Metal Mania - My Top Ten Favorite Headbanging Metal Songs

Crank it up!

To begin, metal is my hands down, all time favorite genre of music. In all honesty, I love most genres of music but metal has a special place in my heart. It doesn't have a bit of politically correct in it. It's brutally honest, at times. Metal personifies the rage against the machine attitude. I hope you enjoy the jams!

This hub is dedicated to the one, the only, the King of Hub-dom poetry, the Epigramman. You asked for it. You got it!

1.) Iron Maiden - “Hallowed Be Thy Name”

I dearly love this song. I have since the first time I heard it. More over I love it because I had the distinct pleasure of seeing them perform it live in Houston, TX more years ago than I am going to admit to. It was the first metal concert I ever went to. Let’s just say I was still under 18.

Now that 18 is long past, I have to ask myself, if I had a younger teenage daughter, would I allow her to attend such a concert with just one other person? Honestly, sorry young ladies, HELL NO!
This is not to say I would not trust a young teen or anything like that. It is to say that such events can be dangerous.

That night I saw one of the most horrific live acts of violence and that was just walking in to the building. A guy, I guess around 16-18, was just standing on the curb holding a shirt. I assume it was a concert jersey. About 10 or so younger teens jumped him all at once. They beat his face into the curb and left him laying in a pool of his own blood. Me being the stubborn dumb-ass that I often am, I wanted to jump in.

Talk about stupid. I would not have stood a chance. Was it brave? Not really, if you can’t help, your just adding to the problem. Luckily for me my date was significantly older than I and much wiser. While he was, and still is huge, he said flat out it’s too late now. The whole thing happened so fast.

Lesson: Ladies, travel in packs to such events if you feel the need to attend.

2.) Metallica - “Master of Puppets”

This band has been deemed by many the kings of metal. They have also been labeled as sell outs by some of their original fans. They slowed down to get more of a following.

The die hard crowd among us never forgave them. I still like them be the music old or new, but hey, that’s just me. One thing is for sure, slowing down brought them to a level of ticket sales never before seen.

3.) Metallica - One

This song, especially, I like for the sad story it tells. It speaks of a soldier and the horrors he lived through. He would have been better off not surviving.

It’s so tragic and more so because it is true for many of our brave men and women who give of themselves so the rest of us can remain free. Have you thanked an American soldier today? I would not want to dwell on where we would be without them. It surely would not be free.

4.) Scorpions - “Rock You Like a Hurricane”

There were too many nights I don’t remember that began by jamming on these guys. Thinking back on it conjures up memories of pool halls and bars I was not old enough to be allowed in, men I was not old enough to date, cars that were way too fast, and other things I refuse to put in print.

Needless to say, I was more than a little wild and very good at getting my way, especially since I didn't bother to ask for permission. In hindsight, I know now where the expression do as I do not as I say came from. It came from parents who must have done the same!

5.) Judas Priest - “Rage”

I had the great honor of seeing Judas Priest live, too. They put on one heck of a show. Rob can blow like no other.

Hm, how to describe the night? Imagine eight people crammed into a camaro flying up highway 45 so as to not miss the show after having slipped out.

Think too many people crammed into the Summit and some fool chick taking a stage dive off the second story seating. Word to the wise - Don’t do that. She never attended another concert, or anything else for that matter. It was not a pretty sight.

6.) Ronny James Dio - “Last In Line”

He will be greatly missed. Dio was a member of Black Sabbath for a time and was also known for his solo work.

Some thought him too old to really rock. I have to disagree. Ronny James Dio was a metal treasure.

Thanks to the wonder that is the Internet, his music will live on forever in halls of metal fame.

7.) Iron Maiden - “Run to the Hills”

While many say this refers to how God’s children should run to the hills in the final days, it actually tells of how the white man slaughtered the Native Americans. Ironically, this is a British band.

The show they put on is rich and layered with lights, sounds, props and full on crazy. I would not recommend this for impressionable children even with parental supervision.

A word to the wise, you might not want to sit in the first three rows... I'm just saying. (Trust me on this, some stains don't wash out.)

