Pctures from an e-mail I received
What is a pencil?
I have used pencils from childhood till now and just took them for granted.
Searching for some information to type this hub I found out a lot of interesting
data, and so as to be able to produce this without getting in trouble I thought I would
refresh minds or even teach something.
Seems orginally the "lead pencil" was invented in England some years ago, like in
the 1560's and actually there is no lead in them it is graphite and they were also
square in the beginning till they figured out a round pencil was easier to sharpen
as well as produce.
In America we use a tree called the Incense cedar tree. as far as wood goes it is
softer then most. easy to form into a pencil, doesn't splinter and sharpens easier
This tree grows from near the Columbia River in Oregon south to northern Baja
California in Mexico and then east to western Nevada, so I read. They grow to 150
feet tall and also contain a substance that retards decay and moths, hence the
cedar chest came about. Mine still has some of my children's baby clothes in
it...why? They were once so small...I Love them.
Anyways back to Pencils...these photos are amazing, as so many other artist's I have
come across...remember the one about the dirty back windows in the car, and the
beautiful drawings the man did on them...
Well this was at the end of the e-mail and I just wanted to share it, I think it is very
A PENCIL MAKER TOLD THE PENCIL 5 IMPORTANT LESSONS JUST BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE BOX :
1.) EVERYTHING YOU DO WILL ALWAYS LEAVE A MARK.
2.) YOU CAN ALWAYS CORRECT THE MISTAKES YOU MAKE.
3.) WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS WHAT IS INSIDE OF YOU.
4.) IN LIFE, YOU WILL UNDERGO PAINFUL SHARPENINGS,
WHICH WILL ONLY MAKE YOU BETTER.
5.) TO BE THE BEST PENCIL, YOU MUST ALLOW YOURSELF
TO BE HELD AND GUIDED BY THE HAND THAT HOLDS YOU.
