People Giving Their Children Strange Names

Strange Names

I'm sure by now that most people of heard of the parents from China who wanted to name their baby @ or that poor little girl from New Zealand who's parents decided to call her Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. Luckily for her she gets a chance to have a normal life with a nice normal name because the judge in her custody case has since made her a ward of the state so that her name could be changed. Unfortunately most people will have to live with their odd names at least until they are old enough to have it changed.

I just read a new study that says children with strange names do better in life. It probably depends on the name but I doubt that Talula Does The Hula would agree.

I saw the story on Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii! I can't believe any sane person would name their child something like that. Luckily for her, the judge couldn't either.

I knew some of the stars children's names, but not the others. My goodness, what were they thinking.

Thanks for the enlightenment,

Very interesting! Non Christian Chinese used to call their children "kow (dog), Choong (germ) and all sorts of other animals so that evil spirits will not know that they are children and kill them. Those people are superstitious. Rather entertaining, I think!

I agree with many of the insights you have made here. Parents may feel they are being creative by giving their children an offbeat name, but as a result I have seen many youths and adults go by self chosen nicknames :).

My daughter has a somewhat offbeat name, (Willow,) and I'm hoping when she's grown she won't turn around and ask me, "Mom, what were you thinking?!?" I just loved the name so much.

SweetiePie profile image

I like the name Willow actually. I was thinking more like Apple, Orange, or when people name their children after countries and rivers :).

Karen N profile image

Karen N 8 years ago from United States Author

I like Willow myself, and my sister named her son Lake. I thought that it was a little strange at the time but it turns out that it's actually an old family name. The ones that really bother me are the weird ones like Moxie Crimefighter.

Well fellow hubbers, if you live or visit in South Africa, you are going to come across some really odd names, especially amongst the previously disadvantaged residents of our fair shores.

Wiseman, Knowledge, Wisdom, Clever, are amongst the more common ones. Then there is also, Knowledge, Intelligent, Happiness, Wellbeing, Doctor, Professor, the list is quite endless, and these are not nicknames, they are the names that they are registered with in their ID books.

Karen N profile image

Karen N 8 years ago from United States Author

It sounds like they are being named for qualities that they would like their children to possess.

glassvisage profile image

glassvisage 8 years ago from Northern California

Those qualities make nice names... but Rumer? Pilot Inspektor? Dweezil? Ugh! And people look up to celebrities!

Nicole Winter profile image

Nicole Winter 8 years ago from Chicago, IL

I don't know why, but I have always really liked the name Dweezil. Don't get me wrong, I never would impart that name on to a living human being, but... it's kind of cool. (For a cat, or dog.)

I have a client who name her child Your Highness Queen Neffertiti this is her first name...

Karen N profile image

Karen N 6 years ago from United States Author

I doubt that Sparrow will thank his parents for that when he's older!

I don't think that Zephyr is all that bad, just a little unusual.

Dick Gay, is a little unfortunate.

You do have to feel a little sorry for Queen Neffertiti.

I think that it would be better to save the really odd names for your pets and spare the children.

Wow these names have serious problems I have always thought about naming my child Lane. Is that weird because I want him to have a normal life?

This child should be taken away from the parents so she has the chance to be raised by someone normal.

is quite common name in Europe (in some countries).

I suppose it has some deeper roots in history, since it sounds like deprived from medieval era or Ancient era names.

I like Sparrow actually. My friend wants to name her son Cologne Freedom Jones. Her husband is disagreeing.

Laura 6 years ago

Ive always liked the name "chance"

Karen N profile image

Cologne Freedom Jones!

I'm hoping that her husband keeps disagreeing.

Sparrow would probably be a better name for a girl than for a boy.

The main character in the tv show Human Target is Christopher Chance. So I imagine that we might see a few little boys with that name.

true (this was actually quite popualr in the victorian era)

brooklyn (even if it is more of a boys name)

fuschia (flower names are popualar)

coco (nickname for chloe)

sage (spice names are popualar)

Arvada 6 years ago

When I was pregnant with twins, one of the names my husband and I picked was Caesar, but our parents begged us to change it. When he was born, we named him Benjamin, but then I was holding him and I started crying. When my husband asked what was wrong I said, "He looks like a Caesar to me!" So we changed it back. Now that they're used to it, our parents like it.

We live in the uk and me and my husband have choosen unusual names for or kids...Harrington James 17,Adam Thomas 13, Casper Mason 8, And our 2 year old twins Nathaniel Ruben and Savannah May. We had 2 premature babies who died 2&4 days after birth 15 years ago, Jesse and Jenson... Do you think our kids have weird middle names? Ethan and Maya Scavo. And no it's not made up and scavo IS our surname and not from desperate housewives!

Karen N profile image

Karen N 5 years ago from United States Author

I really don't think that Ethan and Maya are weird names. It's getting more and more common for people to give their children more unique names. Unfortunately they sometimes cross the line and end up giving them names that are strange instead of unique.

India Tang 5 years ago

I read the comment about the guy named Sparrow Tang who played football, well that guy is my husband, his name is not weird, it's a wonderful name, as for different names, my name is very different, and so we named our daughter a very unusual name-people need to stop being so closed minded, life would be boring if everyone was named Bob!

Karen N profile image

Karen N 5 years ago from United States Author

I'm sorry that you are offended, this article was written to entertain not to offend. As time goes by many of these names will become a lot less strange to people as they become more common.

Step son is 15 is Asa (named after my husbands father who passed away the night before Asa Jrs birth) and our children together Percy 11, 8 year old Tyrone, 5 year old Rowan and 2 year old evie. We are also guardians to Elliot 17, Eric 15, Craig 11 and Parker 10. I wanted to name my son Rocket but I was worried about the stigma with "strange" names, so we named him Logan Rocket but we call him Rocket all the time, and he is the smartest baby I have had yet!! Rocket scientist I am hoping :D I love different names and wish mine was really Lotus, I have adopted this nickname though.
