The decision that I had to make was would I work or play.

The surf-report said the waves were fine with a big swell rolling in,

So I grabbed my board and spun my wheels and headed for a swim.

My actions all came easy, there was no sense of remorse,

But when I showed for work next day – I got the sack, of course.

I thought I’d seek employment on this particular day,

My jeans were frayed and ragged, I was desperate for some pay.

So I bought the morning paper and checked the classifieds,

But when I saw the jobs on offer, man! I nearly died.

They wanted uni graduates with accountancy and law,

But there were no jobs for surfies – I found it all a bore.

So I headed for the countryside to pick some hops or fruit,

The ad said “casual help wanted,” the job, it looked real beaut.

With my insides torn with hunger, I climbed aboard a train,

But when I got down to that farm, the crop had been ruined by rain.

My home became a caravan, and sometimes just a tent,

And with what I earned out in the bush I couldn’t pay the rent.

Then I thought I’d join the army, but this dream soon turned sour,

They told me how the bugle would sound at some ungodly hour.

The navy? It seemed just as bad, and the airforce lousy, too.
