Let's Get Sirius!

SiriusXM Satellite Radio

Sirius and XM merged and are now one and the same Satellite Radio. Sirius features commercial free music where ever you go, brought straight to you via satellite signal. Pure, clean radio and then - Howard Stern!

Howard Stern, radio shock jock, has been on the air since before 1986. He had the most popular syndicated radio show from 1986 - 2005. Stern followed in his father's footsteps and says he knew he wanted to be in radio since he was 5 years old.

Stern's presence is very well known on and off the air. Recently, he appeared as a guest on the David Letterman show, he joked about getting fired for airing a skit that back fired. Stern has admitted to being fined at least a couple of times through out his career.

I love the Howard Stern show, I like the joking around and the outrageous humor with Stern and his crew, Robin (my favorite) Fred, Benjy and Gary. Robins laughter just makes me laugh!

My husband drives a lot through the day, from court house to court house research room so I knew I was onto a great idea when I bought him a Sirius Radio. Sirius should be the first prescripted radio station! I know if the doctor knew how much it calms my husband down when he drives - he would prescribe it.

I bought the radio and I wrapped it up. It has to be installed and I know better than to go touching my husbands truck! I don't know if all men are having love affairs with their trucks but my husband does, and I just keep my hands off the other lady in his life.

The day of his birthday, February 7, arrived and he opened his gift and was quite surprised I had thought of it. Dave had heard about this Satellite Radio and was already interested in picking one up for himself. He followed the easy intall instructions and he opened his account online. The subscription is 12.00 per month. To us, that is a small price to pay for lots of entertainment. Dave can listen to the radio while he drives or listen while he works, utilizing his account online through his computer.

Satellite has over 140 stations, such as, Martha Stewart, Howard Stern at Howard100, E Street Band with Bruce Springstein, NFL Radio, News and Traffic, Comedy, Oprah, Tom Petty, you name it. It looks to me like everyone is joining the satellite wave.

I also noted that new cars are being rolled out with Sirius already installed. This tells me that it will be the radio of the future. When my birthday rolled around two years ago and my husband asked me what I wanted for my gift, being a practical girl I said, "let's get Sirius!" He said, "I am! Now, what do you want for your gift?" I said, "No! I mean lets get S-I-R-I-U-S"!

SIRI

Sirius was trading on the NASDAQ for .67 cents per share. I don't believe in gambling away money I do not have, but I do not mind the entertainment value and I do play around enough to earn a buck or two.

When the stock market bottomed out - I went around purchasing stocks that I personally liked. I am not a stock broker - but I did work for one for a couple of years. I learned that the stock market is totally unpredictable. It is really all smoke and mirrors. Sure, people can give you all their estimates and educated guesses but, only the shadow knows! Trading Stock is not for the faint of heart. (Just ask Martha Stewart!)

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Here we are, a few birthdays and valentines day's later and I am still holding that stock close to my heart. The market closed today and it was trading for $2.14 cents per share. That 1000 shares is now more than double it's worth than when I purchased it which makes my unrealized gain more than 100 percent.

Thanks for the Birthday Day Gift David...and Happy Birthday! I know you are still enjoying your SIRIUS radio - seriously!

Get SIRIUS - I am betting it is going to be a big winner too!

I finally got to hear Sirius and I can see why people enjoy it. Especially since there are no commercials whatsoever and the music stations play more than just the standard issue big hits. Interesting and useful information!

Okay now I feel left out since I wont be able to listen to Sirius! Congrats on your stocks making you some money!

Hi Alecia! Thank you! I do love it - and how the radio displays the song and author too:) I thought the cost at first was not worth it - but since he uses it at his desk also we do get our money's worth! I think the stock is still really cheap for it too!

Hi Cardisa - Do you not get it there? Wow! I hope you eventually can:). Thanks too - I hope the shares continue to grow - I also bought some Liz Claiborne - but when it doubled I cashed out and took a trip! LOL. I knew I had better get while the getting was good!

Aaw Dave hahah I love Howard Stern and I love Sirius radio - I really do. My husband has it in his car (courtesy of the company he works for) and my mom has it in her car. I dont have it :( But I really really want it! My anniversary is coming up...I wonder if I print out your Hub and leave it laying ALL over the house...maybe he will get the hint!

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author

Hi Ardie! I do too...Howard is just funny! I see him as a person who just ignores the old brain filter and says what is on his mind. I think, he says what a lot of people are already thinking but would never say in public!!! We all have some similar funny thoughts so the connection is there - to know him is to love him! haha!

