Most musicians are looking to become the next big thing. Hardest part is becoming "known," especially outside their usual listeners.

You may sit there and say you like country and pop, and do not care for rock and alternative. But maybe there is a particular alternative band that you will/do like. Or maybe you are a die hard rap fan, but you just haven't heard this one artist yet.

Below are a few artists who may have been around a while or not, but have not become a common name just quite yet.

Civil Twilight

This three man band consider themselves "lifelong friendbrothers," and grew-up together in South Africa. They were inspired by bands like U2, Oasis, Nirvana, The Verve, and Radiohead. They recently came out with their hit "Letters from the Sky," and you can hear other songs from their debut album on their official website. Keep your ears peeled because they will probably be dominating several radio stations near you soon!

SIMILAR TO: U2, Coldplay

B.C. Jean

She has the attitude and edge of P!NK, but the soft side of Duffy. B.C. Jean was recently on The View to belt out her new single "I'll Survive You," and caught the attention of anyone watching. This talented artist has written songs for Beyonce ("If I Were a Boy") and Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana ("Are You Ready"). You can hear B.C. Jean's unique voice on her several singles on the official website. She will be catching more and more attention with her voice and originality!

SIMILAR TO: Duffy, Brandi Carlile, Katy Perry

Santigold (Santogold)

This Philidelphia chick has been around the block for a while, but her unusual sound tends to make her music rare on the Top 40 radio stations. Actually first heard her on the speakers at a clothing store while shopping, and just had to ask an employee who she was! Her most famous song, that many may know if they hear it, is "Creator." Santigold is mostly placed in the New Wave and Electronica genres, but her sounds are just down-right infectious and fun, especially "Say Aha"!

SIMILAR TO: M.I.A., Lady Gaga

Young the Giant (a.k.a. The Jakes)

"My Body" and "Cough Syrup" are this bands two most recent singles...and hits! Both off their self-titled debut album, Young the Giant is actually starting to get the attention and credit they deserve. The sultry looks and voice from lead singer Sameer Gadhia being backed by amazing drums from Fran├žois Comtois and guitar rifts by Jacob Tilley, Eric Cannata, and Payam Doostzadeh leaves this California band with EVERYTHING! And to believe they've been around since 2004...who was hiding them!?!

SIMILAR TO: Kings of Leon, Snow Patrol

Florence + The Machine

Recently featured on So You Think You Can Dance? with her new smash hit "Cosmic Love," this band is going to be everywhere soon! Her other big single, "Dog Days Are Over," graced the air waves in 2010, and you cannot help but get entranced by Florence's beautiful, almost Celtic style, voice. Drums, harps, choirs, keyboards, guitars...you never know what she has up her sleeve next in her large, outstanding collaborations of sound. Born in South London a mere 24 years ago, this red-headed vocalist and her band are taking over America!

SIMILAR TO: The Cranberries, Ani DiFranco

Wale

Born Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, this Washington D.C. native is hitting the rap scene hard. He is only 26 years old, but has an eerie resemblance to the late Tupac in the way he rhymes. Definitely bringing back an "old school" feel to rap music, Wale has other well known rap artists featured in his songs, such as Rick Ross. Wale has also collaborated with other artists including Lady Gaga, giving this up and coming rapper a resume that is hard to ignore. David Jeffries of allmusic remarked that Wale has a "post-Kanye, post-Lil Wayne, alternative-meets-hardcore style." Is he the new Lil' Wayne or 50 Cent? He just may be!

SIMILAR TO: Jay-Z, Drake

These are obviously a small portion of amazing artists that need to get their name out there! If you have any suggestions of artists, I am open to hear from you!

More music artists will be discussed in the future, but until then, give these artists a try!
