Linkin Park - One of Today's Best Rock Bands

Linkin Park in Cape Town

In November 2012 after waiting 10 years for them to come to South Africa, they finally made it!

Here's my Linkin Park experience.

When most people hear about Linkin Park, I'm sure some of the first things that come to mind are the tattoos, the piercings, the purple and orange hair and Chester screaming his lungs out on stage. These are just a few parts of what make up this phenomenal rock band - one of the greatest bands in music history.

I was first introduced to them back in 2001. I was in my final year of high school, going through a lot - everything you'd expect a normal 18-year old girl to be going through, and this band provided me with solace through many of those rather interesting days.

There's nothing quite like turning on Linkin Park at full volume. Somehow, after blasting out a couple of their songs, everything seemed much better. Don't get me wrong - I appreciate good music, loud music - just so long as it has words that actually mean something, and the band members can sing and not just scream for the sake of screaming.

Linkin Park has transformed the way people look at rock music in general. What they've brought to the music industry over the past decade and more, is artistic brilliance to say the least.

Not only are they able to belt out the high notes as they do in Crawling, but they're able to get down and emotional and show off their softer vocals in songs like My December.

If you've never heard their music, I'd like to introduce them to you with the following song below: New Divide, taken off the soundtrack from The Transformers.

Who Are Linkin Park?

Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills in California. They were formed in 1996, but the band officially rose to International fame after the success and fame of their first album, Hybrid Theory.

What I love about this band is the fact that they are so talented - they don't feel the need to scream every single song out to call themselves a rock band. Listen to their music, listen to at least 10 of their songs from different albums and you will find that their music and singing ability spans a wide range of vocal capabilities.

One of my favourite and one of their first songs I heard play on the radio was "Crawling". It's filled with such emotion, it's loud and it's raw. A total opposite to one of their more recent and mellower songs played over the years, "My December".

These two songs alone demonstrate why Linkin Park is one of the world's greatest bands in music history.

A legend lives long after they die, like Beethoven, Bach, Beatles. This band is in no way near that caliber. Good, yes. But, their music will not be remembered 50 years from now.

@perrya - You've raised a good point there. I certainly wasn't putting them in the same category as Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston - but in my eyes, right now they are a music legend. They've definitely changed the way I think about rock music. I'll sleep on your words, maybe change the title tomorrow - but each to their own opinion. Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it!

Well, I have actually heard of this group, but you have to remember that I actually saw The Beatles in concert. Hey, it's your hub and if you want to call them legends then that is your right. I have never understood why Hubbers feel they need to use the comment section to argue about a hub. Forums are a perfect place for that. I respect you and you did a fine job of reviewing this group. Well done!

perrya profile image

perrya 4 years ago

Well, its just a misuse of a word and its meaning. But, let's be rational. If you think they are legends great, but use a more correct word, like fantastic. Legends are iconic, stand the test of time whether were talking movie stars, movies, or plays or cars. Why did MJ buy the rights to the Beatle songs? He viewed them as legends. Madonna is a legend, MJ is a legend, Lady Gaga could be a legend. Frank Sinatra and Elvis are legends. How do you think Apple got its name? Steve jobs loved the Beatles and ripped them off. The Beatles were the first with Apple records. They were court many years. Anyway, hubpages are forums.

@perrya - You make an excellent case and I appreciate you taking the time to point this out to me. I'm certainly not here to argue a point (I'd rather do this in forums, but since you've commented on my hub I feel it necessary to respond), or any way offend you or anyone else with my use of the term 'legend'. I have slept on it, and have decided on another title name for this hub, I think it will bring in a lot more traffic and it's better suited to the message I'm trying to bring across. So, thank you for giving me the opportunity to improve this hub, as well as my writing ability. After all, isn't HubPages supposed to be a community of people who have a passion for writing, who want to learn and grow, who accept positive and negative criticism and who want to interact on a professional and friendly level with other writers? Maybe I'm wrong, but that was my impression of this network. Nevertheless, as I said - I really appreciate your feedback, one can only learn and grow, so thank you!

