NBC's Community one of the Best Shows on TV in 2011
Great News! Community returns to finish out it's 3rd season on Thursday March 15, 2012 on NBC at 8 pm! The study group is back from hiatus!!!
As you may or may not know the cult favorite television show Community on NBC has been put on hiatus. NBC's decision to take this show and put it on the sidelines to promote less creative and more mass appealing shows isn't my favorite. Read more about the decision to Suspend Community from the spring semester here. The decision to suspend the Greendale high study group came as a surprise to many because the news of it's absence didn't come in it's own press conference or news article, nope the news of it's suspension came as fans looked frantically for the show on the spring 2012 lineup. Only when panic set in and fans demanded to know if Community was cancelled did NBC announce that due to low ratings it was putting the show on hiatus while it tried other options.
As NBC takes Community off air, hopefully only temporary, other institutions have been honoring the show all through November and December. Various organizations from Time magazine to The Guardian have named Community one of the best shows on Television in 2011. Once again a brilliant show is being shoved off screen because of low numbers, I just hope this doesn't end like the Arrested Development situation did! Arrested Development was another show that was critically acclaimed and had a cult following yet because it didn't receive the ratings the network wanted it was cancelled.
Below are some of the lists that Community has made in the last two months, proving that the show itself is genius, well at least really good!
Time Magazine Top Ten Shows of 2011
In the December 19, 2011 issue of Time Magazine, many articles focused on "2011's Best in Culture". This included best movies, books, music and more. When it came to the top ten television shows of 2011 Community ranked 8th! Author of the article James Poniewozik calls Community:
"television's first Cubist Sitcom. Like the still lifes of Picasso or Braque...yet, Community is not some high-art experiment but hilarious, good-time entertainment; it both defies sitcom formulas and lovingly embraces them"
Shows that also made the list include Louie (1), Parks and Recreation (2), Breaking Bad (3), Justified (4), Games of Thrones (5), Homeland (6), Friday Night Lights (7), The Good Life (9), and Enlightened (10).
Time Magazine Top 5 Episodes of 2011
Also in the December 19, 2011 issue of Time Magazine was the list of the top five television episodes of 2011. The number five episode on the list is one from Community! The Community episode "Remedial Chaos Theory" made the list of the top five television episodes of 2011! The episode aired in the fall of 2011 and was about a housewarming party for two members of the study group. What makes it one of the best episodes of the year was that the housewarming party is seen through seven different time-lines, one from each member of the group. I remember watching this episode when it first aired and it was brilliant, as well as entertaining!
The four other episodes that made the list include "Always" from Friday Night Lights, "Goodbye, Michael" from The Office, "Duckling" from Louie, and "Crawl Space" from Breaking Bad.
The Guardian Best Tv of 2011
Another article listed Community as one of the best shows on Television in 2011. The article was written by Sarah Hughes and released on The Guardian's website on Wednesday December 28th 2011. In this article she list Community as number 1! siting that "Its the little moments, the sly references to earlier episodes and other shows that makes it dearer to the heart". The list also includes Game of Thrones (2), Friday Night Lights (3), Breaking Bad (4), Homeland (5), Parks and Recreation (6), Justified (7), Revenge (8), Treme (9), Rescue Me (10).

The Daily Beast Best and Worst TV Show in 2011
One other mention of Community as a top show of 2011 was in The Daily Beast. In the article "Homeland, Justified, Downton Abbey & More: The Best and Worst TV Shows of 2011" written and published online on December 23, 2011 listed Community as one of the best shows of the year. The article written by Jace Lacob and Maria Elena Fernandez stated about the show
"Few comedies—certainly American ones—test the boundaries of the form more forcefully or with more intelligence and imagination than NBC’s Community, which once again dazzled with out-there absurdist wit. Whether it was an episode that tunneled into the imaginary construct of Dungeons & Dragons, paintball warfare, documentary filmmaking, My Dinner With Andre, or an exploration of chaos theory and alternate realities—expressed, naturally, by who went downstairs to grab delivery pizza—Community proved itself adept at juggling emotion, satire, and pop culture at large. (A Christmas episode that fused together a parody of Glee and original holiday music? Genius.) That Community manages to be hilarious, poignant, and revelatory—sometimes all at once—renders this cult comedy a true paragon of the format and all the more unforgettable."
A very nice review might I say and it beautifully describes the brillance of this show!
So much recognition for such a great show yet NBC still has put it on the shelf. It's obvious that it is all about getting viewers and not about quality television. Hopefully NBC will see their mistakes and allow Community to at least come back to finish their 3rd season! Let's hope Community and the Greendale study group returns soon!
Good News Community will be returning sometime in the spring of 2012! In an article i came across on the HUfffington Post website, it assures that the show will return but no news on a 4th season...
