New Songs for the Holidays by Kathleen Holyoak

Meet Kathleen Holyoak

Kathleen Holyoak is one of my best friends and is one of the top five best musician/composers I know. And if that's not enough, we discovered that we are related to each other! I love Kathleen's music enough that I want introduce it to everyone. So let me introduce you to her and her music.

Kathleen is an award winning composer/arranger, organist and pianist who resides in Arizona with her husband, Garth W. Holyoak. They have four daughters and nine grandchildren. Kathleen's daughters are all powerhouses of talent and capability themselves.

She began performing at age five, and at the age of nine was appointed organist at her church, a position she held for nine years. She has taught professionally for more than 35 years. In 1987, the Holyoak family was awarded "America's Musical Family of the Year" by the American Music Conference.

Kathleen has published numerous songbooks and CDs for children and adults. Her music has been performed around the globe, including Christmas music at the White House for former President and Mrs. Bush as well as the private residence of former Vice President and Mrs. Cheney.

She has traveled abroad to perform and speak as an instructor, inspirational speaker and performer for seminars, conferences and church functions. In 2009 she was invited to arrange and orchestrate several pieces of music for choir and orchestra for the dedication of a new church building in Kiev, Ukraine. As a result of this invitation she also decided to learn how to play the Bandura, a type of Ukrainian harp, so that she could play in the orchestra! And here is the photo to prove it!

Kathleen is unstoppable, regardless of any set back or obstacle she may encounter. Two years ago she had an untimely accident in which she fractured her arm in several pieces, and while she's had to allow time for healing, she continues to perform and compose. And she does so with joy and enthusiasm, despite some uncertainty of the bone completely healing and some discomfort. It's as if she shouts out at her set backs and obstacles, "I DARE you!!"

A Children's Book "Flowers in Heaven"

Kathleen and friend, Sherry Summers collaborated on a children's book as well. Here is part of the description:

Flowers in Heaven is an adventure that takes two sisters and their pet tortoise to faraway places in an exciting dream. They magically find themselves in heaven with their late and dearly missed Grandma Clea. Grandma teaches that when people pass away they're still close by as their lives are forever interwoven through the bonds of love. The little girls also learn the valuable lesson that doing good deeds on earth is like planting flowers in heaven.

Grandma Clea's motto through life was, "plant more flowers."

This Is the Picture Kathleen Sent for Me to Use. . .

I have several other pictures of her which she has "doctored" as well. And as you can tell, she has quite a sense of humor! I think that's a great tribute to how she looks at life, continues to enjoy being a wife, mother, grandmother, musician/composer, and so much more. She carries with her an ease, grace, elegance and charm. I hope you have enjoyed getting to know my friend and cousin and her music as much as I cherish having her in my life.

I enjoyed reading about your cousin. Thanks, Dan, for introducing her and she sounds like she doesn't take herself too seriously which is quite refreshing for a composer, if I do say so.

I really enjoyed this but laughed out loud when I saw the photo with the mustache! Come on, Dan, are you SURE Kathleen sent this to you? (I cannot imagine!)

Thanks for stopping by Colorado and Hazel. Oh yes, I'm positive she sent it. I didn't need to add to her antics at all. She is quite capable of doing it herself. LOL

This is an awesome tribute to your friend and cousin, Dan. I have been listening to her music now for a number of years (yours too) and the work that both of you do has brought much joy into my life. You are both blessed with The Gift. This article is priceless. I so enjoyed it.

I've been listening to Kathleen's music for years and in fact, we sang her song "misty pooch" in the kitchen this morning! She is a very talented composer and an even greater person.

I have had the privilege of being Kathleen's friend for over 30 years and she is definitely one of the most talented people I have ever known. Not only is she incredibly gifted and dedicated to her music, she is one of the most ethical, moral, and hard working individuals I've ever met. This lady has it all--including being genuinely nice and kind to everyone.

Thank you for sharing the information regarding the prestigous gifts and achievements of my very talented friend, Kathy Holyoak. Kathy is probably most notably known for her outstanding musical talents and being the humble person she is, her other talents are not as well known. Unfortunately, many of us who know Kathy personally...well, sometimes we tend to take her talents for granted and fail to give praise and credit where, and when, it's due. I'm very grateful you have chosen to highlight Kathy and her many deserving talents. She is a wonderful person who is always willing to go out of her way to both help and share her gifts with others. I'm proud and blessed to have Kathy as a long time friend.

I had chills as I listened to Kathleen's marvelous music you posted. She and I go back to my earliest memories! Thank you for helping get her name out there. Her gift is a God-given talent. What a fun coincidence that you are cousins!

I was lucky enough to have Kathy as my choir director while attending Suomi College. Kathy was not only a great teacher (she had to be, I don't read music) but was and I hope still is a dear friend. Kathy and Garth were great people to be around. I work at Wheaton College radio (88.1 on your dial, the 500 watt blow torch), and we feature several of Kathy's songs.

She has given her life to the glory of our heavenly Father with her voice and music. I feel blessed to know her and her wonderful family
