Luigi Legnani's 36 Caprices for Classical Guitar Opus 20 - Free Videos and Sheet Music

Introduction

Luigi Legnani (1790-1877) is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Unfortunately, he is little known outside of the classical guitar community. This hub will focus on one of his greatest works, 36 Caprices, Op. 20. These caprices are true virtuoso pieces, and really show what is possible with the instrument. Legnani was a contemporary of Paganini, the great violin virtuoso. These caprices seem closely related to Paganini's caprices: they cover all major and minor keys, and are often "fast and furious". Here is a recording of Pavel Steidel playing Caprice 36

Very cool! I wonder how the Caprices sound different when played on modern guitars versus guitars of the period.

Ari Lamstein: It always helps to hear a musical masterpiece played by a musical master. All of the video examples are beautiful, particularly the performance of number 7.

Thank you, voted up, etc.,
