"Oh, Captain, My Captain!" "What Will Your Verse Be?" - a Poem in Honor and Memory of Robin Williams

Oh Captain! My Captain! What Will Your Verse Be?

Oh Captain! My Captain! What will your verse be?

Will you hide your pain or make a choice

To drop the fear and find your voice?

And share the real that's in you--

Laughter and even darkness..

Will you awake out of your stupor?

Awakenings in us never thought

Brought to life by one who fought

Even if only for a glimpse of time

and back to comatose.

Will you make a difference?

The doctor with the Bozo nose

Infectious laughter. None else came close.

Patch Adams with the healing heart,

making life bearable.

Will you dream? And achieve?

What dreams may come when we allow

perhaps not knowing why or how

Believing the magic is out there

finding our own dear Ann..

Unmatchable, unbeatable, except by his own hand

We loved him, the comic, the dreamer, the man

Who spent all his verse

With much more to say..

What will your verse be?

Dead Poets' Society & its Great Quotes: "Oh, Captain, my Captain!" "What Will Your Verse Be?"

Oh, Captain, my Captain, stand on a chair!

Let the whole world know that you’re there.

No hiding your soul allowed.

Take the dare!

Live

Awaken

Heal

Believe

Stand

Very well done and a great tribute to Robin Williams. He gave a lot to everyone, with laughter and deep meaning about life. It's sad that he hid his depression and didn't let anyone help him when it mattered the most. He will be very much missed.

This is a lovely tribute to this talented actor. Sad that he took his life. Seems he hid his true self well behind his humor. If only he had let us in to help.

His death hurt me like losing a brother. I followed him since he first appeared on Happy Days in the 70's. When someone has been part of your life for nearly 40 years you have faith that they will be there. Thank you for such a beautiful tribute. May we all stand on our chairs and shout; Oh captain, my captain.

This was a beautiful tribute to a troubled and lovely soul, I have been so saddened by his passing. I understand his not wanting to share that he had this incurable illness, but I sure wish his story had ended differently. He deserved a better send off than dying like he did. Thank you for your inspiring words.

Victoria:

How can you forget a funny man like Robin Williams - right? He is one person and talented actor that I will sorely miss, as well as a lot of others out there.

What an awesome poem to help keep a Robin Williams in all of our memories. Who would ever imagine a man like that who made everyone laugh.

Through movies like Mrs. Doubt fire, and Popeye. And touched all of our hearts with movies like Patch Adams and The Dead Poets Society. Thanks for sharing your beautiful poem with all of us! (;

Jim, I miss Robin Williams a lot. Always will. I loved his humor, but also his serious side. There's another great one called What Dreams May Come. (I think that's the title.) It's beautiful, both in the story and the visual effects.

Thanks for reading!

Victoria:

Yes you are quite right, Robin Williams also had a serious side besides the humorous one. I will look into that other movie you mentioned here. I had never heard of it. Could be that it's older and could also be on Netflix possibly. Glad I stopped in to read this article as well.

I was sent here by Faith Reaper! So, it is nice to meet you. :-)

I really enjoyed the flow of how you have written this poem.

You mentioned so many of his movies, Patch Adams, "Where ever dreams may come.", which is ironic because of how and the way he did leave us. I loved Mrs. Doubtfire! Another one of his I really enjoyed so much was his movie with Billy Crystal which I am drawing a "blank" right now.

I do agree what a sad loss it is for someone who made so many feel good and to not have the chance to feel that good inside for himself.

Shared and Up ++++ Really enjoyed your beautiful expression!

I'm glad you came here, Jo! Bless Faith Reaper. Nice to meet you, too. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. It is really odd for sure how he died when we compare it to "Where Dreams May Come." I'll have to look up that movie with Billy Crystal.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Hi Thelma. It still is so sad. I watched a movie of his last weekend that he made last year: The Angriest Man in (I forget the name of the town). It was an okay movie, but what was sad was that it was about a dying man. He even told them what to put on his tombstone, and the years 1951-2014, which are the years he actually lived. Sad.

annart profile image

Just to add to this, I have just seen a documentary by the pathologist in the case of his death. He seems to think that Robin Williams might have had a brain condition (which he didn't know about) that messes up your reasoning etc., a much more dangerous condition than Parkinson's. It seems the study of the brain showed that possibility, one that would suggest his suicide was not necessarily a logically thought-out action.

You might have seen the same programme.

So sad for his family. Poor man. At least he will be remembered for all the right reasons; his humour, gentleness and huge talent.

Ann

I love this Victoria. your poem is great and I like how you took the name from Dead Poet's Society, "Oh Captain, My Captain". Robin Williams was an incredible actor, not just in his comedy roles but his dramatic roles in particular. Dead Poets Society ranks up there as one of my all time favorites. I could just so identify with the characters - especially Robin Williams.
