipur, RajasthanIndia. Khan graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) inNew Delhiin 1987 and then moved to Mumbai to pursue his acting career.

Khan made steady television appearances ranging from soaps to tele-historical series until he portrayed the lead character, Lafcadia, in director Asif Kapadia’s The Warrior. In 2001 The Warrior was beloved at international film festivals which open the doors into mainstreamHollywood for Khan.

Other movies to follow which landed Khan praises for his acting: Maqbool (2003), Haasil (2003), Rog (2005), The Namesake (2006), A Mighty Heart (2007), Life in Metro (2007), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), and Billu (2009).

Khan has been awarded two Filmfare Awards (2003: best villain award - Haasil; 2007: best supporting actor - Life in Metro), an Independent Spirit Award nomination (2007: best supporting male – The Namesake), a Screen Actors Guild Award (2008: outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture - Slumdog Millionare), Stardust nomination (2008: best supporting actor award – The Namesake), IIFA Award nomination (2008: IIFA best supporting actor – Life in a Metro), and was the 2011 recipient of the Padma Shri award.

Khan has been casted as the villain Nels Van Adder (aka Proto-Goblin) in the The Amazing Spiderman (3D) set for release in 07/2012. The origin of the Prot-Goblin is that he was an Oscorp employee used as a testing subject by Norman Osborn. The serum had a negative effect and transform Van Adder into an insane, demon-like creature. Khan has also been casted as the older Pi in the Life of Pi set for release 12/2012. This move is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Yann Martel which focuses on a sea stranded boy name Pi and his magical adventures with his animal shipmates.
