Year of The Dog Trailer

Netflix's First Documentary

Netflix has produced it's own shows, and comedy specials and now it's branching out into the documentary market. Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to the the award winning documentary, The Square.

The Square is a documentary about the protest that occurred in Egypt's Tahrir Square. The Square is listed as a front runner to be an Oscar contender in next years documentary category.

The Square will be available on Netflix streaming on January 17th.

The Guilt Trip

In Guilt Trip, Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand are teamed up in a lighthearted comedy.

Seth Rogen, of Knocked Up and Pineapple Express fame is funniest when he is playing a slightly unlikeable slouch. Unfortunately in The Guilt Trip he is made to play the part of the well mannered straight man role.

While there are a few minor laughs, the talent of Rogen and Streisand is wasted on this light weight comedy.

The film seemed geared towards an older audience and will likely please Streisand fans more than it will the fans of Rogen's brand of crude humor which is missing from The Guilt Trip.

The film may have looked promising on paper with film executives planning on capturing both the younger generation and the baby boomers in the same theater. However it's a swing and a miss with both demographics as it satisfies neither.

Netflix Documentary: Mitt

Netflix is adding many new documentaries to it's line up and seems to be focusing much of it's efforts on creating new and interesting films for it's streaming library. For years two some of the most streamed material on Netflix has been documentaries and stand up comedy.

On January 24th Netflix will release the original documentary, Mitt. Mitt chronicles the Presidential campaign of Mitt Romney. Many considered Romney too stiff and out of touch with the common American to have a real chance of winning the highest office. In Mitt, we are shown a more down to earth version of the stiff candidate we saw in the media. The film, Mitt, suggests is Romney had shown more of his true self than he would have stood of much better chance of beating Obama in the last election.

Whether you are for or against Mitt Romney the film is an interesting and insightful man who did not present his best self to the world. Mitt will be available on Netflix streaming on January 24th.

Netflix Originals

One of the best reasons to subscribe to the Netflix streaming service is their line up of original shows such as Orange is the New Black and House of Cards.

Netflix has announced it is attempting to become the new HBO, meaning they intend to produce their own must see programming.

With House of Cards recently being nominated for several awards it would seem they are succeeding.

All episodes of House of Cards are currently available on Netflix streaming.

In addition to House of Cards, you can also watch Orange is the New Black from the same producer of the hit series, Weeds. Like Weeds, Orange is the new Black is a dark comedy about upper middle class woman who finds herself in a minimum security prison interacting with some interesting characters.

Liilyhammer and Hemlock Grove are also produced by Netflix as well as the final season of the fan favorite, Arrested Development.

Derek

One of the lesser known Netflix originals is the show Derek.

Derek stars Ricky Gervais as the employee of a small, low income retirement home in England.

Derek, although employed at the rest home is himself special needs and requires a certain amount of care from the other employees.

It is indicated during one episode that Derek suffers from Autism. While Derek is handicapped in many ways he is by far the best employee at the home due to his inherent kindness and the sympathy he has for the residents.

One of the more entertaining aspects of the show is Derek's fascination with childish you tube videos such as Baby Monkey.

Gervais is surround by his usual cast of characters in this funny and often touching Netflix original which is available to view on Netflix streaming.

Last Month's Poll

In last month's informal poll the viewers favorite Netflix original show was Orange is the New Black receiving 40% of the votes barely beating out House of Cards with 36% of the votes.

Based on the poll Lillyhammer and Derek are the least watched shows with 3% and 4% of the votes respectively.

Lillyhammer should pick up some more votes this month as season two will be available shortly on Netflix streaming. Be sure to go and watch season one now if you missed it. Lillyhammer was Netflix's first venture into self produced material and it's well worth watching and better than most shows currently on television.

Hemlock Grove received a respectable 18% of the votes.

Please take a second to vote in this month's poll.

You May Have Missed: Shameless

One of the better shows many have not seen is the BBC produced show, Shameless.

There was an American version of Shameless starring William H Macy, however the English version is far superior.

Shameless is about an alcoholic father of six children living in a working class neighborhood in England.

The show has won numerous awards including, Best Drama at the British Academy Television Awards.

There are 109 episodes of Shameless currently available to view on Netflix streaming.

If You Liked BBC's Call The Midwife:

Then check out, The Bletchley Circle which tells the tale of four woman of ordinary means that learned code breaking skills in World War II.

Now that the war is over these four use their code breaking skills and espionage talents to catch killers. Season one of The Bletchley Circle contains three episodes available now on Netflix streaming. Season two of the series is set to start in April 2014 on Masterpiece Theater.

Some of the better shows available on Netflix streaming, like The Bletchley Circle are produced by the BBC.

Some of these shows include, Call the Midwife, Dowton Abbey, Sherlock, Shameless, Derek and Luther.

High Anxiety

One of Mel Brooks better films, High Anxiety is available to stream this month.

High Anxiety, like Brooks' other films, Young Frankenstein, Space Balls and Blazing Saddles are comedic satires.

High Anxiety is Brooks' take on Alfred Hitchcock's work. The film is a parody mostly based on Hitchcock's Vertigo.

Hitchcock actually enjoyed the parody of his work and reportedly send Brooks a case of valuable wine to show his appreciation.

High Anxiety was released in 1977 and to this day still enjoys a rather high rating of 75% approval on the site, Rotten Tomatoes.
