New Sound

Owl City sheds most of his signature synth sound on Shooting Star and The Midsummer Station to cater to more dance and pop music influences. This was the first time he collaborated with others, such as producers Stargate and Josh Crosby, Emily Wright , and Nate Campany.

Adam Young explained, “I made my first two records on my own without any outside help and learned that it’s easy to overthink what you do by allowing yourself to become too emotionally invested in what you’re doing." Young continues, “Initially, l was anxious about letting other people the solo endeavor l’d always played close to the chest, but it was exhilarating not having 100 percent control over what happened. In the end for me, it’s all about trying new things as an artist.” (Idolator)

f: Thanks! Yes, I must admit that I am quite invested. I've been listening to his music faithfully since 2008 and I haven't been able to find any reason why I should stop. :)

Go for it! (Did you meet Adam yet?) Maybe you even like the same sort of music as your students that you tutor.

f: I saw him live once in 2010, but I haven't met him. I would like to, but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe so; I haven't asked them what kind of music they like before, but maybe I will do so when I start tutoring again in the fall.

It does sound a little more mainstream than his older material, but I still love it and if it helps him become even more recognised internationally then that's just great :)

Jamie: Thanks for your comment! I love your positive approach to his new sound. I was hesistant at first, but now I realize that I love it. My favorite songs on the EP are 'Shooting Star' and 'Gold'. Thanks again for sharing!

Wow, Gold is just a masterpiece. Just like any other Owl City record, I can safely say there isn't one song I don't like. But Gold is a highlight for sure!

Jamie: I love 'Gold'! I don't love 'Take it All Away', but I do like it. I love the other 3 songs on the EP. :)

Nice :)

Oh and by the way, just a little fun fact for you. Right at this very moment, the EP is at number 11 in the iTunes chart here in the UK! I'm hoping by the end of the week it'll reach the top 10 for the official album chart :D

Jamie: Awesome! I don't know a lot about iTunes, but it definitely looks like the EP is number 8 for top albums in the U.S.

Wow!

It really looks like this is a step in the right direction in terms of popularity. His last album only hit around number 57 here in the UK :(

But I hope this album dominates the charts in many countries :)

Yes, I've heard that 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' didn't do so well. I also hope this EP and his upcoming album are successful.

Agreed! :)
