Planting the Seed

My Love for Flowers

I believe that my very first memory of flowers really did "plant a seed". Over the years it has blossomed to my overwhelming love and appreciation for their beauty. As a child I would always look forward to the weekends as they usually meant a family outing.

On one particular Spring day, it was warm and sunny and we drove out to the countryside for a walk in the woods. I realise now the attraction there, for my father was a keen photographer too. I remember gasping with delight, at the sight before us. It was like something out of a fairy tale - an enchanted forest maybe? A carpet of blue weaving through the trees, the light breeze carrying the sweet scent of the bluebells - it was truly beautiful.

Had this scene been in the present day, I too, like my father then, would have delighted in taking photographs of this glorious sight. Instead, being a little girl eight years old, I skipped and ran through the enchanting trees laughing with joy as I picked the bluebells.

The first flowers I grew were from two packets of seeds given to me by my Grandmother to plant in a small patch of her garden. The seeds were Cornflowers and Love in the Mist. I planted the seeds and watered the plants with total commitment and enthusiasm, and even now I can remember the enormous pleasure I felt when they flowered. To my young mind, planting a few small seeds, adding a little attention and patience, then "Hey Presto - Beautiful Flowers!" seemed nothing short of magic. The full story can be found in my hub My Favourite Cottage Garden Flowers.

As I grew up and the years went by, I always wished for a garden like my Nan’s. There would always be something tasty to pick and eat for our dinner and there were always some flowers to take home. It was a place of calm and tranquillity, there was something so peaceful about watching Nan pottering around the garden. I have that garden now, and can understand my Nan’s love for gardening.

Nan passed away a few years ago, but I like to believe she is never far away when I am in my garden.

Nowadays, I I find myself pottering around the garden with my grandchildren as they pick the flowers to take home.

What Draws us to a Flower? Fragrance, Colour, Shape?

Whether it’s a carpet of bluebells in the woods, a field of lavender or a single red rose, each and every flower has it’s own characteristics and individuality. Some flowers have a powerful intoxicating scent, for example the "Lily"; it is instantly noticeable if you walk into a room. A vase of Lilies never go unnoticed. I adore the delicate, sweet nectar scent of the Honeysuckle, especially when it’s carried on a warm evening breeze. It is easy to be drawn to a Rose for it’s potent, sweet fresh fragrance. Some flowers are beautiful for their bold colours; take the eye catching vivid red and yellow or deep purple of the Tulip for example. In total contrast is the soft pastel and subtle shades of the Sweet Pea and the pure simplicity in the understated white of the Snowdrop. Some flowers like to make a statement - like the large and dramatic "Dinner Plate Dahlia" or glorious yellow and gold "Begonia". We all have our favourites and our own reasons for being drawn to them.

My favourites are depicted here in the 12 months of my calendar and have been photographed in my garden by me.

“A flowers’ silence is broken with your smile of joy - it will speak to you words of love, gratitude and peace” Movie Master

Hi movie master, this hub is absolutely stunning. I voted up and beautiful. Do you think this calendar is printable? I would definitely hang it in my house. It's that divine!

Good luck with the contest, if I were judging, this beauty would definitely be a winner!

Have a great day!

I thought you couldn't spell. The I realized all of this color was from across the pond. I live in Florida where everything grows well until the brutal summer. The wild flowers here are spectacular, there are orchids peculiar to this area. No one seems to notice. They are bulldozed down and replaced with manicured lawns and non-indigenous plants.

Some of us were glad that the building boom collapsed and real estate plummeted. Talking of fragrance . . . my Ynkee neighbor complains about the thick, heady aroma of the night blooming jasmine. We sit out back and breathe it in.

I will be back for my answer. Are we allowed to print out a personal copy? I am an artist and I have a pro printer. These are some of the best photos!

Great pictures of flowers here movie master. Are they from your garden? Fresh flowers are indeed beautiful and very pleasant to the eye, especially if a beautiful girl is smiling holding it. =) 1 vote up movie master.

Hi WD Curry, that is so sad about the orchids being bulldozed down, fortunately a lot of our wild flowers are protected here now, especially wild/rare orchids.

How could anyone complain about the beautiful fragrance of the Jasmine? yes, you are welcome to print the pictures.

Many thanks for your comments, have a great day, best wishes MM

A truly awesome hub MovieMaster!

I love following the seasons and all the changes to nature that it involves. What a beautiful way to follow the year - with flowers.

I can understand you delight when seeing the 'carpet of blue' - bluebells are stunning. One of our local woods - Harron Hill Wood - is like that at about the end of April beginning of May. The local name for the woods is actually the 'bluebells wood'.

I loved this hub very much and have bookmarked as a favourite. Voted up + awesome + beautiful!

Hi Movie Master,

Such beautiful pictures of flowers here. We had a dogwood tree in the backyard of my childhood, which was in bloom every year by my birthday.

Though sunflowers are my favorite, roses are very lovely. One bouquet that my husband bought me were so fragrant that I put the vase with them on my bureau and felt like I woke up in the middle of a romantic rose garden each morning for a week.

Night jasmine was the scent I remember most about attending Chapman University in Southern California. They bloomed around the building that housed the Psychology Department, and many warm evening hours were spent chatting on the front steps.

In Seville Spain, the scent of the orange blossoms as my friend and I explored the streets of that city was indelibly etched in my memory, and I hope I can one day return with my family.

Thanks so much for inspiring these memories! Voted this hub Up and Beautiful!

Those were beautiful pictures and beautiful memories. This is a precious hub. I loved the poppies the best. What flower do you have pictured in August? That one I am not familiar with.

Hi homesteadbound, the August flower is the Fuschia, it's a perennial that normally finishes flowering in October. Our weather here is still mild and it's still flowering and looks lovely!

Thank you for visiting and your comments, have a wonderful day and take care MM

Great pictures MM, One flower that is over looked is the lily of the valley, it has a very fragrant tiny bell shaped flower, I cut about 30 at a time and place in a small vase on my table, the sweet smell washes over the entire house. These flowers grow around the foundation of the house in the shade, when the warm winds blows, the aroma fills my bedroom, I love spring!!! Voted up and awesome.
