Music Magpie Review, Unbiased And Independent

Unbiased Review On Music Magpie, Make Money For Your Stuff, Easily and Online?

So, you want to make money for your stuff, easily and online? Well, this is an unbiased Music Magpie review corrulated from real-time experience. As an experiment, and to avoid sending ex-shop stock DVD's, CD's and gaming to landfill, we thought we would give Music Magpie a try. Money for old rope comes to mind for many of these pre-owned items - any amount of cash is always received gratefully, so it seemed an attractive proposition after viewing an advert on the main television network.

As someone who is entrepreneurial in nature, it intrigued me as to how Music Magpie's business model works. For me, using this opportunity to dissect and learn by, is more valuable than the cash itself. In reviewing musicMagpie and their operations, this article is guaranteed unbiased and objective as it goes by actual experience rather than formulated on other people's experiences. You are getting the information you require as I go through the sequence of events.

Music Magpie Enticing Advert On Network Television

As someone who has a few unwanted cd's, DVD's and games left over from a business concern, I thought I would give the UK's Music Magpie a go after watching their enticing advert on network television. I thought this might be a good way of obtaining money from stock that was left over from a defunct business.

'Money for old rope' is the phrase that comes to mind, so I am not too worried as to how much I receive. However, that cynical mind of mine tells me that Music Magpie is probably another one of those sites that quotes top pay for your CD's, DVD's and gaming, until it comes to the cheque payment where this could be a different story.

At the time of writing this I have not tested Music Magpie but I aim to write my experience as I go and use this as a unique learning experience that I can share in this article with the reader.

Who Are Music Magpie?

This saves time, hasstle and the charges associated with selling at car boot sales, on e-bay and Amazon. There is instant cash without the pain. You just scan, using your web cam (allow adobe to access camera), or manually add the barcode on the site and you then get an instant quote.

Experiencing The Benefits

Using this article as an experiment, experiencing the benefits of sending unwanted pre-owned items to musicMagpie is something that is attractive.

People love the idea of recycling goods, thereby avoiding the inevitable dumping at landfill, whilst benefiting with a cash payment. In these times of using funds efficiently and effectively, this is a great selling point to many people.

As music magpie offers freepost and a free courier service for those who have lots of items, so there is no hassle and expense in sending your items.

As you can see, the Music Magpie's business model is attractive to seller's with instant quotes. But what about the small print or the terms and conditions?

Terms and Conditions - A Get Out Clause?

The terms and conditions of the transactions seem, initially, to be very open and biased in favour of Music Magpie. Anything can be, potentially, be picked on as a way of reducing the value further. However, at the time of writing this article, it wouldn't be fair to assume anything and they might hold dear to their quotes.

My main concern would be clause 6:

'Good condition packaging. Cases may have light scratches, but booklets and artwork need to be free from tears, stickers and other major blemishes.'

This is a broad area. It is very rare that music cd's, games and DVD's would be without stickers. When removing them, they can create a sticker mark which is difficult to remove.

Also, there are necessary stickers. For example 'Parental Advisory', 'Special Edition' or 'Limited Edition Box Set', all of which much be construed as part of the original packaging. It will be interesting to see what feedback comes back once the transaction is complete. We shall have to see.

Cons To Selling To Music Magpie

  • Does Not Accept Single Track CD's, only albums
  • The scanning isn't as easy as it seems. You need to have your web cam focused and keep your item as still as possible.
  • You can’t sell multiple copies of the same title in the same trade
  • Some titles they simple 'don't like' and won't take.
  • Sometimes the system doesn't recognise a barcode until you re-enter it. Seems to be a glitch.
  • Expected to wait in for courier all day.

Music Magpie's Price Quotes

As can be seen, the prices quoted are very low with most of the items offered at 30p.

The almost expensive item being £2.99.

Decide for yourself if the range of offer prices here are reasonable and fair.

Also consider that Music Magpie has to recoup their costs.

Television advertising doesn't come cheap, so funding from this has to come from somewhere.

Not to worry, for the purpose of this article and the fact that much of this old shop stock would have ended up in landfill, there is lots to be learned and earned!

Processing Your Order Details

It is important that you sign up BEFORE you start entering barcodes. This is because you might lose the data after you have entered up. Furthermore, you need to be aware that you should periodically 'save' the data - just in case your computer cuts out. Also, be aware that you might automatically be timed out and signed out of your account.

I was lucky on all the above, as the data was still in tact on using the back button. You might be lucky too, but don't take it for granted that your data might still be there when you go back.

Preparing Your Items

This was labourious and time consuming. Armed with Mr Sheen, the stickers were difficult to remove, leaving a residue.

Gently, the glue needed another application of the spray and gently needed lifting off with the handle end of a teaspoon.