8.) Black Sabbath - “Heaven and Hell”

I had the chance to go see these guys and blew it! Lesson learned: Never, ever get caught. You will get grounded.

Never think you can take a nap and still make it home on time after partying with Jose gold label all afternoon and half the night. He packs one heck of a punch!

Also, scalping tickets is a crime and it's hard to sell them when you are not allowed out of your room. By the time it's dark and you can leap from the window to the tree and scurry down, anyone wanting to go is already gone.

9.) Black Sabbath - “War Pigs”

This song speaks for itself. It is as true today as the day it was written. Some may say it came out before the advent of real metal, and that may be true.

Without this band, metal may never have been born.

While Sharon and the kids may run the show now, Ozzy was a beast in his day. One of the old man's favorite pieces of rock and roll memorabilia is his guitar pick from Randy Rhodes. Different band, I know, but still.

10.) Metallica - ‘Wherever I May Roam”

It just blows the doors off!

If your going to go to the show, you need to dress the part.

Music is also a universal language.

In many ways rock of all forms exemplifies the spirit of America. It does not back down. It’s in your face but can be kind at the same time.

Many a rocker has supported our nation in one way or anther. Typically, on the news, we only hear the bad.

They love to never mention how musicians go play for troops overseas, often for free, how they raise money for charities, how they bring attention to worthy causes and so on. Don’t let what you see or hear in the media color your opinions.

Listen and form your own.

Rock and Roll is a big family.

All forms of rock are related to metal be they grandfathers as in the case of American folk rock, big brothers as in the case of classic rock or even distant cousins and little sisters as in the case of punk and alternative.

Each generation is in some way defined by its music. Metal was mine. While it drove my parents nuts, it gave me many hours of total escapism and head banging good times.

I still crank up the jams and rock around the house to this day. Now, it’s typically with a cleaning apparatus. Growing older can sucketh royally, but it doesn’t have to. Turn up the tunes and go back in time to when life was simpler, louder and always proud.

I like many forms of music and have thus decided an honorable mention category is required. Think of it as a family reunion.

The Outlaws - “Green Grass and High Tides Forever”

How wonderful is gaming?

This song is now loved by kids world wide thanks to video game home machines. Many a future guitar hero is being born right now playing this song as his or her fingers bleed all over mom's freshly mopped floor.

Parents, ear plugs are not that expensive. Give the little ones time. They will improve with practice.

Ted Nugent - “Great White Buffalo”

I could listen to this all day. I have seen Ted a few times and was never disappointed. Now, I know many don’t like his political views. Regardless of how you feel about his politics, you must admit, the man can rock. I have heard his TV show is decent too but I admit, I don't watch it. Who wants to watch TV when there are hubs to read? Seriously, the idiot box rots the brain.

ACDC - “If You Want Blood, You Got It”

This song was so good live! If you have never seen ACDC play live, I’m sorry. It’s one heck of an experience. Angus is so much fun!

He is a true guitar legend and arguably one of the best showman in rock and roll. If you have never seen them, it is well worth the ticket price. Take a chance, have some fun and be prepared to rock!

The Firm - “Satisfaction Guarenteed”

This was one of the best concerts I have ever been too! For whatever reason, that I don't know, it did not sell well. It ticked Jimmy Page off.

He addressed the crowd stating, "For those of you who bothered to show up, I'm about to give you one hell of a f_cking show!" He lived up to his word.

Motorhead - “Ace of Spades”

These guys are like metal on steroids!

It's hard core, driving beat is hypnotic. There will be no sleeping while this band plays. You won't need coffee or caffeine of any kind. Being still is out of the question.

You may be inspired to thrash about wildly. If nothing else, it's great exercise! No gym fees are required so you will save money too. You can't beat that.

Ladies, I do apologize for the lack of eye candy.

Greg Allman - “I’m no Angel”

OK, OK. I know, it’s kind of weak by the standards of the other songs listed. I still love it.

Did you know he was at one time hooked up with Cher?

He's not bad to look at either. Or wasn't in his day. I have not seen him lately, but you know what they say. Women get old. Men grow distinguished.

