Orange is the New Everything!
What's Your Color?
It is said that color has an emotional effect on
people. Some say it makes a difference what color you choose for
your bedroom. Color can describe a feeling, but further research says color
can also provoke a certain feeling. Red can remind you of love
and Christmas, your favorite scary movie or a super
bloody action flick. Black can be used to describe something dark and evil,
or it can be used to slim someone who wants to look a few
pounds lighter. I am a yellow person, but orange is starting to grow on me!
The Soon Award-Winning Cast
Helping Piper bring her story to the masses is the same creator of SHOWTIME's Golden Globe winning series "Weeds." Jenji Kohan is not only the co-creater of Orange but also writes and produces for the series. Together, and with the help of many others, Piper and Jenji have put together a cast that is undeniably talented and the chemistry between the actors are electric. These actors are faces we've all seen somewhere before but the most familiar faces in this new series are Jason Biggs and Laura Prepon.
Orange is the New Black
Netflix's new hit series, "Orange is the New Black," is causing a huge stir across social networks and making for some interesting conversations at the table. If you've asked "What's this new show I keep hearing about?", then this article is written specifically with you in mind. "Orange is the New Black" is based off the book and real life story of a woman's 15 month sentence in a federal prison. In her young, wild and free days, Piper Chapman falls in love with a very attractive and confident drug dealer. This love affair leads Piper to help her beloved sweetheart when the drug business takes a turn for the worse; and that "help" landed Piper in a woman's federal correction facility 10 years later. This show takes you into the mind and experience of not just a woman with no faith, who describes in detail a time in her life as a "lost soul, post college, adventure" phase but also into the minds and hearts of the ladies which share Piper's experience. Oh, did I mention that the drug dealer is a woman who ends up in the same correctional facility?
Alex Vause
Jason Biggs is most known for his role as Jim Levenstein in the popular "American Pie" movie series. This time around, Jason is playing the role of Larry Bloom, Piper's sweet yet under-achieving fiance'. Laura Prepon is best known for her role in "That 70s Show" as Donna Pinciotti. Laura plays the hell out of Piper's ex lover and drug dealer Alex Vause. For some, the biggest change its not seeing Prepon play a lesbian role but seeing her with darker hair! The lead role of Piper Chapman goes to Taylor Schilling whom you may recognize kissing handsome Zac Efron in "The Lucky One" or for her role in Academy Award winning "Argo." These three main characters are not only engaging and entertaining but most of all they are relatable; and it doesn't just stop with the main characters. The meat and depth of the show comes from the personalities, perspectives and experiences of the other inmates.
Why Do They Call Me "Crazy-Eyes?"
The character "Crazy-Eyes" is already a fan favorite! Suzanne "Crazy-Eyes" Warren is played by actress Uzo Aduba, and I hope she doesn't take this the wrong way, but it seems as this character was made especially for her. Sue (Suzie, Suzanne, Crazy-Eyes, whatever you want to call her) is a diverse character. She is an African-American woman, raised by white parents who seems to have mental issues. The season doesn't dive into exactly why she is in prison but it does give you enough information to have you tuning in for season two!
Tiffany Doggett
DogGoneIt, Doggett!
You remember Taryn Manning from "Hustle and Flow" and "8 mile" with Eminem, but you will now know her as Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett, the inmate who is determined to introduce her fellow inmates to Jesus. Radical is an understatement when it comes to Doggett. She is a drug-addict who finds Jesus and lets it be known that He is all she has and is all everyone else needs. The season comes to an end showing just how radical for Christ she really is!
There are so many more characters and stories to love! Let's let actress Natasha Lyonne give you her personal take on the show:
What are you waiting for??
If you haven't taken the time to check out this new hit series yet, what are you waiting for? Grab the popcorn and sit in your most comfortable chair because you will not be moving for a quite a while. This show is captivating and it keeps you wanting more. If you already have too many addictions then give one up to and let Orange take its place. It shines light on a reality that most people never see or even try to understand. It emphasizes on the fact that every decision is a building block in one's life and the show proves that one's life is not as different from another's as most people think.
