New Year's Day Movie List 2012

If you are undecided which movies to watch on New Year's day, this simple guide might help you out. The movies showing in theaters on January 1 will be movies that opened during the last two weeks or so of December 2010. If you are to take a look at any movie listing or guide, there won't be new movies premiering on January 1.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

  • Directed by Guy Ritchie, this is a sequel to 2009's 'Sherlock Holmes'.
  • Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will return, reprising their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively. Jared Harris will play Professor Moriarty.
  • The film also stars Noomi Rapace, Stephen Fry, Kelly Reilly, Rachel McAdams, and Geraldine James.
  • Opens on December 16.


Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

  • The fourth film in the 'Mission: Impossible' movie series. Tom Cruise returns as IMF agent Ethan Hunt.
  • It's directed by Brad Bird and produced by J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. If you can recall, Abrams directed the third film in the series.
  • The cast includes Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, and Josh Holloway.
  • Opens on December 16 (IMAX theaters) and December 21 (general release).


Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

  • This is the third installment in the 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' movie series. It's a sequel to 2007's 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' and 2009's 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: TheSqueakquel'.
  • Directed by Mike Mitchell, the film stars Jason Lee and David Cross.
  • The three Chipmunks are played by Justin Long as Alvin, Matthew Gray Gubler as Simon and Jesse McCartney as Theodore.
  • Opens on December 16.


The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

  • This is a film based on a Swedish novel by Stieg Larsson. This is the second movie adaptation of the novel since a Swedish-language adaptation was made in 2009.
  • Directed by David Fincher and written by Steven Zaillian, this movie stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara who play Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander respectively.
  • The cast includes Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Steven Berkoff, Joely Richardson, and Yorick van Wageningen.
  • Basically, the film is about the quest of a man to find a girl who has been missing for forty years.
  • Opens on December 21.


The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

  • This is a performance capture 3D movie based on a series of comic books by Georges Prosper Remi, a Belgian artist known for his pen name Herge.
  • Produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie will be based on three of Herge's original comic books. These are 'The Secret of the Unicorn', 'The Crab with the Golden Claws', and 'Red Rackham's Treasure'.
  • The film's cast includes Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Daniel Craig, Tony Curran, Toby Jones and Gad Elmaleh.
  • The main character Tintin is played by Jamie Bell.
  • Opens in theaters on December 21 in IMAX and Digital 3D.