Blue Murder - “We All Fall Down”

This band is the typical hair metal band but I love the song. Try not to look at the hair. It has been known to hypnotize.

This band never really got much recognition but the song rocks. Actually, the CD has several good songs on it. I think by the time they hit the scene there was just too much competition.

Guns and Roses - “Welcome to the Jungle”

I'm no fan of the lead singer. Personally, I think he should be thrown under a jail house and never let out. That is why I refuse to see them live. It's still a good song.

In case you don't know, he's a "beater". That means he likes to hit women. I don't know if he is in or out of the pen at the moment, but I sincerely hope if he continues his abusive ways he meets up with the wrong woman. One like my aunt was. She had a saying that I think applies well in his case. Everyone sleeps. We all have a cast iron skillet in the cabinet. Enough said.

Evenescence - “Tourniquet”

This girl has the best voice! For all you guys, she’s considered hot too. Her lyrics are unique, her videos inspiring, and her fashion sense rules. Evanescence is truly one of my favorite newer bands.

In conclusion

We all need to cut lose sometimes. Crank it up! If it’s too loud, you're too old. Bang your head, shake your money maker, and have some fun!

I remember you telling me about concerts you had attended. You have good stories here to go along with the music. All I can say is Rock On Randy Rhodes, tis a shame about the plane accident. I really want to attend a concert myself... However my favorite, current, band the Arctic Monkeys are not visiting Cleveland anytime soon. Dio was a voice smith, enough said. I also like Metallica, not as much as Sabbath but close. I agree that "music is a universal language". Great hub. Eclectic in information, reflection and art as always Rhonda. Sincerely, Matt.

......great comment from above .....and yes my dear sweet Rhonda you have helped me with my dreams (that is why Brian Wilson wrote a song about you - Help me Rhonda)

and put together what I think is the ultimate heavy metal hub of all time - it really doesen't get any better than this so I will make sure I promote it like there's no tomorrow - lol - and I will start with a posting on my Facebook page - love your selection of tunes and you went right back to its roots with the Godfathers of Metal - Black Sabbath

Had a lot of fun with this on Sunday morning - it's a true labor of love and it always shows in everything you do and write the way I love your opening introduction and your thoughts of the day - that's a great idea because you can keep it topical and day to day - I remember seeing the original Billy Jack as a kid and I have the song One Tin Soldier (still to this day on 45rpm record)

.....I think some people have to see this hub and rejoice - let me gather up the troops ......thank you for your dedication Rhonda

That was awesome, rocking out to the songs, I love Metallica, I've seen them twice in Dublin, One band I always wished I saw play live when they were together were Pantera, I never got the chance, a crying shame what happened to Dimebag, very sad, at least I still have their music to rock out to...

As you said: “Honestly, sorry, (young ladies), HELL NO!” :)))

This is one of the pleasures of being ‘matured’. We may admit our ‘sins’ without getting condemned.

I really never liked rock metal. It scared me. It does provoke fear, anger and imbalanced, or should I say irrational, thoughts. Interesting to see they refer to it (or some of it) as ‘trash metal’. Though my son, a professional tuba and bass guitar player, did try to draw my attention to the ‘excellent’ talent of the musicians. Of cause with no avail. I see them as the clowns, acrobats and stunts in the world of music.

CCR was the nearest I got to hard metal. Oh, and I loved them and I still do.

This is a suburb hub about hard metal music. Voted UP and awesome.

Rhonda, I’m posting this comment on Epi’s FB-page as well, where you are pimped :)))

I just realized that I've got an identical twin in a female body. As a crusty old rock 'n roll musician, I've got some crusty old personal stories I can share about Ted Nugent, Greg Allman, and an old dude who's not up here by the name of John Kay.

Poetvix, I love your choices in music! Unfortunately I took time to listen to just Guns'N'Roses, and then I read what you said about the lead singer. I guess I'm not surprised that Rock stars can be "beaters" too, yet it didn't make me happy to read it. You have your own file in my computer, so I'll be back to read and listen to more. These days I don't take much time to listen to music, and the car I've been driving for 18 months the radio doesn't work, but, no budget...!

