John Myung basses

  • Memphis Precision Bass

This is John Myung's First bass. He used it until early in Majesty period. He got it in cheap price (around $159) from his friend. The maker is in Korea (he also has a korean blood ;p ).

  • Fender Jazz Bass

He used it until early in Majesty period. It's 4 stings, ash body, and maple neck.

  • Musicman Stingray

Black, 4 strings, ash body, maple neck and fingerboard. He used it on dream theater's debut album. He modified his Stingray with adding front pickup (sent to clean bass amp as clean channel), then the original bridge pickup was sent to a full-time effected amp.

  • Spector NS-2

Used in recording of Images and word. You can see it in the Dream Theater's Japan Tour Video (The Making of Learning to Live).

  • Tobias Basic 6

He has two of this bass. Red stained and Cherry Sunburst. Six string. It has 3 control knobs (unlike current Tobias Basic). Used in Dream theater's America, Europe, and Japan tour. Can be seen on Images and words Video.

  • Tung WingBass II bolt-on

Six Stings, rare bass because only 100 was produced. He has two of it, Natural and Sunburst. Both with Rosewood fingerboard. Can be seen on John Myung Instructional Video : Progressive Bass Concept.

  • Tung WingBass  II Hybrid

Six Stings, Maple fingerboard, Half neck-through (I don't know what it's like). Can be seen on John Myung Instructional Video : Progressive Bass Concept (Tapping Lesson).

  • Yamaha TRB6

Six Strings, He has 2 of them, and one is customized. He remove all the frets, and filled with the glue.

  • Yamaha RBX6JM

It's his first signature bass. 35" scale. Used on Falling into Infinity album, Scenes from Memory.

  • Yamaha RBXJM2

With Seymour Duncan Musicman type humbucking pickup. 35" scale. And He modified on of his RBXJM2 with adding a soapbar pickup between bridge and original pickup.

  • Musicman Bongo

He Used the 5 string Bongo HH on recording Systematic chaos (can be seen on recording of Dark Eternal Night). Then, he switched to the 6 string version which is first time Musicman made Bongo 6 (or first time Musicman made 6 string bass?). Sterling Ball said that it wasn't a signature bass, but several years ago he stated that there was no chance for six string bongo unless a high profile artist asked for one. Now, John Myung use his Musicman Bongo 6 for tour and also for dream theater's new album, Black Cloud and Silver Linings.