@billybuc - You've actually made my day with your kind words, thank you so much :) In my eyes, they are legends of today - but, having said that I will agree on the point that was raised and I've gone ahead to change the title to something that I think will be of the benefit of this hub, not of anyone else. I'm glad you enjoyed reading about Linkin Park, they're quite different to that of the Beatles! Thanks for your feedback, it's appreciated! :)

Please take no offense, I like them too. Sometimes, the written word is misread and tone is implied. If I was too strong, sorry. But if millions of readers read HP, being accurate is important and it is OK to disagree, its your blog.

perrya, you can't say Lady Gaga is going to be a legend. She is just famous for the things she does like her meat suit for example, her coming out of an egg, etc. Her music is average.

You can't compare her to the likes of the Beetle, Frank or Elvis ;) But hey, that's just my opinion!

perrya profile image

perrya 4 years ago

Well, Gaga and Perry, like David Bowie, could be legends for the way they dressed. Their music is nothing special, but how they dress, Like Elton John, makes them stand out, is IS their logo.

MelChi profile image

MelChi 4 years ago from Cape Town, South Africa Author

@perrya & @gchisnall - Great points, but I think it's fair to say after all the debate that everyone has their own opinions on what a legend is. Maybe we should open a forum thread instead to continue this topic if you feel the need to carry on with the debate? Thanks for your feedback, I really do appreciate it!

Noooo! Not one of today's best rock bands! Unless you think Green Day and Weezer are some of today's best rock bands- that would mean we have a different notion of what rock music is. If we lump all the same bands in the rock category, then I must make a response article to set the record straight- they are emo alternative rock, and are as much rock n roll as Hanson was. Good day, ma'am. Btw, good article, but I disagree strongly, if you couldn't tell.

Wow, I remember when Linkin Park first came on the scene, and everyone talked about them at school. I liked 'In the End' its the one song that still comes to mind now. To be honest, I haven't really kept up to speed with the rock music scene since I turned 20. Are the Offspring and Sum 41 still around? They were awesome.

Hi WhydThatHappen, wow - this article certainly is bringing out a lot of debate! I need to set the record straight, I didn't come up with referring to Linkin Park as a rock band on my own - this was pulled off two different websites I used while doing my research. Funny you should mention this, as my friend also didn't agree on labeling them as a "rock" band. So, what genre would you classify them as then? Some other websites say rock/rap and some say nu metal. I guess it's a matter of opinion. Keep in mind that there are lots of different types of rock music, not just one. They are however certainly NOT on the same level as Hanson - that much I completely disagree with you about. That's like comparing Linkin Park to Backstreet Boys - it's not the same. Maybe a few similarities to Green Day with some of their slower songs, but no - they're also not the same as that band either. Green Day is punk rock band. Something Linkin Park is NOT. Thanks for reading and for sharing your opinion. Each to their own, I think. Let's agree to disagree on this one, but I do appreciate where you're coming from and you raised some good points. Perhaps this would make a good topic for you to write on. Thanks for the comment :)

Hi JKenny - they were also "the" band when we were in high school. My husband is also a huge fan, so I've been able to keep up to date with what they've been up to and listen to their latest singles and albums. I wasn't a huge Sum 41 fan, so not sure what they've been up to, but as far as I know the Offspring have (or are about to) bring out their latest album. Looking forward to seeing if they've mixed things up, or if it's the same as what they did years ago. Thanks for your comments!

Ah, I agree to disagree, but to clarify, I meant they were as much Rock n Roll as Hanson was, as in only slightly rock n' roll, not that Hanson is the same kind of rock as Linkin Park. When I read what I wrote I can see how it sounds like that.

