Movie Stars and Mustaches

History of Mustaches

In Neolithic times, a Scythian horseman is the oldest known man to sport a mustache, which is seen on a piece of art, titled the "Horseman". He was also bald and part of a nomadic tribe that was known for their skill in shooting arrows with deadly accuracy. After battles they would also drink the blood of the first enemy they killed. Genghis Khan is another example of tyrant with a manly mustache who murdered thousands of people in other tribes in the 1100's.

Since this tribe lived north of Mongolia, near Siberia, I would have assumed the men would have grown hair anywhere they could due to the cold, and, of course, the lack of a good razor. Apparently, they shaved with sharp stones, which I presume was not pleasant.

Old Movie Stars

Many older and new movie stars have mustaches, and they often have beards or goatees as well. A couple of the older stars that are interesting include Errol Flynn, who kept a thin mustache due to angular features, and Clark Gable. Clark Gable’s sexy mustache was a “chevron style”, which seemed to shorten his wide upper lip. Another point of interesting fact about Clark Gable was his full sideburns that partially hid his large ears. Females swooned over this dashing man despite the ears.

Sam Elliot

Sam Elliot is considered by many to have the best mustache of all the movie stars. He is rated number one in the Sweet 'Stache: 50 Badass Moustaches and the Faces Who Sport Them.” His thick, handlebar moustache is almost a trademark for a rough and tough cowboy. This sexy man can get the job done!

Sam Elliot was born in 1944, and at his age of nine decided to become an actor. He has been in a huge number of westerns, but has appeared in other types of movies also. To my knowledge he has always had a mustache, and he has aged quite well.

Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck is another hunk that has worn a mustache throughout his career. He was born in 1945, and is well-known for his role in Magnum PI, a TV series. He is currently one of the stars in Blood Bloods. He has also played in several movies and other TV programs. His good looks, sexy mustache, dimples and charm have kept him very popular throughout the years.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp grew a thin mustache for Pirates of the Caribbean, along with a braided goatee when he played Jack Sparrow. That mustache style became very popular with men when the movie debuted. He has had an interesting career from the beginning with his own band, and then, he began acting. His career took off from playing in 21 Jump Street to a wide variety of movie characters. He is certainly one of the most versatile Hollywood movie stars.

Yosemite Sam

Yosemite Sam, last but not least, is the Looney Tunes character with the wildest mustache. This cartoon character seems to have a few anger management problems, but I did not want to leave him out of the variety of mustaches that are seen from Hollywood.

In Summary

There are many other movie stars with all types of facial hair. I picked some stars with unique mustaches. For a mustache to look good it must be trimmed frequently. It takes about a week to 10 days to grow a mustache for most men, but not all men can grow some of the thicker mustache styles.

Pamela, I love this hub and so appropriate for this single woman to read on Valentine's Day! Sam Elliott is the hunk of all hunks in my book. I first fell in love with him when he starred with Cher in "Mask". I also like Tom Selleck. Johnny Depp you can keep. To me he looks like he has b.o. In fact, I've read that he's not too keen on showering when he's on a movie set. Yuck!

I am compelled to add a favorite mustache (and my personal heart throb) to you cast of hunks and that is Yanni. Oh, my lord - he could park his boots under my bed any day!

Thanx for the great read and the nice topic change from the norm!

Yeah, Pamela, Gable, Selleck and Flynn look purdy good with their mustaches, but you have to admit I am the handsomest pardner of all!

Signed, Yosemite Sam

Thanks for this fun hub.

Now you're talking!! Clark Gable and Sam Elliot would get my vote, plus if Clark were still alive, i would give Scarlett a run and Sam could put his boots under my table any day..Hee..

I posted a comment earlier but i must have not hit post. I will try again. I love Clark Gable and Sam Elliot but i would prefer a man without a mustache. I have a sensitive lip..Hee. Fun hub..loved it..

Bravewarrior. I didn't think about Yanni. He is a good candidate for my article. With Johnnie Depp, I thought it was interesting that people copied his mustache as a pirate. I didn't know about the bathing problem. Do you think it has anything to do with him living in France so frequently? Sam Elliott has always been my favorite too. Thanks so much for your comments.

Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott...yeppie, I bet they are just fine with NO mustache too.

My ex had a mustache and it was probably part of his charm that I found enchanting when we first met.

Thanks for sharing, Pamela.

Some guys look great and even more attractive with a mustache, while others not. I can handle those who look great, as long as the mustache does not cover the upper lip... It should always be well-trimmed :)

Interesting, well-presented hub! Thank you, Pamela :)

I must share with you my favorite actor of all time, and his famous mustache . . . Ronald Colman was a huge silent screen star and then was not only one of the very few to successfully crossover into talking pictures, but became an even bigger star - it was discovered, when folks could actually hear him speak, that he just so happened to have the greatest speaking voice in the English language. To this day, when someone (actors, cartoon characters, etc) wants to convey a sense of heroism, a sense of virtue and noble endeavor, without even knowing who he was or why they are speaking that way, they do a Ronald Colman voice. Our finest actor (he taught everyone how to act on the big screen and with sound), stunningly handsome, a mellifluous voice, Ronald Colman is not nearly so remembered as Gable or Grant or so many others, and I think it is largely because of his old world style mustache - he just looks from a bygone era, whereas Fonda or Cooper, etc, not so much.

Mickey Sr., Thank you for sharing this information about Ronald Coleman. My mother has talked about him also. So many silent screen stars did not make the transition. Ichecked the link and had forgotten what a good looking man he was. I appreciate it.

Fun article! I never thought much about moustaches until I got with my husband. At that time he had the horseshoe style moustache that came down to his chin. I loved it. Then he grew a goatee, and is now working on a full beard...I never knew men were as trend-conscious as women!

I have to say that I think Yosemite Sam has the sexiest moustache. Love the length and of course that red color. :) Really enjoyed reading this!

Sharkye, Some men really look good with facial hair and it sournds like your husband is one of them. Yosemite Sam's moustache is certainly a great one. Thanks for your comments.