I hope you do get one - I listen on the computer while I work too so it is not so bad for the price. I think you should ask for the stock -- that will pay ya back, or well I am betting on it:) lol

Hey RealHousewife, I don't presently own a car and if I did, I would prefer commercial free radio to what is already on air with normal radios. It's awesome that you bought stock in them when you had the opportunity and I think it's awesome that your return on investment has been really great. I've seen some videos of Howard Stern's radio show and he is definitely a personality to be reckoned with without a doubt. LOL! :) Great Hub! Voted up, awesome, beautiful and interesting. :)

Hey Cagsil! Wow! Thank you so much! I think Howard is hilarious! But talk about immoral! lol lol

I still think that the stock is super cheap! I really think, especially because Howard just resigned his contract with Sirius and he signed to be a Judge on America's got talent...I bet that stock goes up. It has rallied around 2 bucks for a while now.

Thanks again - I appreciate your votes and support!!

Hi Drbj - this year I got a brand new HP Pavillion 7! Lol. He gave it to me early and warned me not to expect much on Valentines:) but I am sure you will agree it is worth that little sacrifice:) I am always amazed at what a good present picker he is!

Thank you so much for your visit!

When I bought my car 3 years ago it came with a month of free satellite radio. I did like the stations available, but that truly annoying feature of losing the satellite feed while stuck under an overpass irritated me so bad that I did not continue the subscription. Not being able to hear the punch lines or the end of a song was really irritating. So I dropped it.

I hope Dave doesn't have to drive under overpasses all the time like I do.

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author

Hey Austin -- no he never complains about it? I guess when I am thinking about it - where he mainly drives there are almost zero overpasses out this way. He does have an issue in one section of back road territory he covers. It stops working for a few seconds. He loves Howard Stern too and he enjoys listening to all the interviews he does. Sometimes I will see him pull in the driveway and I notice he is in his truck for several minutes. I will say what were you doing? Most of the time he is sitting there still so he can finish listening to whatever program was on:) lol

I am going to ask if he ever noticed this though I am curious. I don't use it in my car because I do not drive much at all. I think I put 30,000 miles on my last car in 5 years!

Dear RealHousewife, I saw that Dave Letterman session with Howard Stern, too. I don't think anyone knows the real Howard, as I think he's smart "like a fox" and his verbiage is concocted to make him wealthy. Whether people love him or hate him, everyone knows of him. Agree or disagree, his controversial persona is always talked about.

Congrats, Real, on your stock market success, at a time where many long-time investors are floundering. I knew you were one smart foxy lady!

Great, Kelly did not know about this radio station until now. Thanks for sharing the information.

I liked how you described David's second love...his truck..lol

my better half's love is his computer and I dare not mess with her...lol

I am proud how you have gained by investing in this stock...way to go WOMAN! Proud of ya!

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author

Hi Amy! Thank you! I started out by reading the Suzy Orman book for woman and investing:) lol At that time, if you bought her book TD Ameritrade was offering an incentive for ladies to learn to invest their dollars. If you opened an account and deposited 50 dollars a month for one year they GAVE you 100 dollars! I couldn't resist that...so after year one...I took my 700 dollars and I bought what looked like junk (penny stocks) I doubled them and when they reached double I took my money out like everyone would probably say not to! I got a nice little nest egg:) I asked Dave for the sirius at that time...I did add those funds which I am still holding out because I see a winner there, but all the other money was just fun money. I went on a trip...and I bought Dave and iPad and he was so shocked and could not figure out how I had gotten that much money without him noticing it:))) planned ahead!

I agree too about Howard Stern and sometimes shock jocks say things and they sound plastic and planned, and you can tell it was done not because they believe it but because they were looking for ratings. Howard I think really believes all the stuff he spews! haha! It makes him so likable but I think people like to pretend they hate him!!

Thanks Ruchira:) The power of a woman huh???? I am telling you, I was able to surpise my husband with this one! When I told him I was going to refresh my investment skills and play with stock I heard a groan:) I did say though, I am just going to play around with a little bit of money and started my trade account with a 50 dollar month deposit. Almost every financial adviser will say "invest in what you like" so I picked local stocks and diversified! haha! Score!!

Good point...Dave's computer is another love and I don't mess around that much either. He wouldn't like it! lol

We are big Howard fans in this house and own Private Parts. Stern is definitely one smart cookie, and so are you for buying those stocks. Al used to have Sirius in his truck, but when the economy started to get bad we didn't renew the subscription. It is on the list though to pick up again when things start to pick up again. I can't recall how much the subscription was here but I know for sure it was higher than what you guys pay. Sometimes it sucks to be a Canadian :)

Great hub! I have always had Sirius long before the merger and in fact have been a faithful listener to Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge. I used to work for a drving company that started at 3am until 3pm Mon-Sat and if it wasn't for my Sirius radio, it would have been a long boring drive everyday with just terestrial radio as Howard likes to say. thanks

Hey RH, it came with my Accord and I've gladly paid the yearly fee--you save a lot that way. I wish it would have a big display showing all the channels and featured programs so I could keep hitting the remote while I'm driving like I do at home. On second thought, maybe I'll just stick to the audiobooks, music, Car Talk etc I listen to now.