They are an alternative, emo rock band. Alternative rock bands rely more on stylistic and emotional niches within rock n roll than on song structure. (someone correct me if that seems inaccurate). Green day is an alternative, punk rock band. Weezer is an alternative, pop rock band. Red hot chili peppers are an alternative, funk rock band. Muse are alternative rock superstars of some kind.

Foo fighters are more what I would call rock. Them Crooked Vultures are rock. The raconteurs are rock. The dead weather are rock. janes addiction are rock. Led zeppelin and the rolling stones are pretty much the stylistic standard against which I hold all other bands claiming to be rock.

I hope that explains what I meant better.

Hi MelChi,

Wonderful hub. Can't tell you how many times I have heard "In the end" because of my teenage daughter who is a crazy fan of this talented band. I am generally not familiar with English songs, but this band I am so familiar with because my daughter would ask me to listen to their songs and I used to enjoy listening to them too. But the facts that you have given are new to me and I got to know a lot about them and am sending my daughter the link to this hub.

Well done. Sharing and tweeting. Cheers, Rema.

linkin park is probably one of the few bands i like these days. and, in my personal opinion...if lady gaga could be a legend, well, these guys are just as good or better than she is in my personal opinion, so i can't see why they would not alos be a legend. there are millions of people in this world, and music for all. the beatles would not be legend but for the huge fan base they have who love that style of music. believe it or not there are people out there who think the beatles suck. what determines whether a band becomes legend is the mark they make in music, how distinctive it is and their ability to sing songs (or make music) that can be enjoyed by multiple generations (age groups). for all his haters out there, justin bieber has a fan base not just of teen age girls, but of little toddlers and adults and seniors all. im not saying he will be legend...but he has a style enjoyed by many of all ages. no one will know if linkin park will become legend until they are long gone...but they have as good a shot at it as any other great band...and they are a great band. you did an excellent job on this hub and i enjoyed it very much...voted up and shared.

Been a fan of theirs since they first came out. I think Lit came out about the same time, with one of their first hits. Believe it or not, I do have all of their albums. Didn't care much for their joint effort with Jay-Z, but that's another story. lol Great Hub!

Hi Vinaya - Thank you! Glad to meet a fellow Linkin Park fan. It's amazing how wide their reach is with their music in terms of the various people who listen to it. Young, old - people who like loud and fast music, people who like slow music. They are brilliant. Thanks for reading!

MelChi profile image

Tlmcgaa70 - you summed that up perfectly, thank you! I completely agree with you about what it means for a music icon to be declared a legend. The fact that Linkin Park have been making music for well over a decade and that their music has reached across to people from all over the world of all ages, all races, and personalities - well, that for me is a music legend. And yes, I'm sure one day when the band is no longer...only then, will some people declare them a legend. But, what's wrong with right now? Thanks for your comment - much appreciated! :)

Richard, it continues to amaze me over just how many fans Linkin Park have! I have to say up front that I was brought up with Dion & the Belmonts, the Platters, Buddy Holley, Elvis, etc., but I like rock from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. In my (admittedly not so humble) opinion, rock n' roll died around 1990. If I had to pick three GREAT rock groups I would pick Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the Rolling Stones, and the Beatles. Expand that to five and I would add AC/DC and Blue Oyster Cult. Eclectic tastes, right? The music of the 90s and later just seem to me to be little more than screaming over endlessly repeated, non-melodic guitar riffs. Reminds me of what happened to classical music in the mid-twentieth century when atonality and serial music became all the rage and sounded like little more than mathematical assemblage of notes without "saying" anything. I know many won't agree with me but that's my opinion for what it's worth. One more thing: "rap" (or "hip-hop") is NOT music.

MelChi profile image

MelChi 2 years ago from Cape Town, South Africa Author

Hi Alex, I can't really comment here because I'm a kid of the 90s, so I guess I grew up to the likes of Bon Jovi as far as rock is concerned. I do agree that Linkin Park isn't specifically a full on rock band as such, but they definitely have some rock influence in the majority of their songs. Anyway, we can agree to disagree. Thanks for stopping by to comment :)
