Marilyn Monroe Reaches New Heights in Chicago, IL
Marilyn Smiles in Chicago
Walking along the Magnificent Mile during a weekend trip to Chicago the iconic Marilyn Monroe appeared on the sidewalk. At 26 feet tall she was hard to miss despite the skyscrapers surrounding her. Seeing a larger than life statue of Marilyn was interesting and fun because I'd only seen her in movies and books. Artist J. Seward Johnson created "Forever Marilyn" based on the 1955 movie the "Seven Year Itch." The statue is going to be on display in Chicago until spring 2012.
"All I want is to be loved, for myself and for my talent" ~ Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn in the Windy City
While walking around the statue of Marilyn taking pictures and watching the other people react to seeing it I wondered what Marilyn would have thought about it. Would she have liked the size of the statue and where it’s placed on Chicago’s magnificent mile? Would she say to herself wow my thighs look fat in that dress and those shoes are all wrong? She might not like how her hair is fixed or the color they painted her toe nails. Who knows maybe she would laugh when she saw it or pose next to it along her devoted fans?
If she could come back and tell the world what she thought of her time on earth what would she say? Would she talk about the movies she made, or the books she read that inspired her? What about the men in her life? Did she ever find someone who truly loved her for who she was as a person not an icon?
It would have been wonderful to sit with Marilyn in my kitchen talking about life, politics, and religion. Of course being in the movies would have been a topic we’d discuss too. I think we would've been good friends if the opportunity had presented itself. Marilyn was such a great beauty to be sure, but a very special human being with talent, hopes, and dreams.
