Marilyn Manson and the Art of Censorhip and Explicit Lyrics by Interscope

This is an interesting example of how modern music censorship of explicit lyrics not only is not effective, but in this case actually works against its own purposes when words and intelligent artistry are at play in the music.

The song is Marilyn Manson's

...This is the New Sh*t...

(Sh*t is prounouced the same as
Skit or Spit, so you all know what
the word actually is for reference.)

The lyrics we are concerned with happen in the title track chorus which happens twice in the song's length. Here is how the original song chorus goes with edited asterisks in place for Hub Pages and Google terms of service appropriate use of grammar and non-vulgar word usage.

Original Version of chorus:

Are you mother f**kers ready
For the new sh*t?
Stand up and admit, tomorrow's never coming.
This is the new sh*t.
Stand up and admit.
Do we get it? No. Do we want it? Yeah.
This is the new sh*t,
Stand up and admit.

Now the explicit lyric censors at Interscope records released the explicit version of the song on with the appropriate explicit lyric labeling stickers. For the edited versions of the CD release the words
the chorus ends up being edited into this cleaner version of the same basic lyrics...

Revised Version of chorus:

Are you mothers Up and ready
For the new hit?
Stand up and admit, tomorrow's never coming.
This is the new hit.
Stand up and admit.
Do we get it? No. Do we want it? Yeah.
This is the new hit,
Stand up and admit.

(Note: Mothers Up and Ready
Still sounds almost just as
Mutha F**king ready
the way it is mixed )

Now listen to the video and music while you read the lyrics along with it, and for a moment become familiar with the song and its tempo, and how the lyrics flow...imagine the unedited version as you listen along.

 (...This is the New Sh*t...)

Everything has been said before
There's nothing left to say anymore
When it's all the same
You can ask for it by name

Babble babble bitch bitch
Rebel rebel party party
Sex sex sex and don't forget the "violence"
Blah blah blah got your lovey-dovey sad-and-lonely
Stick your STUPID SLOGAN in:
Everybody sing along.
Babble babble bitch bitch
Rebel rebel party party
Sex sex sex and don't forget the "violence"
Blah blah blah got your lovey-dovey sad-and-lonely
Stick your STUPID SLOGAN in:
Everybody sing

This is the new hit.
Stand up and admit.
Do we get it? No. Do we want it? Yeah.
This is the new hit,
Stand up and admit.

And now it's "you know who"
I got the "you know what"
I stick it "you know where"
You know why, you don't care.
And now it's "you know who"
I got the "you know what"
I stick it "you know where"
You know why, you don't care.

(For the last verse the explicit lyrics are used )

Babble babble bitch bitch
Rebel rebel party party
Sex sex sex and don't forget the "violence"
Blah blah blah got your lovey-dovey sad-and-lonely
Stick your STUPID SLOGAN in:
Everybody sing.

So,
LET US ENTERTAIN YOU
LET US ENTERTAIN YOU...
Blah blah blah blah everybody sing along.

Now that you have heard the song, did you notice the irony?
The original lyrics refer to Sh*t as possibly new stuff or new music, something along those lines, or possibly said the censors drugs (as in to score some new Sh*t, or dope of any kind unspecificed type on hand).

But the clean version becomes this is the new Hit as in possibly number one hit song, or also possibly as in taking a hit, as inhaling smoke.
( like taking a hit off a joint or smoking hits of rock cocaine or meth with a pipe).

Which has more impact or meaning to your ears...personally I think it is amazing how the song becomes the New Hit for radio play, and did just that. Marilyn Manson's title track used the word Sh*t to make sure that it was censored and sure to not get on the radio, but the clean version made a song about conformist recreational idle worship and drug use into a kiddie friendly manifesto about teenage angst and rebellion. As if the censors rewrote the lyrics with pure purposeful intentions. This also is the biggest selling album of all time for Marilyn Manson, largely due to the radio play of '...Sh*t...' which led to an edited video for MTV and the network music video programming showcased on Television, both cable and normal network channels. Apparently censorship works for Marilyn Manson both forwards and backwards. This is the purest of magick playing out the random yet saveage forces, that we so casually call art.

That is my entire say on the subject, I leave you the reader to judge the inherent subtleties for your own self. Thanx for taking time to read this article, and my opinions about censorhip today. Love is the Law.
