Premium Rush

David Koepp is one of the most successful Hollywood screenwriters of all time, having worked on Jurassic Park, Spider-Man and War of the Worlds to name a few. Although he is very successful as a writer he has never really made an impact as a director although his 1999 horror movie Stir of Echoes is criminally underrated. So I was surprised when I heard about his newest film, Premium Rush a movie about a bicycle messenger in Ney York City.

The movie follows Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) a bicycle messenger who delivers packages from one place to another. Trouble starts when he picks up a package and is immediately confronted by an NYPD officer, Bobby Monday (Michael Shannon) who wants the package. With the help of a few other messengers including his girlfriend Vanessa (Dania Ramirez) Wilee has to find some way to get Monday off his tail and deliver the package on time.

So how interesting can a movie about a bicycle messenger be? A lot apparently as I really enjoyed the movie. It kept me entertained and managed to weave an interesting story and characters that you can care about. The story is not as straight forward as you think and does a good job at getting your attention. The stand outs have to be Gordon-Levitt and Shannon as they put on great performances. I was really glad to see Shannon in this movie and see what he could do with the character as I am a big fan of his. Koepp gets props for making this a non-liner movie as it adds a lot more suspense to the plot. He also does a nice job of not dragging the story along and making it shift as it goes along.

There’s not much bad I can say about the movie it was a lot more than I expected so I can’t really complain about anything. I think that Shannon should have had more screen time as his character felt kind of flat but that has more to do with me than anything else.

Premium Rush is a surprisingly original and fun film that will have you glued to the screen. It’s a nice little film that has great performances and a nice plot. Overall I recommend this to anyone who likes a decent thriller or someone who likes to watch fun and innovative movies, 3 ½ out of 5.
