Jazz and Fine Dining At The World Cafe Live
An Evening Of Pure Jazz With Point Blank Band
Night life at World Cafe Live, in Wilmington, Delaware is fervent in its attempt to become one of the area's most premier jazz clubs. It is located at 500 N. Market Street, downtown with historical elements featured throughout this amicable venue. Within the facility is a jazz club restaurant where our ears were tantalized by Point Blank, one of the best contemporary bands around. Jonathan Widran, of Wine and #Jazz Magazine commented, "Whoever said that the gospel infused urban jazz ensemble Point Blank is 'the freshest most musically exciting band to emerge from #Philadelphia in years' might have been understating things just a bit.'" Richard Blackwell of the twenty four hour live jazz broadcast, #Jazz On My Mind introduced them as "One of the badest contemporary jazz bands around." Point Blank has opened for such legends as George Duke and Jeff Lorber. They also opened for Peter White, at #Chester County Jazz Festival, which was held Friday, June 29, 2012 at Emile K. Asplundh Concert Hall, in West Chester, Pa.
Point Blank is an amazingly talented group that consist of eight high caliber musicians. Their CD entitled, A Point Of View is full of intrepid sounds of musical ingenuity. During the show they performed such hits from this masterfully arranged creation such as Along the Journey, composed by the very talented songwriter and keyboard player, Paul Lee. He explained what compelled him to write this piece by stating, "It is my musical travel of time performing with musicians and groups from the past to the present. Its an adventure of learning." Dorton Bivings, also on keyboards, escalated #Point Blank's performance with his sweltering voice by singing, In the Name of Love, written by Henry Countee. "This is a song composed to express unconditional love, which is a commandment from God," as expressed by its composer. It also exudes with the premise of powerful, syntactic love between a couple. Jerry Blake, contributes vocally as he intertwines beautifully the luxuriate sound of his sax along with Gerald Chavis' complementary voice. They flawlessly concluded this savvy song with the sound of melodious instruments and voices.
Audience members relished in the plethora of talent exhibited by Point Blank. This group maintained their sychonicity throughout the performance. Winston Ferguson, acquiesce melodiously on bass, in the background during their performance of other hits from their CD such as, The Best of Me, Selah and Aneeka also written by Countee. Steve Pratt's electrifying performance on guitar within the arrangement of such songs as Aneeka, reveals the awesome power of this talented artist. Gerald Chavis, harmonizes as a faction of support with his trumpet and in sync flugelhorn. He helped compose the heart stirring song, Only Thing, along with Brandi Chavis who said the song, "Only Thing was inspired by the understanding that the only constant is change, freeing us to live in the energy of every moment."
Lead singer Dorden, commented upon completion of this sultry song that Chavis, really did "put his thing down" on this ostensive piece. Terry Hill on drums, is the concurrent source of energy within Point Blank. The integration of his talent correlates a surge of pure joy, for a well balanced source of sound. Raleigh Lewis, plays percussions with the proficiency of a cool consumate. Behind his dark sunglasses, laid back attitude and stylish clothing is a blend of uniquely raw but pure talent. He truly does not miss a beat as the percussionist of Point Blank band.
Versatility is always demonstrated by Point Blank, as they perform such songs as On My Mind by #Kem and My Ship Has Finally Come which skillfully stirs up the women in their audience. Their arrangement of different forms of contemporary jazz, rhythm and blues and other major soulful sounds, captivates their listeners which causes them to keep returning for more. Another complement for the evening was the uniquely talented band called Infinity. Their orchestrated up tempo sounds, coincided harmoniously which created a tandem of talent for the evening.
We also indulged on a palatable source of delightful dishes at the restaurant of World Cafe Live at the Queen. The menu was entitled, "Set List/World Cafe Live." Our very attentive and courteous server was Bethany. Her vigilant knowledge of the menu helped enhance our selections which consisted of Balsamic Marinated Steak and Flatbread with roma tomatoes, baby arugula, fresh mozzarella and a TriColor Salad as appetizers. For dinner my husband ordered the WCL Burger with pepper bacon, applewood cheddar, caramelized onions, local mushrooms and smokehouse barbeque sauce on a toasted brioche. My dinner included the Crispy Skinned Salmon with caramelized yukon gold potatoe hash, shaved fennel and frisee salad tossed with a horseradish dressing served over limoncello syrup. It was delectable and appealing to our taste. We will be returning not only for the delicious food but also for the talented artist that will be appearing at this venue in the future.
Contemporary jazz bands such as Point Blank, does stir something within our emotions and deepest feelings. The magazine Awake, featured an article entitled, Music How does it affect you? expressed what a tremendous gift music is by stating, "Yes, music appeals to virtually the full range of human emotions. It soothes and excites us, uplifts and inspires us. It moves us to ecstacy and reduces us to tears. Moreover, because music speaks straight to our heart, it has power. Why are we so moved by music? The answer is really quite simple: Music is a beautiful gift from God. (James 1:17) As such, it should be treasured, it should be wholesome, and it should be available to all-young and old." What a beautiful summation for the true meaning of what music is in each of our lives.
