Magical Doremi (Ojamajo Doremi) - A Popular Anime for Girls

Magical Doremi is the English name for an anime television series in the magical girl genre.  The original series ran in Japan from February 1999 until January 2000 and consisted of 51 episodes.  Magical Doremi was produced by Junichi Sato and Takuya Igarashi for Toei Animation.  This series was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment giving it exposure around the world.  The English dub of Magical Doremi had a few small changes, but basically tells the same story as the Japanese version.

Quick Fact: In Japan Magical Doremi was known as Ojamajo Doremi, and when the series name is written out on the DVD’s it is usually stylized as Magical DoReMi.

After the success that the first season of Magical Doremi experienced, the producers have since released three more series or seasons featuring the characters and two movies.  The later seasons were called Ojamajo Doremi #, Mōtto! Ojamajo Doremi, and Ojamajo Doremi Dokkān! respectively.

The only version of Magical Doremi that has been released officially in the United States was the first series.  Other versions have been shown around the world with subtitles.

Characters and Plot

Magical Doremi focuses on three girls, Dorie, Reanne and Mirabelle (who were known as Doremi, Hazuki and Aiko in the original Japanese version.)  These characters are well loved by fans of the show.

The girls become involved in many adventures after they become witches in training.  The first episode of Magical Doremi explains the back story of how the girls get involved with a witch, Patina, and become training as witchlings.

Throughout the series, the Magical Doremi girls meet many new friends and foes and become better friends as they become skilled in the arts of being a witch.  Their main foe is an evil witch who is known as the Queen of the Witch World.

Availability of the Series

Magical Doremi is not very well known in the United States, as the show was only shown on 4Kids, a station that is not available in every market.  However, the show was extremely popular among girls in Japan and around the world.   Because of the popularity throughout the world, there is a variety of licensed merchandise available with the Magical Doremi characters on them.

There has been some talk of dubbing the later series and movies (which are actually 30 minute super-episodes) that were not brought to the United States, however as of February 2011, this has not happened.  Season 2 of Magical Doremi can be found in Japanese with subtitles however if you search some of the major anime import websites.

The first series of Magical Doremi is widely available for viewing online as 4Kids posted them on their website.  This has given the series a second life and has helped the show become better known in the United States.  The ongoing popularity of the show has spawned online Magical Doremi games and other websites devoted to the anime.