I also wish they would offer Pandora as a channel, but I may have to plug in my Droid for that.

You may have a knack for this stock thing, time to write a hub on the RH Orman guide to savvy investing. =:)

p.s. Happy Birthday Dave!

This is the way his truck acts now with his new gift:

Once upon a time there was Sirius, and once upon a time, there was XM. I liked Sirius better, then they merged. Oh well. I don't really listen to the radio all that much, anyway. Our PT came with it already subscribed, and somehow, it still works 5 years later, yet we've never signed up for any renewals. ... Apparently, since it's an over-the-air broadcast signal, the scrambler is inside the radio, and once it's been unlocked, there is no way to re-lock it remotely, unlike the cable feeding your TV, which can be locked off at the utility pole....just my guess.

Hi Susan - I am so not surprised you guys are Howard and Sirius fans! Dave was really mad his subscription wasn't working last night:) lol I am sure he got it fixed because I haven't heard anything more about it! lol I hope you get to pick it back up soon! For many reasons:) Thank you so much!!

RealHousewife profile image

Hi KDF - thank you! I had it long before the merger too but I am glad they merged. If you have to be in the car driving for long periods of time I am sure it is a life saver! I know my husband really likes being able to choose talk or music and have no commercials.

RealHousewife profile image

Hi Winsome! I think they are in just about every car now you can imagine! I really think that it will be the way to go...the government can take back all the radio waves and go back to brain washing people! LOL LOL I do love the idea of Pandora as a channel - hey maybe we will see it:) I got a little lucky - I did follow the no brainer advice - like I wouldn't buy stock in a product I didn't like:) lol I knew the economy was killing the market so I thought about what products would still sell in a down economy. Liz - the ladies are gonna buy, buy, buy their favorite clothes no matter what! Zolteck - I bought a bunch of that....they manufacture rubber and tires and junk....I figured that was good and safe too especially since they opened a plant over there in Mexico:) Kinda fun! But I would not be sleeping if I had everything I owned rolled into that stock market at all!

Thanks for the link - gonna check it out:)

Hey Wayne! I was just thinking about you! I will be in your parts in a couple of weeks - fair warning now:) lol lol

Thanks - don't you think Sirius is here to stay? I just don't see it going backward...I think it is a winner! Thanks so much! Good to see you!!

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author

Hey DzyMsLizzy - you are not the first person who has said that! I have had a few other people say it came in their car and it just never stopped working and it is a few years later! I hope to see it somehow become free. I have heard lots of musicians who are complaining now due to the way that they are paid (or not paid may be more correct)! With everyone able to just copy music - I am sure sales are showing those changes. I wondered why some of them are buying their own stations and how they profit from that?

I think that is a pretty good guess too...I bet the technology in the beginning may not have accounted for those kinds of things.

Your title hooked me in though I had no idea what Sirius was, since we don’t get it in the UK (as far as I know). It sounds great though and your hub certainly was since I carried on reading even after I knew it was a radio station I can’t listen to!

RealHousewife profile image

Gi Alastar! Thanks! I think Dvaes looks at me as one of those double sided coins that is a blessing and a curse:) haha! I haven't heard Stern was making another movie but I'd watch it if he did:) lol. And hey - maybe it would help my stock go up!

RealHousewife profile image

Hi Melovy - ohhhh I didn't know you guys didn't have access for sure. Well that is a raw deal! I'm gonna give Howard a call and see if he can hook you up! Lol lol

Hi Phoebe - wow! Thank you feor telling me too! I had no idea how many people hadn't heard about it. I didn't know it wasn't available in the UK either! It should be! Lol. It is a fabulous invention - I love no commercial radio. I am a huge music fan too though so I do think it's worth the price - i bet now your going to notice people talking about it. Funny how that works:).

I never really was interested in Sirius. My mom and dad had a free version for 1 month in their new car and the songs were good and it was nice to pick exactly what you wanted without the commercials, but idk... something about it just never caught my attention. I liked reading how you felt about it though! Maybe someday I will be able to afford it and then I will pay closer attention. Great hub!

RealHousewife profile image

RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author

Hey Myth - well thank you - I like knowing everyone's opinion not just people who agree:) lol That is nice too but yeah I think not all people care as much about some of those additional things we CAN have. For Dave and I we work at our desks all day (or he is driving) he can listen to his Sirius through his iPhone at the court houses too - so it is more important to us. You know working at a desk is so boring and the entertainment REALLY helps us tolerate long hours at the desk. If I didn't have something to listen to I would quit! haha!

Hey so sorry Finance Hub - I just now discovered this and many other comments in my SPAM folder? I apologize for the delay in my response!

Thanks - and hey - that serious stock is doing great still! Lots of good things happening for them....I am keeping my shares for quite a while longer I think!

Thanks again!