Thanks for the good hub, my friend!

Great hub! I was struck by the idea that Metallica was abused because of the "Black" album. It's my opinion that nobody deliberately passes up a great song. Nobody. If you have it in you then you write it. It is possible that people explore the minor chords and experiment with volume and staccato and whatever but people like fame and they like fortune. To me Metallica grew and grew until those songs appeared on their minds and their instruments. It's the same with Pink Floyd. Listen to their earlier stuff and then listen to Dark Side of the Moon. They just blossomed.... anyway that's the way I see it...

Inky - Thank you so much for dropping by. I do hope you are having a good morning. I forgotten about the Arctic Monkeys. I remember listening to them off a link you sent.

It really was a shame about Randy. I remember where I was when I heard. It's so sad. We lose many of the best just that way. I can't wait to read your new hub! Anyone that has not read Inky's work, it's deep. He can play on words like no one else. God bless Matt and may all of your hubs be happy.

*Epi - Ironic you bring up the Brian Wilson song. My father told me a long time ago, God rest his soul, that he named me after that song to help him get over the death of my older sister. I hated that song growing up! Not because of him of course but because boys used to tease me with it on the playground. How silly is youth?

Thank you so much, more than I can say, for your kindness and encouragement. You are the most generous soul.

When I was around 10 or so I was determined to grow up and marry Billy Jack. I think his girlfriend, Jean, in the movie is why I have a hard time getting along with blondes to this day... jealousy! Now that I am grown I have all the Billy Jack movies even the horrid third one. The pre-quill was really hard to find! It's a biker flick, one of the first I think.

War Pigs still gets me every time I hear it. Have a most blessed day, my friend.

Adrian - Thank you so much for your time and commenting. You saw Metallic? I stand in awe. I have always wanted to but the tickets are too expensive for my blood.

Pantera rocked! God bless and happiest of hubbing.

* Martie - Thank you so much for checking this out, especially in light of the fact that you don't like metal. I too am a big CCR fan! They are a southern staple.

Sometimes I feel like such a hypocrite telling young people not to do what I did. But, then I think about how many of my friends didn't make it and I run my big mouth anyway.

I'm LMAO about the "pimped" part! Hehe, I guess you could say that, huh? Too funny. Epi is the sweetest as are you. Thank you so much for your kindness. You are always a classy lady. We are lucky to have you here at the Hub.

* Cleaner3 - Thanks bunches for the read and comment. I understand about the needing a rest. I was jammed out by the time I finished this. It was fun. Have a great day and God bless.

TheManWithNoPants - I don't think I will ever see that screen name without giggling. Holy crap Batman! You partied with some legends. If you ever want to write a book, that's a topic that would take you to the top of the charts.

Thank you so much for your time and your kind comment. I know how valuable your time is. May God always bless and keep you and watch over you. Happiest of hubbing, bud and rock on!

* SubRon7- As always, it is an honor and a privilege to see you. I'm glad you like the tunes. My own file? Gasp! Now, I'm blushing. You made my morning and once again I thank you for courage and bravery. Your letting me have you as a character in Obamica is a debt I can never repay. You are about to find yourself on the hill. I just have to figure out in my head how to get you there. You have an important, ongoing role to play in the story, for your country. God bless you always and I hope that radio decides to act right. You could try the female trick. Bang on it til it dies for good or decides to act right! Happiest of hubbing!

* The Suburban Poet - It's great to see you. Thank you for the read and comment.

I know, isn't it sad how they were treated? After all the killer tunes to have their own fans turn on them because they didn't like a new album. I will never understand. Kiss experienced something similar when Simmons dated Cher. I don't know where fans get off thinking they have the right to expect, well really anything out of the people they supposedly love. Famous types are people too. They grow and change and are layered just like we are. Go figure.

God bless you and I hope all of your hubs are happy.

My best friend was playing Metallica One on a Hughes & Kettner head with Peavey and Marshall speakers cabinets the other night. He was getting a particularly good sound I thought during the cool change around 4:30 min into the song "One". It sounded like 300 watt Crate on steroids.

