Digital Underground

Digital Underground were on the most pioneering rap groups that although never received lots of commercial recognition, where hugely respected and influencing on so many rap artists it would be difficult to name them all. Digital Underground where a rolling music group, with many of their members coming and going, although the lead of the band Shock G, who was behind the Humpty Hump Alter ego, remained. At the time Digital Underground hit the hip hop scene, there was something very pioneering about them. They looked at electronics and computers as the future, and this become part of their act. They where actually hugely influenced by Parliament funkadelic and George Clinton, making them their most sampled influences. Tupac even toured with them and rapped on a number of tracks.

Eazy E

Eric "eazy e" Wright was known for putting Compton on the map. The original founder of NWA, and known as one of the realest gangsters in the rap industry. He founded ruthless records, using money built up from drug dealing, and gang banging. With his slightly high sounding rapping voice, he was hugely recognizable, and very popular. He was known to really live the life of a high roller, and his street smart lyrics reflected this. He released albums with NWA, and also went on to have a hugely successful solo artists career. Eazy E died from aids.

Gangstarr

Gangstarr is a massively respcted double team of both GURU, and Dj Premier. Guru found that the word gang starr, and the symbolic nature of the chain and the starr was more what they where about. There first album achieved good success with their style being defined as late 80's, with a wide variety of instrumental jazz styles from dj premier, and the instantly recognizable monotone voice of guru, they are a great group to listen to. Gurus lyrics are always on point, and although guru has now died, there is plenty of him still rapping as tight as ever on gangstarr albums.

Ice-T

Ice-T. Many people hold the title of godfather of rap, however, there is only one godfather pimp of the rap game, and that is Ice-t. Quoted by every major rap artist as one of their main influences, Ice broke on the scene before NWA, with his tough gangster style and killer lyrics. Guns, money, hustling.and women the main subject matter, yet ice-t managed to carve out a huge amount of controversy with many white middle american parents up in arms at this bad influence on their angelic children. He was considered for a while a slight cross over, with his heavy metal band body count, but really it was ice pioneering a new hardcore style that many rappers today have jumped on like car bandwagon jackers. Ice-t has managed to maintain a real hardcore persona, with many film appearances that compliment his rap styles, and to prove he was the biggest pimp in the game, he married coco, the woman with the amazing booty. Bow down to the Ice.

Ice cube

Ice cube is one of the giants of the rap game. His rap CV includes leaving NWA to start his solo career at the height of NWA popularity. A move that would be criticized to totally backfire on him. Instead Ice Cube came out on top. AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was ice cubes first solo album, and it was considered an instant classic. The thing that really propelled Ice cube to the mainstream was his role as doughboy in the hit film Boyz in the Hood. He also had a couple of tracks on the soundtrack, including the main theme. From all the rappers in the game, it has to be Ice cube that has managed to carve the best career in Hollywood. Although a couple of goofs, most of the films have been popular, and Ice cube has managed to be respected, even among single parents. His career and almost his life took a slight dive when he stole the track hook for his comedy movie Friday. He stole it from cypress hill, who went ballistic, and even the nation of Islam had to step in to ask them to settle things. Finally they did, and the world was once again at peace.

public enemy rap music mp3 downloads

Public Enemy

Public Enemy where the original rebels without a pause. With their tough talking political rhetoric, and they're highly crafted and explosive beats by the bomb squad, Public Enemy can easily be considered one of the most successful rap super-groups of all time. There was always 2 parts to public enemy. The highly serious chuck-d, who was the main lyrical mc, and the flamboyant flavour flav. Both artists so different, yet both an unbelievable stage & musical force. Along with a DJ called terminator X, and the SW1, a near militant group of dancers, they certainly choose the perfect name for a rap group.

redman mp3 music downloads

Redman

Redman has to be described as one of the realist mc's in the hip hop game. With a huge range of albums tracks and collaborations with some of the worlds most popular artists outside the hip hip game, its almost like redman is hip hop personified. Redman still smokes blunts, still lives in the hood, and still keeps making some of the illist tracks for any fans of rap. He was originally associated, and worked extensively with Eric Sermen, from EPMD. Redman has been signed to defjam records, and enjoys film cameo's as well as his double team act with method man in the film how high.

Shyne

Shyne was known as the prodigy of Puffy Combs on the badboy label, just as it was really hitting the mainstream. Shyne's hardcore lyrics, mostly inspired and influenced from sean combs himself, help paint the image, and influence, of a hardcore gangster style, along with shynes low bouncy notorious big style tone of his voice.

The image of shyne as a badboy served him badly when his involvement in a nightclub shooting resulted in him spending 10 years incarcerated, where he was then deported home to Belize. He has since put badboy, and combs well behind him, as he carves out another career in a different music genre and style.

Glad I read this Hub. I don't know half of them.

Thanks for updating me. :)

I noticed there are no groups that represented a pro-black agenda on this list.

No PE,PRT,YZ,X-Clan, whoever put this list together is bias.

there was an old late 80's rap group or early 90's with song called strange and song called the juggaknots,..the song strange had the back ground music to cameo's song strange

Glad that you mixed the Christian Rap into your list. Not many people are cool enough to do that. Kudos.

why are the only options GANGSTER, PRANKSTER OR NEVER HEARD OF THEM? Why does it have to be such extremes?????

i view some of these as artist, neither gangsters or pranksters...why r u feeding into the stereotype of what rap is not about?

you must of not heard a lot of rap artist in the past cause many are no your list and you must not know that KID ROCK is Hip-Hop from the very start of his career that people think his first song is BAWIDABAW which is not since he was already an artist since the early 90ies and never was credited as a great rapper but he never stopped what he love to do and kept going until everybody noticed him.....

Jered Ashto 2 years ago
