Swedish Singers Performing Each Other's Songs

There are many great musicians all over the world. I mostly listen to more modern country music by american singers like Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood. My big idols since I was a little girl are Bon Jovi. I also like to listen to rock music from the 1980's. As a teenager I mostly listened to European techno music. I guess I will be writing more than just one hub about music, because it is a big part of my life. I'll come back to these artists above some other time. In this hub I'll concentrate on some Swedish singers that have been on many people's lips in Scandinavia the past months because of their participation in a Swedish reality tv series called ”Så mycket bättre”.

A very popular Swedish singer and songwriter is Tomas Ledin. Already in the late 1970's he was singing in the ABBA choir. After that he had his own career as a singer. Most of his songs are in Swedish. Only in his earlier years as a singer, he had a couple of English hits. Tomas Ledin has always been loved by people in all ages here in Scandianvia. His popularity has rised even more since he joined the popular reality tv series called ”Så mycket bättre” (”So much better”), where he and the other five singers performed each others' songs. Tomas Ledin sings songs about the everyday life. This can be very simple things and everyone seems to be able to relate to the content of his songs. He is a very down to earth person too. The other Swedish musical artists participating in this series, except Tomas Ledin, were: Eva Dahlgren, Laleh Pourkarim, Jason ”Timbuktu” Diakité, Lena Philipsson, Mikael Wiehe and Martin ”E-Type” Eriksson . The concept of this series is that the artists perform each others' songs in their own unique way. It has been very interseting to listen to new versions of songs that's being performed by other singers. The interesting thing is that these musicians come from different backgrounds, sings different types of music genres and are in various ages.

Eva Dahlgren was discovered in the late 1970's. She has a beautiful voice and was very popular in the 1980´s and 1990's. She is still one of the greatest female singers in Sweden. She is married to the jewerly designer and former model Efva Attling, who was earlier married to the Swedish singer Niklas Strömstedt. Many people were surprised that both Eva and Efva turned out to be homosexual. This was in the mid 1990's. Now everyone seems to think it's a natural thing that these two artists are a married couple. One of the most famous songs by Eva Dahlgren is called ”Vem tänder stjärnorna” meaning "Who lights the stars?". In that music video you can see Stellan Skarsgård, who is a Swedish actor. Some of his sons are actors too. One of them are Alexander Skarsgård, who's starring the popular us tv series ”True Blood”. It's a small world we live in. Eva Dahlgren and Tomas Ledin has known each other since both of their musical careers began.

Laleh Pourkarim, usually known as just Laleh, is mostly known for her unique voice and the way she sings. When you hear Laleh on the radio, you know it's her. She played one of the leading roles in the Swedish comedy movie ”Jalla Jalla” from year 2000. After that she decided that she wanted to be a singer instead of an actor. As a little girl Laleh and her parents came from Iran to Sweden as refugees. In year 2005 she won a Swedish music prize for the best Swedish female artist, the newcomer of the year and the producer of the year. Laleh sings in both Swedish and English. One of her biggest hits is called ”Live Tomorrow”.

Jason Diakité, known as the singer ”Timbuktu” in Sweden, is a rapper. He is very popular among teenagers. In one of his songs called ”Ett Brev” (”A Letter”) he's telling the prime minister how to act to make Sweden and the world a better place to live in. He tells the prime minister to pick up the phone and make a peace call. The fact is that the prime minister actually replied to Timbuktu. There are several popular rap singers rapping in Swedish. Among others they are Petter, who had many hits already during the 1990's and Mange Schmidt. I will probably come back to these two some other time.

Some Of the Singers Are Also Known Outside Sweden

Lena Philipsson, also known as Lena Ph, had some English hits in Sweden in the 1980's. In the 1990's she wasn't very visible as a singer, but the past ten years she has had several Swedish hits and has participated in many tv shows, and also run her own shows at different arenas. She's has been married to Per Holknekt, who is one of the founders of the Swedish company for the fashion clothes ”Odd Molly”

Mikael Wiehe started his musical career in the 1960's. He has been a member of several bands during his years as a singer. Many of his songs are political and he is known as a fighter against rasism. Personally I haven't listen to many of his songs, beacuse I wasn't born when he started his career.

Martin Eriksson aka E-Type, is a singer I personally listened to during my younger years. He sings some mix of techno and rap, or music in the genre eurodance. He always has a female background singer singing the refrain in his songs. Before his solo career E-Type played the drums in a rock band. He still looks like a rock artist with his long hair. E-Type sings his songs in English. Some of his hits are ”This is the way” and ”Angels crying”.

To see these musicians singing each other's songs and singing together in the tv series ”Så mycket bättre” during the fall 2011 has been entertaining. This was the second season for the series and it seems to be a good concept in Swedish television. The series has many viewers in all ages and some new hits have been born thanks to the singers' cooperation. What's interesting is also that the singers talk about their peronal lives and do things together to get to know each other better. Thanks to the tv series you get to know the persons, not only the singers.

This tv series is a great concept. It connects people in all ages when the musicians mix their music genres with each other. Sweden has hade many successful singers who has become famous, not only in Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia, but also in many countries abroad.

Very Different Genres

If you listen to the dfferent singers in the videos, pretty soon you realize how different their music genres are. That's why it is so interesting when the musicans re-write each others' songs and perform them.

You did a great review of the fantastic artist in Så mycket bättre and I watched every episode and enjoyed listen to these talented artists. I didn't know so much about Lalhe before these series but I was very impressed by the way she made the familiar music into her own style!

Thanks for this interesting hub

Sannel, Laleh is fantastic and Timbuktu's songs seem to get stuck in my head. Tomas Ledin is the king. He's songs are simple and yet so fantastic. I'm glad you liked this hub. Thank you! Kram :)

Tina, I guess Laleh is the most unique artist of these. She really has her own style and she seems to have reached out to a big part of the Swedish audience. I really like the concept of "Så mycket bättre" and I'm hoping for another season with great artists. Thank you!

......well you know how much I love music my dear Miss M - so with an open mind I always like to 'try' music from all over the world and I can always tell your hubs are like labors of love - you put so much heart and soul into them - and for readers for me it's often an enlightening and educational experience.

Sending you warm wishes to you and your family and good energy too from lake erie time ontario canada with first cup of coffee and listening to J.S. Bach for recorder and harpsichord at 8:49am on a typical late November day in Canada - cold wind chill; threat of snow

Hello epi, it has been a while since I wrote this hub. There's now a new season for this tv series with other artists. I could not imagine my life without music. I try to find new music and "try" it too. Maybe it would be time for me to start listening to Bach. I can imagine it's relaxing. It's cold here too and a littly windy. It has slowly started snowing. It's 4.15 pm. Now I have to go to my parents' house to see what my children are doing there, try to get them home and have some dinner. Thank you for your time and energy. :)