We must be about the only FIRM fans that I know of. I saw FIRM a long time ago. There was a heavy storm with lots of lightening that cut the electricity out for 30 minutes, but Paul Rodgers and the audience just started singing a cappella. I was about 5 rows back on Pages side of the stage and when the lights came back on Page got out his bow and played for about 30 minutes. After he was done I raised my arm and just kept it there and I was close enough I would swear he made eye contact. It was one of the best concerts I ever saw. That and 2112 with RUSH, backed up by April Wine and REO long ago.

I love the firm. Seriously, Paul and Jimmy together! You just can't do better. I'm a huge bad company fan too. Paul's voice is pure and well, Jimmy Page is Jimmy Page. I stand in awe at the Rush and April Wine viewing. Talk about a show to see. I wish I could have seen them both.

Thank you so much for taking the time to jam and comment. God bless and happy hubbing!

Hey vix, heavy metal came in the early 80s while I was learning how to shag dance cause the girls liked boys who could show them off on the dance floor lol. This a cool list though; you shoulda been around when some of these bands were just starting out like Black Sabbath; no one had ever heard anything like that before. Iron Man was the big radio hit. Oh and are the Outlaws really considered metal or proto-metal?

poetvix profile image

poetvix 4 years ago from Gone from Texas but still in the south. Surrounded by God's country. Author

Alastar - Thanks bunches for the read and the kind comment. Iron man rules! I love that song. I would have loved to have been around when they were first starting out. By the time I hit high school metal was the norm.

The outlaws are not metal in any form that I am aware of but rather classic rock I think. I had to include them anyway for the song is stellar jams in my book. I like many classic rock bands and even some folk rock. Actually, sh... I like classical too! There's not much music I don't like other than rap. I just don't get it. I don't do a lot of country but I do like a small amount of it as well. For me though, metal will always be number one on the list.

Again, you've got a killer list there! I love Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc.... all the classics.

I LOVE that you did this, and listed what all you have!

I didn't get past the first one - "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is easily one of my faves of all time too!

(also, you can see how very far behind on my reading that I am...forgive me!)

I gotta warn you, once you go to epi's site... you will be a goner! It is purely addictive for music lovers.

Voted UP & across the board. Your personal experiences were pricelessly memorable and kinda funny! Hugs, mar.

Hi Rhonda that was so cool and awesome to hear from you once again. Dear Epi - Thank you. I'm sorry. I have yet to see the link. I have not been to FB for a few days. I'm trying to stop my addiction to Farmville cold turkey and write something, anything, for the first time in months. Other than lesson plans that is. I'm smiling here. Students come back Monday and I spent five hours this morning writing lesson plans. Some of the best I have ever done I think, even if I do say so myself.

I have missed you. I'm not sure what was up with me but I had to withdraw for a while. I'm hoping that's over and I'm hoping to get a new hub up. I started it in word last night, but it has a long way to go. It's so good to know you are well. I was keeping tabs on your FB feed while I was lost in the mind numbing vortex that is Farmville. I don't really understand the pull. I mean sure the unicorns are just so God awful cute, but still. But it sucks me in like a moth drawn to a flame. It's nuts. I know this. They need to make a support group for recovering gamers. The old man is currently addicted to Rift.

I inhaled your poems like I do coffee not realizing how much I had missed it until I tasted it yet again. God bless you, our most dear poet with the heart of a saint. Peace!

Dearest Epi - It's so good to see you here this afternoon. I was jamming on some of these the other day when doing a new article. I'll email you the link for the jams. I warn you, the Gaga video I put up there is shocking.

Elwood and I send you our best from a beautiful, bright, sunny day in Texas. He's a bit wound up right now. He just finished driving off a battalion of squirrels from the back yard and is most pleased with himself. He declared war on the squirrel population years ago. Luckily for them, he's not as fast as he used to be. Have an awesome day, dearest Epi. God bless you and Miss Tiffy and Master Gabriel. Rock on, Sir Epi, rock on!