Remember point 6 in the terms and conditions? It was, therefore, important to keep literal and ensure that all items were free of stickers, cracks and anything else that Music Magpie could find as an excuse not to pay their quoted price.

Packing And Pick Up

This was very easy. Just use some old boxes and pack securely.

The address and order details can come via e-mail or snail mail where either a courier, organised by Music Magpie, or traditional post office dispatch. In our case, a courier has been organised.

The courier option allows you to pick the day of pick up.

However, there doesn't seem to be any time schedule so it looks like you have to wait in all day.

  • It might be better to consider using the tradition method of sending items via the postal system than use Music Magpie's couriers.

Courier

The following was copied from the e-mail as regards to the courier:

Left the front door open. Left the inner front door to porch open. Left the parcel in the porch. Even left a telephone number, just in case he or she was too stupid to see an open house! Guess what? They left a phrase on my note ‘have no phone’ on the open door of my open house. It was a delight to see that the courier took the time to let us know that he had no phone – if only he or she shouted out through the wide open doors – then I could have pointed to the parcel in the middle of my porch-way! Bless the dear courier. I wish him or her ease of their personal parcel pickups when they require a courier service.

Please will you re-organise the pick up at my home address that is convenient to me.

As you might correctly assume, I tried to contact music magpie via their recommendation - the telephone. It is a local rate number - 0870 495 1283 and operates from 9am to 5pm. It was unfortunate that I called them out of hours to discover this. This was discovered through a recorded voice message. I, therefore, had no alternative but to send them the above e-mail.

The next day a courier turned up to pick up items unexpected. This was followed by an e-mail response saying that a courier would turn up the following day to this. I replied saying that the parcel had already been picked up. Unfortunately the courier still arrived. He had wasted his time.

This might not be typical of couriers who are contracted to Music Magpie. However, it could put people off for sending more to this company. On balance, taking the option of sending items via the traditional Post Office methods, might be a better option and something that I would more likely consider should I do this again.

Correction

  • Glad to report that I have just received an e-mail stating receipt of items. This is two days after they have actually received the package, as stated in this article, but it is good to know musicMagpie do communicate, after all.

Music Magpie's Assessment Process

Seller's are notified in their user account of any activity.

This is processed under the order number. It seems that once they have received the package Music Magpie assesses each individual item.

They advise the user of this service that this takes 7 days to process.

It would have been wonderful if an e-mail was sent to the user advising this.

The cynical side of me can't help think that they are using this time to find an excuse to lower the initial value.

However, as this is an unbiased review, it is worth noting that this is a feeling, rather than fact.

Time will tell no lies.

Music Magpie's Cheque Offer

It has been about ten working days since the items were collected. I have received an e-mail asking me to cheque my account for the details of the cheque.

Stating that I should expect a cheque in the next 7 days, the total stated exactly to the original promise. All the items were accepted and there were no 'if's or but's' as a way of trying to reduce the value further.

I am actually pleasantly surprised. Evidence provided in the form of Music Magpie's cheque offer, seem to proove that they do exactly as they say on the tin.

Music Magpie Cheque Receipt

It has been three weeks since I started the process and I have now received my cheque. I am quite happy and grateful for the cash and I am pleased to say that Music Magpie have not made any barting reduction.

So, would I do it again? I just might. The next time, I will just send items that are worth more than the standardised 30p, as it will be worth my while. The lesser valued items, will probably go to car boot and sold for whatever I can get for them, but I will check the prices on musicMagpie's website to see how much they are prepared to give.

Music Magpie, Car Boot Sales, Amazon, Pawn Shops And E-bay - The Choice Is Yours!

Music Magpie seems a great place to send your pre-owned CD's, DVD's and gaming. Hard cash is something that is attractive to people, although this can be sought over the counter at places like Cash Converter. Operating like traditional pawn shops, items are assessed and a price is offered. You can either take it or leave it.

There are alternatives where you can sell directly. Car boot sales, or indirectly, Amazon and E-Bay, which generate cash for your CD's, DVD's and gaming but might take some time and effort to set up. Music Magpie, therefore, might be the better option for you. Of course, it is a matter of personal choice. With this review, you are now empowered.

Video games are worth a lot more. I sold 4 games for about $50 ranging from $10-15.

I was given a confirmed day for collection and they didn't turn up or even contact me to tell me why not or if they're going to try again!

That really isn't good enough, is it Chris? Hope you rang them and they made things right.

I did email and I eventually received a generic apology asking if I'd like to rearrange. After a couple more times of chasing to confirm my date I was told it would be yesterday. Unfortunately nobody turned up again! Useless!

Great write up, nice job on the research. Interesting in seeing what CDs are worth these days, lol!
